1. (a) Write a note on Mohr’s circle of stresses. What is the importance of this circle?
(b) A rectangular block of 1200 mm2 cross-sectional area is subjected to a longitudinal compressive load of
1200kN. Determine the normal stress across the cross section of the block. If the block is cut by an oblique
plane making an angle of 400 with normal section of the block. Determine:
(i) Normal stress on the oblique plane (ii) Tangential stress along the oblique plane, and (iii) Resultant
stress on the oblique plane.
2. (a) Derive the basic torsional equation TJ = fRs = Cθ
L
(b) Design a close coiled helical spring made of by steel wire. The diameter of the coil is 10 times the diameter
of the wire. A load 650N is applied on the spring which causes a deflection of 60mm. Take allowable
maximum shear stress is 80N/mm2 and C=8X104 N/mm2 .
3. (a) Derive the Rankine’s formula for crippling load.

(b) A column of circular section has 160mm diameter and 4m length. Both ends of the column are fixed. The
column carries a load of 150kN at an eccentricity of 15mm from the geometrical axis of the column. Find
L
the maximum compressive stress on the column section.
4. A 2.8m long steel tube having 80mm outer diameter and 60mm inner diameter issued as a strut with both ends
O R
hinged. The load is parallel to the axis of the street but is eccentric. Find the maximum value of the eccentricity
so that crippling load on strut is equal to 60 percent of the elur’s crippling load. Take yield strength = 320
5. (a) What do you mean by eccentricity of loading? What are its effects on a column section?
(b) A hollow rectangular column is 120cm deep, 80cm wide and 15cm thick. An eccentric load of 200kN acts
U W
on the centroidal axis bisecting 120cm long side, the eccentricity being 10cm. Determine the maximum and
T
(b) Locate the shear centre of the section shown in Fig 1. Thickness is 6mm throughout.

7. Find the deflection at the free end of a quarter of a circular cantilever beam, if it is loaded by ‘P’ at mid span,
P acting vertically down ward. Radius of the circle is R.
8. Calculate the magnitude and nature of the forces in the member of the truss as shown is fig 2, by method of
joints.
