I’m reading a book titled Made to Stick:
Why Some Ideas Survive and Others Die.
The authors, Chip and Dan Heath, offer what
they call “Six Principles of Sticky Ideas”; six
reasons why certain ideas withstand the test

The gospel of Jesus Christ is the ultimate
in sticky. After two thousand years it
continues transforming hearts, lives and even
the world. Even though Made to Stick is not
a “Christian” book, the gospel demonstrates
the six principles to the fullest. This month I
want to look at three of the principles in light
of Jesus and his Good News.

The Gospel Is Sticky
(Part 1)
“are full of concrete images…because our
brains are wired to remember concrete data.
What makes something concrete? If you can
examine something with your senses, it’s
concrete.” (17, 104). Concreteness makes
the abstract understandable.
Jesus was the master of this. For
instance, he brings the abstract idea of
hypocrisy into vivid imagery: “Woe to you,
teachers of the law and Pharisees, you
hypocrites! You are like whitewashed tombs,
which look beautiful on the outside but on
the inside are full of dead men’s bones and
everything unclean.” The concept of heaven
is abstract, yet Jesus explains it this way:
“My Father’s house has many rooms; if that
were not so, would I have told you that I am
going there to prepare a place for you? And
if I go and prepare a place for you, I will
come back and take you to be with me that
you also may be where I am.” (John 3:2-3)
Our bond with Jesus was never meant to
abstract, but relational. Perhaps this is why
Jesus used vivid imagery to refer to himself:
Bread of Life; Light of the World; The Gate,
The Vine, The Good Shepherd and others.
He is nourishment for our souls, illumination
in darkness, the entrance into true life, the
substance for fruitfulness and our guardian
and defender. Let his message stick with
you.
Unexpectedness
The Heaths write, “Unexpected ideas are
more likely to stick because surprise makes
us pay attention and think” (68). There’s no
greater example of surprise than the
resurrection. The angel said to the women,
“You are looking for Jesus the Nazarene,
who was crucified. He has risen!” (Mark
16:6). Even though Jesus had spoken of
rising from the dead, they weren’t expecting

it. They were surprised.
I recently shared these principles in a church
meeting and this point resonated with one of
the members. He shared how God had
impressed upon him to speak to a particular
woman who was in obvious need, while he
was eating at a local fast food restaurant. He
saw her, realized she needed compassion,
sensed God asking him to speak with her but
did not do it. “I disobeyed and I felt badly.
I didn’t think I would ever see her again.”
Several weeks later, in a totally different
situation, the Lord unexpectedly orchestrated
another opportunity for him to speak to her
again. This time he obeyed and is so glad he
did. “God works in unexpected ways,” he
said.
The Apostle Paul reminds us that God is
still doing the unexpected. He writes, “Now
to him who is able to do immeasurably more
than all we ask or imagine, according to his
power that is at work within us” (Ephesians
3:20). Do you believe God can do more
than you can ask or imagine? Do you
believe God can do the unexpected? He can
and that’s why the gospel continues to stick.
Believe it.

person who is reading the narrator of John, the
Epistles of John and Revelation told us that in
order for him to come to the recording, first he
had to walk through the mountains for a day to
catch a jeepney bound for General Santos. Then
the ride to the City took 6 hours. He is a pastor/
farmer and left his wife and five children at
home in order to do the recording. The readers of
Jesus and Paul, (whose two parts if combined
make up 48 percent of the New Testament), also
are pastors/farmers and have traveled a long
distance to General Santos City to record their
parts.
An Update on Nathan’s US permanent visa
In late November 2010, we received an
envelope in the mail from the US Embassy.
Inside, were forms with a letter instructing us to
fill out the enclosed paperwork and send them
back to the Embassy. Nathan would then be
given an interview date for him to appear at the
Embassy. The interview will help them decide
whether to give him a visa or not. So, as soon as
we completed the Kinaray, a New Testament
president’s administration, whether or not he
was musical, material about the music
(especially hymns) heard in his White House,
the story of the words and music of his most
favored hymn and how it may have influ-
enced his spiritual journey, and especially
any crucial decisions he made while
president. The book includes the printed
version of one of all presidents’ most favored
hymns as well as a compact disc sung by the
DBU Presidential Hymns Ensemble under
the direction of Dr. Stephen Holcomb. The
book was
released in
October 2008,
just prior to the
presidential
elections, and
has gone into
its third
printing. The

It is hard to lose someone that you have known,
and it is even harder to lose someone that you love.
People sometimes ask me what Iraq was like and I
will usually tell them something funny or that I
lost two good men. I will explain what really hap-
pens in Iraq and the emotions I experienced losing

While I was in Iraq, September 2004 to April
2005, I worked as a radio operator in the Com-
mand of Operations and Control (COC), which are
