Lesson title : MATHEMATICS YEAR 5

Topic : 10. Perimeter

Leaning Area : 10.1 Perimeter composite 2-Shapes
Learning Objective : Pupils will be taught to find the
perimeter of
composite 2-D shapes.

Duration :60 minutes

Where the class is delivered: Classroom

Resources I use:

• Models of 2-D Shapes,

• Classroom objects
• Ruler
• Teaching courseware
• Worksheet

How I deliver the teaching component:

i. practical demonstration – measure the objects

ii. Presentation – name the shapes and show how to measure 2-
D shapes
iii. question and answers

What do your pupils do?

Step 1 (Introduction)
• Show pupils designs that have composite shapes from gift
wrappers, wallpapers, fabrics, batik designs and etc.
• Get pupils to observe and discover the individual shapes.

Step 2 (Teaching and learning Activities)

• Discuss with pupils the contents in the presentation showing.
• Get pupils to identify the geometrical shapes that showing
and state what these designs are.
• Pose the following questions
• What happens when we join the shapes? (We get new
design)

• What do we call shapes that are made of more than one

geometrical shape? (Composite Shapes)
• Do you come across these shapes in your daily activities?
Where?
• (Yes. On gift wrappers, floor designs, composition table in
classroom, etc.)

• Get pupils to answer questions orally.

• Demonstrate and explain to pupils how to perimeters of
composite 2-D shapes are measured and calculate.
• Remind pupils that we have to add all outer lines of the
shapes in order to find the perimeter.
• Pupils follow teacher to measure a composite 2-shapes
provide to them.

Step 3 (Group Activities)

Provide pupils with cut-out shapes of squares, rectangles,
and triangles each.
Ask pupils work in groups. Get pupils to measure the
perimeter of individual shapes and record the measurement.
• Ask them to create as many composite shapes as possible.

• Check to see their composite shapes have been formed

correctly.

Step 4 (Assessment)
• Prepare a worksheet to assess pupils.
• Discuss the answer and give feedback.

Step 5 (Enrichment – Project Work)

• This activity requires to the use of computers. Pupils may do
this activity at home.
• Pupils are encouraged to explore the webpages related to
perimeter of 2-D shapes.
• Pupils do the exercises from the website as many as they
could.
• Ask pupils to print out the worksheet.
• Pupils hand in the projects to teacher for feedback. These
projects can be kept in their Math’s Folio.

What are you expected learning outcomes for your pupils?

• A student should be able to measure perimeter of composite

2-D Shapes involving combination of a square, rectangle or a
triangle.

How do you assess your pupils?

i. Carryout the interactive Activity in teaching courseware
ii. demonstrate practical ability
iii.Quiz where pupils shout out the answers
iv. Group work
v. written test
vi. homework ( browse web pages)

Do you find that your pupils learn this lesson material easily?
• Yes. The materials used to attract and easy to use. Pupils in
more easily understood concepts and gives quick response.
• The teaching courseware used to reinforce the concept of
measuring 2-D shapes in a fun way.

Are there any issues that you have found with this?
• Students are more actively to and showed great interest in
the teaching and learning.
• They put more attention on measuring and find the
perimeter of the 2-D shapes provide to them.
