Point 1

Productivity ƛ The method of using music in the classroom is found to affect the process of
learning and thinking. If work is accompanied by quiet and soothing music, it helps the listener
to think, analyze and work faster in a more efficient manner. Music develops a positive attitude
in the listeners and provides them with motivation. A study done by Thornton (2004) have
shown that music brings about remarkable improvements in the academic skills of students,
who are made to listen to certain kinds of music while studying or learning in the classroom.
Listening to pleasant music, while doing a difficult task, can make it seem easier.

The method of using music in the classroom has a positive effect on the concentration level of
the students. It is also found to improve the studentsƞ memory. Prof. Mohd Ghazali (2005) in his
research has found that the silence between two musical notes triggers the brain cells and
neurons, which are responsible for the development of sharp memory. Strong beats of music
can cause the brain waves to resonate in synch with the beat, bringing about higher levels of
concentration and alertness.

The method of using music in the classroom plays a vital role in enhancing creativity. Music has
a positive impact on the right side of the brain. Music triggers the brain center, which deal with
the development of creativity. The method of using music in the classroom is found to give
students the capacity to trust themselves. It provides them with an internal discipline. Rhythm
is known to help the students learn math. Music stimulates the brain centers that deal with
thinking, analyzing and planning, thus enhancing oneƞs organizational skills.

Classroom management ƛ The method of using music in the classroom is a useful classroom
management tool as it can be used to reduce stress level, relieve frustration, and create a
peaceful classroom environment. It is universally accepted that music can alter mood. Soothing
music can produce a calming effect and reduce tension, while fast paced music can energize
lethargic listeners. In a classroom setting, background music can calm a chaotic classroom, or
lend energy to an otherwise mundane assignment. Soothing music played at the beginning of
class, as students initially enter the classroom, reduces the tension felt by students, making
them more productive throughout the class.

In studies done by F. F. Cripe (2004) , L. Morton, J. Keshner and L. Seigel (2008) conclude that:

Ơmusic with a prominent beat stimulates an increased arousal in students which overrides the
effect of environmental distractorsƦrepetitive beat produces a reduction in muscle tension, thus
reducing hyperactivityƦ there was significant reduction in distractability among students after
being exposed to musicơ.

Therefore, using the method of music in the classroom has a beneficial effect on students which
are reducing distractibility, muscle tension and hyperactivity and thus, could create an optimum
body state for learning.

Nina Jackson in her article ƠMusic and the Mindơ says :

ƝMusic plays with your state of mind as the electrical energy generated by firing neurons creates
brain waves. The music a person chooses to listen to can influence the wavesƞ frequency, and
their state of mind. Itƞs not only the mind that is influenced by music, the body also responds.
Musical messages travel down the spinal cord, impacting the autonomous nervous system that
regulates the heart rate, blood pressure, muscular activity, metabolism, and other vital
functionsƦ

Energizing music can make your brain exercise longer and harder. It increases speed and
workload capacity Ʀ music with a strong steady beat can increase endurance, boost effort level,
increase motivation and distract from discomfort and agitationơ.

Thus, using the method music in the classroom is a usefool tool for classroom management.
Point 3

Increases learning efficiency ƛ Using the method of music in the classroom increases learning
efficiency. Many studies in recent years for example done by Taylor P. (2000) and Beufort D.
(2001) discover the effects of classical music on learning. The results of these studies are
increased I.Q.'s, accelerated learning, and greater retention of material learned.

This is so because deep in the brain there is a band of white fibers connecting the right and left
halves of the cerebrum called the corpus callosum. The corpus callosum increases in size when
humans are exposed to quiet, classical music. This increase in size increases the communication
between the two hemispheres of the brain which, in turn, increases learning efficiency.

Therefore, during learning activities, teacher can use the method of music to create an
appropriate emotional connection to the information and provide a trigger for recall. Play slow,
classical music while teacher calmly review lesson information for students. Teacher can also
use the method of music to sustain studentsƞ attention and concentration.

Plato once said that "music is a more potent instrument than any other for education." Now
scientists know why. Music, they believe, trains the brain for higher forms of thinking."

According to Emily Diane Gunthe from the article Superlearning 2000 , "It is a known fact that
music in the classsroom can be used to relax the students. Conscious breathing to 60 beats per
minute music, (such as Mozart) helps to keep students in their relaxed system for Superlearning.
The 60 beats per minute are important because that is the rate our heart beats when relaxed.
The music helps to remind the students to breathe and stay relaxed. Studying with music in the
background can be a reminder to breathe deeply. While the students are in the relaxed system,
they don't hear the music, really. The music helps to create a peaceful relaxed environment,
prime for learning and using long term memory."
