About Karma Consultants…

Karma was initiated by group of professionals with a vision of making


difference in the lives of people. It has started its operation from
January 2007 onwards. It is registered under partnership deed in Patna,
Bihar as well as registered under Indian Trust Act in Delhi. Karma is
aiming for the growth of development sector with balance approach
of rights mode and service mode of work, so that community groups
can exercise their rights & entitlements with dignity & self-respect.
Karma firmly believes that community members are not just
beneficiaries of programs but agents of social change as well. Karma
also advocate for proper coordination and liasioining between
professional & non-professional approach of intervention for
empowerment of socially & economically underprivileged community
groups.

Geographical Coverage - Currently, Karma is directly working in the


state of Bihar, where as it is providing consultancy services in the state
of Uttar Pradesh, Jharkhand, and Delhi to diversified stakeholders. In
Bihar, Karma has its’ direct presence in the district of Muzaffarpur and
through networks it has reached in 15 poorest districts of Bihar – Gaya,
Nawada, Nalanda, Jamui, Jahanabad, Bhojpur, Vaishali, Saran, Muzaffarpur,
Samastipur, Sitamarhi, East Champaran, West Champaran, Khagaria, Katihar.

Partnership with Infrastructure Leasing & Financial Services Ltd (IL&FS)


and Ministry of Rural Development, Government of India as Training
Partner - Karma Consultants has implemented the Public Private
Partnership programme supported by the Ministry of Rural
Development in the capacity as training partner to IL&FS – CDI Ltd. The
Ministry of Rural Development has given a mandate to IL&FS Cluster
Development Initiative Limited the task of setting up 100 training center
across the country to train women and youth from BPL families and also
have to get employment in Apparel Industry. Karma has supplemented
the efforts of IL&FS for giving better opportunities to socially &
economically underprivileged groups (Below Poverty Line) in all levels
of employment, including self-employment in the capacity of Training
Partner.

Duration of Partnership – October 2007 to March 2009 (pilot project).


Karma Consultants has started it training Centre in Khudhani block of
Muzaffarpur District and conducted the training programme in
coordination with district administration and local CSOs groups. Karma
Consultants was also responsible for placement of the trainees in the
industry.

Roles of Karma Consultants as Training partner…

• Creating Awareness for the Programme among the target


population
• Engaging and deploying qualified trainers for conducting the
specified training programs as per the requirements of IL&FS CDI
• Identification of Trainees as per norms, criteria and procedure
determined by IL&FS CDI in line with the guidelines / requirements of
Ministry of Rural Development, Government of India, in consultations
with DRDAs & IL&FS
• Conducting training programs as per the methodology and
schedule finalized by IL&FS
• Ensuring high quality and timely delivery of training as per
specifications determined by IL&FS
• Documentation of enrolment, trainee profiles, trainee feedback,
data on achievement of deliverables of the training program and
submission of monthly progress reports and such other reports

• Taking necessary steps to ensure the participation and attendance
of the selected trainees for training
• Providing requisite venue along with suitable infrastructure
• Providing necessary assistance to the trained persons for obtaining
jobs in apparel industry

Programme Management Structure…

Karma Consultants has involved team 10 members for successful


implementation of the training programme as per the prescribed
mandates. Project Director, Programme Manager, Centre in charge, 3-
trainers (1 female & 2 male), 2 Community Mobilizers, 1 - Placement
Support Person at work site and Guard.

Programme Support Cost

Support Received @ Rs 1000 per candidates - Initially it was Rs 1500,


but further reduce to Rs 1000 per candidates – cost for boarding,
lodging, and transportation for the trainees

Support Received @ Rs 1500 per candidates - for cost of training


partner consumables, rent, electricity, water, watch & ward and other
administrative costs

Programme Achievements…

Karma has identified 896 candidates, trained 849 and placed 552 BPL
youth and women of different locations of Bihar & Uttar Pradesh as per
the defined set of training manual. We have placed the candidates
through placement linked efforts of IL&FS CDI Ltd in M/s Zeus Clothing,
M/s Melange Clothing, Hyderabad, Banswara Syntex Ltd, Surat,
Textrade, Surat, Prathibha Syntex, Indore, Yashodhan Garments, Veeta
and Vastraa Overseas, Banglore.

Played role of Support Supervision as Resource Organization in the


State of Bihar supported by Poorest Areas Civil Society (PACS)
programme of DFID, UK

The UK Department for International Development (DFID) through its


India office has established the PACS programme which aims at
helping civil society organizations (CSOs) to assist people in the poorest
and the most backward districts of India to realize their entitlements
more effectively and in sustainable ways. The programme is
concentrating on clusters of the 108 poorest districts with cross state
boundaries, but which are located in Bihar, Jharkhand, Uttar Pradesh,
Madhya Pradesh, Chhatisgarh and Maharastra.

The Government of India has identified the districts within the focus
areas. The project is addressing the thematic areas related to Local Self
Governance, women’s empowerment, policy advocacy, Self Help and
Social Cohesion.

Karma’s roles as Resource organization…To assist the Management


Consultants (MC) in

• Provided supportive supervision of the sanctioned projects under


DFID PACS to ensure that the implementation and management of
the project design as per required outputs and outcomes and is
progressing as per required outputs and outcomes and is
progressing as per the work plan to achieve the project objectives
and goals
• Assisted Civil Society Organization (CSOs) in identifying livelihood
intervention at the community level so as to demonstrate impacts
thereof in measurable terms at the community level
• Coordinated the peer review workshop and Regional Workshops
and consolidation of learning for programme level aggregation by
the MC
• Assisted CSOs in compiling success stories, lesson learnt and
preparing documents for uploading them on Desktop Interactive
Information System (DIIS), developed for Monitoring Evaluation And
Learning (MEAL)
• Assisted CSOs in re-aligning activities and budget as per approved
Project Implementation Plan so as to formulate a common strategy
for demonstrating impact on the ground

Results – Created momentum among CSOs about the programme,


which has contributed in maximizing the impacts of the programme in
