The University of Cambridge Discovery Fund

Discovery Fund News

March 2011

We are very pleased to announce the appointment of Dr Anne Dobrée as Head of Seed Funds, effective 31
March.

Anne joined the Seed Funds team as Access to Capital and Investment Manager at the start of 2008, focusing on
the development of the Discovery Fund and biotechnology investments. She had previously worked for
Cambridge Enterprise in a variety of roles including Interim Director and Head of Technology Transfer. Anne was
a founding member of Praxis, the UK Technology Transfer Training Programme.

Anne’s keen eye for quality investment opportunities, and her support for our young and established portfolio
companies, will help ensure the continued success of companies based on University research.

Anne takes over from Dr Geraldine Rodgers, who is retiring after close to 20 years at the University of
Cambridge. I am sure you will all join me in congratulating Anne on her appointment and in wishing Geraldine all
the best in retirement. We would also like to take this opportunity to thank Geraldine for her excellent
contributions during her time with the Cambridge Enterprise.

Chief Executive, Cambridge Enterprise

Investment News
In the last quarter, two new investments have been approved.

Camfridge has received further investment to enable the next generation of high‐efficiency domestic cooling
appliances using novel technology based on magnets and magnetic materials. This technology has been
developed at Camfridge over the last five years and will deliver a 100% improvement in the efficiency of the
current mainstream A+ refrigerator. Magnetic refrigeration promises a number of benefits over conventional
methods, including up to a 50% reduction in energy consumption, elimination of gas and ease of recycling.

InputDynamics has received further funding to continue the development of TouchDevice™, a low cost software-
only acoustic interface which effectively transforms a regular mobile phone into a touch screen phone. The
company attracted considerable attention when attending the world’s biggest mobile technology fair, Mobile World
Congress, in Barcelona earlier this year. Jens Christensen, one of the company’s co-founders, was also recently
awarded the ICT pioneer award by the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council.

Funding updates

Our portfolio companies continue to make progress and raise funds. UroSens, which is commercialising point-of-
care tests for cancers of the urinogenitary tract for use in the urology clinic or doctor's surgery; and InotecAMD,
which is developing topical oxygen therapy for the treatment of hard to heal wounds, have both recently secured
further funding from existing investors.
