Credits and Workload Expectations

For undergraduate courses, one credit is defined as equivalent to an average of three hours of learning effort
per week (over a full semester) necessary for an average student to achieve an average grade in the course. For
example, a student taking a four credit course that meets for five hours a week, should expect to spend an
additional seven hours a week on coursework outside the classroom.

Text (required): Crowe, Elger, and Roberson, Engineering Fluid Mechanics, 9th ed, 2008 (John Wiley & Sons,
New York). You may alternatively find the 8th ed acceptable, or there is an electronic version available from the
publisher as well.
Lab Manual (required): CE 3502 Fluid Mechanics Lab Manual Fall 2008 – Available at UMN Book Store.
Grading
Homework: 6 problem sets will be graded. Assignments are due in your lab section drop box on the dates
noted on page 5 by 5:30 pm This is typically on a Thursday, except for assignment 5, which is
due on a Wednesday. No credit for late homework. Solutions will be on the web after due date.
Laboratories: Nine lab sessions will be conducted in 277 CivE. Most will begin with a brief quiz based on
lecture material. Lab reports are due in your lab section drop box one week after each lab by 5:30
pm. Laboratory attendance is required; i.e., without attending every lab, you will not pass the
class. Your TA will take attendance and inform Prof. Hill of absences / tardiness. If you have a very
good reason to miss or be late for a lab, contact Prof. Hill AND your TA before you miss it. At the
latest (e.g., in the case of sudden illness) contact Prof. Hill and the TA within 24 hours of your
laboratory. Otherwise, it may not be possible to make up the laboratory.
Mid-term Tests: There will be two mid-term tests. Oct 14 and Nov 18
Final Exam: 10:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. Tuesday, December 21 STSS 230. Comprehensive
Final grades are given on an A – F basis with following weighting:
Final Exam 31%
Mid-term Tests 34% (2x17%)
Lab Grade 25% (Laboratory grade = 0.95 x Lab write-up grade + 0.05 Lab quiz grade.)
Homework 10%
Total 100%

University Grading Standards will be followed in assigning grades for this course
A achievement that is outstanding relative to the level necessary to meet course requirements.
B achievement that is significantly above the level necessary to meet course requirements.
C achievement that meets the course requirements in every respect.
D achievement that is worthy of credit even though it fails to meet fully the course requirements.
F represents failure (or no credit) and signifies that the work was either
(1) completed but at a level of achievement that is not worthy of credit or
(2) was not completed and there was no agreement between the instructor and the student that the
student would be awarded an I.
I (Incomplete) Assigned at the discretion of the instructor when, due to extraordinary circumstances, a
student is prevented from completing the work of the course on time; this requires a written agreement
between instructor and student.
Class Conduct Sleeping, eating, or talking in class is not allowed. Please make sure cell phones are off and use
care if arriving late or leaving early. The U’s policy on Classroom Expectations Guidelines will be enforced.
Students who disrupt the educational process (e.g. talking with friends) will need to leave the classroom.
Academic Dishonesty Academic dishonesty in any portion of the academic work for a course shall be
grounds for awarding a grade of F or N for the entire course. The academic code of conduct can be found
at http://www1.umn.edu/regents/policies/academic/Student_Conduct_Code.pdf
