WHITEN YOUR SMILE - Questions Behind Tooth Whitening
There are many causes of tooth staining. Certain medicines, tooth trauma, root fillings, and foods and beverages can cause tooth discoloration over time. Some
discolorations are superficial while others are internal. Both can be effectively treated by a dentist; professional whitening is the best option to safely lighten
discolored teeth.
Bleaching agents break down into tiny molecules and move in all directions so even if the entire tooth is not covered with bleach, the entire tooth is
whitened.2
Numerous studies have proven the effectiveness of peroxides in whitening teeth. Enamel, dentin, existing fillings, and bonding materials are not affected by the
whitening agents, nor are they harmed by the whitening materials.
If bleaching before bonding, allow a period of 7–10 days after bleaching. The high concentration of
oxygen in the tooth could significantly and adversely affect polymerization of the resins.3

Procedure
Push material from syringe to syringe 5 times back and forth, remixing contents. Push
varnish into white syringe for delivery. Twist on FX Flex tip tightly and bend tip up to
90º angle if desired. Varnish will not flow freely if tip is bent too far.
Blot teeth dry prior to application. Express a small bead from the tip. Brush a smooth
FX Flex tip layer onto area being treated. Gently pull the lip over the tooth surface to ensure saliva
#6026 - 75pk - pg 130 contact with the varnish. The varnish hardens when it comes in contact with the saliva
and will stay in place for several days to weeks.
• Virtually invisible on teeth
• Kid-friendly flavors
• Consistent dose of fluoride
• Easy, no-mess placement,
even in hard to reach areas
Uses
Flor-Opal Varnish White produces a mechanical/chemical occlusion
of the dentinal tubules in the treatment of tooth hypersensitivity.
The AAPD recommends fluoride varnish “for use as a preventative
adjunct to reduce enamel demineralization in children identified Typical varnishes are yellow, as shown Severe decalcification and caries due

PROBLEM: STAIN UNDER HYDROPHOBIC PROVISIONAL CEMENT
SOLUTION: Use sealing provisional hydrophilic cements (i.e., UltraTemp)
OR BETTER YET:
Use a quality sealing provisional cement like Ultradent’s non-eugenol, hydrophilic, polycarboxylate, paste-to-paste UltraTemp cement.
Similar staining can occur even under definitive direct or indirect restorations if contamination is on the preparation prior to bonding. Scour and/or etch as
needed prior to DBA application. For scouring, we recommend Consepsis Scrub with a STARbrush.

Amelogen Plus is an excellent choice for designing Class I, II, III,
IV, V, and VI restorations, as well as direct veneers. It is perfect for
both posterior and anterior restorations because of its wear
resistance, strength, simplicity, and polishability.
“I am pleased with Amelogen’s ease of placement, its adaptability to tooth color, and its
predictability to last as a posterior restoration.”
