2. The beak type that I modeled was the pincher beak. The hornbill has a similar beak shaped to the one I
modeled. The bird uses its beak by picking in to hood or picking it up just as you would pick up something
with tweezers. The hornbill eats figs and fruits as well as insect’s small birds and small mammals. Through
its beak it carries prey to its nest.

3. Fitness in terms of natural selection means that you are fit to produce offspring that are viable. Animals
that aren’t in the same species cant reproduce and make viable offspring, now given a donkey and a horse
can make a mule, but a mule can’t produce viable offspring. Animals can be fit to survive their environment
but they aren’t truly fit unless the reproduce adding genes to the gene pool.

4. The island that I would have expirence d the best fitness, would be island A with a pincer bill. With my
pincer bill I was able to eating all the different types of foodstuffs. This island was perfect for fittest because I
didn’t have just one type of food I could eat. More variety is better for me as a bird to survive. If I was only
able to eat on food stud then if that foodstuff dissipated then I wouldn’t survive in my environment. I would
die out and not adding my genes to the gene pool.

5. The island that I would have the experienced the worst fitness, would have been on island d because
even though I have the best traits to fit this environment I have more competitor from other animals.
Competition is a huge drive in extinction, but even with that force there was a huge amount of foodstuff.

6. The beak variations that was best adapted to its environment would be the pincher bill because on all of
the islands there was huge numbers of food ingested. The foodstuff on every island might have not been
ingestible but there were huge numbers in the foodstuff that was ingestible.

7. Polar bears have adapted to their environment with their white fur to help them blend with the snow and
ice. The polar bear has a layer of fat under its skin that helps it stay warm. It also has a thick layer of fur. The
polar bear has large wide paws to help walk in the snow, when a polar bear swims in water it closes its
nostrils so that no water will be able to get in. Polar bears are so well adapted to their environment you
would find them in anything but a cold environment.

8. Overall if 2000 birds were blown to these islands the beak variants that would survive would be the
pincher bill, Spoon bill. The other two bills the prong bill and knife bill are too close in numbers to really
determine. Most of these variants are specific to one or more type of island. On island A the spoon bill and
pincher bill would flourish under these conditions. The other two bills would simply die out because of the
competition for their type of food, because they only have on option.

9. A single species can become separate for many factors. Isolation is a huge factor that can lead to
differencing species. For example the Darwin finches were the same species but because of species were
on different islands the species became dissimilar over time that though they make look the same they are
genetically different from one another.

10. This lab models Darwinian notion of natural selection more than Lamarckian notion for acquired
characteristics because if it was Lamarck’s theory then all the animals would have high ingestability. Like
Lamarck said with the giraffes that they needed food and because they need food they stretched their neck.
If they birds could have shaped their bills a different way they would have according to Lamarck. This shows
Darwin’s theory because the traits best for that environment will survive to reproduce viable offspring,
because they have the food source.
