Bali being the international rendezvous point that it is, offers virtually
anything from anywhere in the world, including the food. So it is
worthwhile to search around the corners of the island and indulge

it. Fresh in our minds was the stir that a documentary on gigolos
on Kuta’s beaches had caused, despite not a single screening
having been held (seen), and which led to a ‘crackdown’ ordered
of suspected figures appearing in the film’s trailers. Soon after the
Time article had been published and read by the masses, many
people in Bali read the article and copied it from the net; journalists
came to the governor’s office and interviewed him for comments.
He did not show the slightest of resentment, and actually wisely
admitted to the facts conveyed in the article. He was one of the
notable figures mentioned in the article.
He seems to have wanted to express, “Let’s think positive.
Criticism also means they care. Let’s look into the main ideas and
respond to it positively, do what we have to do”.
Bali is just a small island with limited capacity. On the other
hand, hotel developments continue day after day. The increase in
demands for rooms during the peak seasons is always the reason. Quieter highlands of the island
But it becomes a big concern when the developments neglect the
environment. Some hotels are even suspected of dumping their
waste into the sea, along with many other unlawful practices.
The governor recently issued a hotel development moratorium in
3 regencies, namely Badung, Denpasar, and Gianyar (Nusa Dua to
Kerobokan is within the Badung regency, Ubud is in Gianyar, and
Denpasar is Bali’s capital city). Unfortunately this policy was not
very popular and the regents unabashedly disregarded it.
Each of the regencies wanted to show their achievements,
gaining profits but often neglecting the environment. Nature never
complains at first, but it will react gradually. Sometimes it shows its
wrath unexpectedly and can bring major impact on short notice.
The island’s government and tourism industry have to put on a
brake on these developments. In this case, we have to thank the
author of the Time article, Andrew Marshall. Reality bites. We need
to develop a better way.
Nevertheless there is one thing, equally important, which
Marshall did not describe in the article. It is a good thing that Bali
still has other pristine places. He only addressed the southern part
of Bali where the tourism industry is mostly centered.
The world tends to generalize... Just like naming the 2002 and
2005 blasts as “the Bali bombings” or even giving it a sequence
such as “Bali Bomb I” and Bali Bomb II”, which was a totally terrible
for image’s sake. As if the whole island was bombed! Slightly

Bali still has many other clean beaches, beautiful scenic places

DESTINED TO DELIVER
Pacto Ltd recently launched their annual luxury brochure “The Villas & Resorts Collection 2011” on March 25 at the Barong
Restaurant of the Bali Golf & Country Club, Nusa Dua. Pacto’s key persons, Umberto Cadamuro, Director of Business Development
and Freddy Rompas, General Manager Inbound, opened the evening with a presentation and opening speech.

It was a successful event where more than 100 General Managers, Directors
of Sales, Directors of Sales and Marketing of Hotels, Villas and Resorts in Bali,
Lombok and Java and other tourism industry representatives golfed in the morning
and enjoyed a lavish cocktail party in the evening. The guests were pampered with
the warm atmosphere, music, entertainment, cocktails, wines, and light dinner.

“While we are relying more and more on digital media for our marketing in order to
limit the use of printed material, we still find that several markets are responsive
mostly to printed advertising. The pleasure of handling a high quality book as our
latest Villas and Resorts Collection cannot be replaced by digital media, and it plays
a very important role in marketing the destination,” expressed Umberto Cadamuro.

The Villas & Resorts Collection 2011 features the assortment of properties in 6 different groups, named after famous symphonies,
featuring properties beyond Bali, such as Java and Lombok.

To talk about leisure is to talk about Pacto Ltd. Founded in 1967, Pacto is recognized as one of
the pioneers and most established organizations in the Indonesian tourism industry.

Pacto Ltd now has 17 offices and has handled 35,000 customers in 2010, and aims to reach
40,000 in 2011. Pacto built its success through creativity, innovation, professionalism and
reliability, complemented by a customer-centered way of thinking.

“We believe that people’s satisfaction is our greatest reward. We continuously increase our
standard of quality and reliability through strategies centering on customers, and we are
determined to be the most cost-efficient operator in the industry. We also believe that all
businesses should respect the environment. Therefore, we had just planted 3,500 trees in Bali,
a number 3.5 times greater than our original plan, in a parallel mission with Bali’s government to
make Bali ‘Cleaner & Greener’ and we hope that other companies including our competitors will
follow our path,” said Umberto Cadamuro.

He also said that caring for the environment is a very important part of business. Tourism has taken a lot from nature, so now it is
time to give back. This year Pacto plans to replace their entire car fleet with hybrid cars as part of their eco-friendly movement.
