Abstract: The purpose of this article is to analyze the theme of dystopia in the novel Ape
and Essence, by Aldous Huxley. Known throughout the world due to narratives as Brave
New World and The Doors of Perception, Huxley creates a pessimist future from the
conception that the progress and the nationalism are two fundamental forces that lead
humanity to destruction. The world created by his critic imagination imagines a future in
which a few survivors live under the wreckage of Western civilization. A group from New
Zealand, spared by the nuclear destruction, discover the existence of dictators and mutants.
And what it would be the journey of rediscovering of the Western hemisphere becomes a
sagacious critic on the constant danger of those who lived under the menace of the Cold
War.
Keywords: Utopia, dystopia, progress, nationalism, destruction.

forçoso depender dos cemitérios daqueles que um dia gozaram tais
vantagens” (HUXLEY, 1984, p. 70).
