BACKGROUND OF THE MAHILA KALYAN PARISHAD

The seeds of initiating to form a voluntary organization at Reckong Peo in


district Kinnaur had been sown in year 1988 by few-committed group of women
& it was registered in 1989 under the society’s registration Act 1860 article 21.
The organization is rooted the philosophy that the development of the Nation take
place when the people especially women in the rural areas are mobilized to
participate in their own development. The resolution state that it would include
the groups & individuals irrespective of cast, creed or race engaged in holistic
development of the Tribal community especially women & children.

Mahila Kalyan Parishad is caring out programmes covering all of these facets:

• Women empowerment.
• Environment Protection and livelihood Sustainability.
• Literacy- Non- formal education.
• Health-Especially reproductive & Child Health (RCH) & HIV/AIDS control
project,.
• To promote & encourage rich cultural practices & community harmony.
• To promote appropriate rural technology especially in tribal Areas.
• To promote low cost home remedies & traditional system of medicines in the
rural areas.
• Initiate income generation activities for women by providing them vocational
training.

Major Programmes Detail

AIDS CONTROL PROJECT (TARGET INTERVATION PROJECT)

YEAR 2001 TO 2010.

PROJECTS AREA:
* Geographical Coverage: - (J.P. industries & Kashang Hydro Power
Project, GREF)

The Project has been implementing in J.P. industries & Kashang


Hydropower Project, GREF at Powari of distt. Kinnaur (H.P.) which is situatated
on bank of baspa & Saltuj river on National Highway –22 from Shimla to Kaza .
The project area is 40Kms & 7 Kms from Distt. Headquarter. 20,000 workers
have been working in these project sites from Himachal Pradesh like Nepal,U.A.,
Bihar.U.P., M.P. & Rajasthan.etc.

Kashang Hydropower Project (near Purwani jula)


GREF (at Powari)

Profile of target population

The target population is migrant workers (Both Females/Males) & the


secondary stakeholders are staff personnel, management of the industries, dhaba
owners / workers.pan/bidi shops & wine shop workers etc.

Goals

Prevention & check on transmission of STD/HIV/AIDS among migrant


workers of J.P. Industries, Kashang Hydropower Project & GREF at
Powari.

Gist of the activities and achievements of the Project

Objectives of the RCH Programme:

a) To increase the rate of family planning methods especially


spacing methods in the un-served villages.
b) To make people aware about the proper utilization of available
health facilities and disseminate new developments
c) To reduce the prevalence of RTI from 23% to 5% by organizing
Health treatment camps
d) Increase the full antenatal care coverage of pregnant women
from 20% to100%.
e) Increase institutional deliveries from 24%to100%
f) To achieve 100%immunization coverage for 0-12 months old
children
g) Promote RTI/STI reduction programme through adolescent and
eligible couples counseling and treatment and awareness
campaigning.

Programme for Environment Protection and Carbon Neutrality in
Himachal Pradesh
(CLAP- for Himachal)

Mahila Kalyan Parishad has recognized the need for action against climate change in
district in wake of heavy industrial growth and considering fragility of ecosystem in
Himalayan range extended hand with Department of Environment, Science and
Technoloy, Govt. of Himachal Pradesh in association with Development Alternatives a
Delhi based ngo and started the Programme in district Kinnaur with focus on the Nichar
Block

Name of Project Area: Nichar Block

Project Period: June 2010 - 2011

Objectives:
1. Reducing Energy Consumption
2. Promoting Renewable Power
3. Taking Action through PRIs, Distt. Administration, Mahila Mandala and School
Clubs.

Action Taken:

1. Community Interface and baseline explained in 2 Panchayats


2. Assessment through sample water testing from main sources in 2 Panchayats
and community meetings
3. Identification and selection of secondary stakeholders in the area
4. Follow up testing and reporting
5. Action planning and co-ordination with different departments of government

Other Regular Activities

1. Insuring women groups and individuals: Under micro-insurance many women

groups and individuals has been insured and organization has been working hard

to bring them to financial inclusion.

2. Events and Celebration : Organization has always been proactive in celebrating

events concerned to women and health and livelihood and through this it has sent

across message of a positive change in society

3. Right based issues and concerned discussions has been one of the main activities

that organization conducts time to time to draw attention of policy makers and

government
