On behalf of the Parliament of Canada, I would like to extend my congratulations to all

parishioners on the 75th Anniversary of St. Patrick’s Parish.

Since its inception, the very faithful stewards of St. Patrick’s Parish have worked tirelessly
to create a welcoming spiritual community in Markham. Parish staff and volunteers are
continually involved in various Markham-area activities in support of our community’s
evolving needs.

Please accept my warmest greetings as St. Patrick’s celebrates the Under the Harvest
Moon Gala Evening fundraiser this fall. I have no doubt that the Parish will meet its
Capital Project goals and realize the many improvements that its faithful stewards have
planned.

St. Patrick’s Church 1932-2007

Although St. Patrick’s Parish is celebrating the seventy fifth anniversary of its
founding, the nucleus of the Catholic community in Markham was implanted as
early as 1840.

About that time, hundreds of families emigrated from Ireland in flight from the
ravages of famine caused by the failure of the potato crop. Many settled in To-
ronto, but without doubt, some who had farmed in the Old Country aspired to
establish farms in Ontario. These were our forefathers in the faith in our town
of Markham.

The archives of the Archdiocese of Toronto record three names: Patrick Cos-
grove, John Corcoran and Michael O’Neil. While all that is known of these men
and their families is that mass was offered occasionally in their homes by an
itinerant priest, Father James Quinlan, one can only imagine and marvel at the
staunch faith which sustained them as they put down roots in a new country.

In 1853, Mr. William Nash, Mr. A Devine and Father M. O’Laughlin purchased
a lot in Markham in anticipation of the building of a church. Subsequently, in
1863, according to the archives, the following report of Bishop Lynch to his
superior, Bishop de Charbonnel states “I waited till the New Year to give Your
Lordship our little news… a nice church, which cost $600.00 was built this year
in Markham Village by Rev. Father James O’Donahue”.

Some years later, a site was established on Rouge Street in 1870 which was
to serve the community for one hundred years. Many of our parishioners still
fondly remember worship and friends from the days at Rouge Street.

When St. Patrick’s relocated to its current location, (which had been farmland),
in 1970, there were just over 800 families in the parish. Our Pastor during this
period was Father John Francis Culnan, who served from 1962 to 1979. In the

following years, the Rectory was added to create the church we know today.

Since 1970, besides the addition of the Rectory, two major enhancements to
the church have been undertaken. First, the installation of new stained glass
windows was completed. Our pastor at that time, Father Michael Waites, said
that he hoped the new windows would be an inspiration to meditation for adults,
and instructional to children.

Now, in our 75th year, we have undertaken to install a new pipe organ to en-
hance our worship through music, create a legacy for the next 75 years and
establish this generation as pioneers in our own right.

“Under the Harvest Moon Fundraising Gala Evening”, part of St. Patrick’s Church’s
75th Anniversary celebrations, will help ensure our parish enjoys beautiful music for
at least 75 years by helping to finance the purchase of a new pipe organ. What a
wonderful legacy for St. Patrick’s and everyone who has helped make this year and
this event so memorable.
Since our current organ failed prior to midnight Mass in December 2002, an all-vol-
unteer team of parishioners and outside helpers has worked enthusiastically to review
options and then recommend a beautiful new Letourneau pipe organ for St. Patrick’s.
At the time the announcement was made, Father Michael Machacek said,
“Our organ – the central instrument in most of our Liturgical celebrations – must be
replaced. We owe it to ourselves, our community and our God to ensure a new organ
will reflect the depth and sincerity of our faith and worship. The new pipe organ will
fill St. Patrick’s with magnificent music for at least 100 years.” (continued next page)

The final decision to purchase a pipe organ was based on the following criteria:
• Satisfying the Liturgical requirements of the Parish
• Producing a beautiful sound
• Visually complementary to the Church
• Availability of prompt and reliable service
• Vendor reputation and financial stability
• Sound, long term investment

The new pipe organ will have 1,507 pipes compared to the current 400. It will take
30 months to build and 7 weeks to install. The improved quality of the music – and
its contribution to our worship – will be overwhelming.
In the year 2082, at the 150 year anniversary celebration of St. Patrick’s Parish,
the organ music that inspires those parishioners will be produced by the organ
purchase you are supporting tonight.

Lawrence Mitchell
Lawrence entered the industry at the tender age of 16.
He studied Classical French and European Cuisine at
Humber College, earning an honours degree in Culinary
Arts. Since then, he has won numerous awards, includ-
ing those from the Escoffier Society, Garde Manger, Fine
Dining and Pastry Competitions.
He has cooked for a constellation of luminaries in the
Theatre, Television and Motion Picture Industries, for
heads of state during the 1988 G7 Summit, and for the sporting elite in the Davis Cup and
Queen’s Plate. He became a favourite in the Entertainment Business, where clients included
Aerosmith, Madonna and U2. However, Lawrence’s eyes were set on the lofty prize of seeing
the world, all expenses paid, with the world’s greatest rock ‘n roll band, a goal he achieved in
80 cities around the world as Head Chef for the Rolling Stones World Tours.
Drawing on his broad experience and extensive travels, our Bermuda-born Chef likes to
“push the boundaries” in exploring a wide variety of International Cuisines. These culinary
expeditions are always to the inevitable delight of all of us here at Grand Baccus.

One of the posters advertising the upcoming World Youth Day in Sydney
Australia reads “A tourist needs a map. A pilgrim finds direction.” Being a pilgrim
is much more than traveling to a foreign country and exploring it. A pilgrim’s goal
is not only to encounter a new land, but to encounter it in search of spiritual guid-
ance as well as in an atmosphere of sharing and witnessing religious beliefs. In the
words of Pope John Paul II, being a pilgrim is a “magnificent occasion to celebrate
and proclaim the faith of the Church.” Through prayer, reflection and personal
preparation, a pilgrimage becomes a journey that begins even before the actual
physical departure to a new country and ends long after it.
The resounding truth in this statement is reflected in our history at St. Patrick’s.
Our experience in the world of young pilgrims began in Toronto 2002 when the
entire parish was touched by the spirit and over twenty young people trekked the
distance to celebrate mass with Pope John Paul II. In 2005, eighteen youth traveled
to Germany and twelve of our fellow parishioners are now preparing to join the
pilgrimage to Australia in 2008.
It is impossible to measure the impact these experiences have on young
people, for they are profound and long lasting. However, we know that the
majority of pilgrims, past and present, are immersed in leadership roles within
the faith community ranging from youth leadership development and music
ministry leadership to chair of the pastoral council. Young people embrace
these opportunities to find direction and share their faith for it strengthens
their will to share their God-given time and talents. This, in turn, serves to make
St. Patrick’s parish, our community and the world a better place in which to live.

 GTA Swing Band www.gtaswingband.com
Celebrating its tenth anniversary, the GTA Swing Band continues to delight audiences with
its high-energy performances of popular tunes from the swing era. Specializing in the mu-
sic of Glenn Miller, Count Basie and Duke Ellington, among others, the band-founded in
March 1996-has garnered a reputation for lively, fun-filled performances that leave crowds
cheering for more. Along with playing the hits from the glory days of swing, the band also
performs songs in a variety of musical styles to suit any occasion.
In the past two years alone, the GTA Swing Band has wowed audiences at a plethora of
locales in Southern and Central Ontario. In Toronto, for instance, the band has filled
dance floors at the Royal York Hotel, Balmy Beach Yacht Club, Ash Bridges Bay Yacht
Club, St. Lawrence Hall, the Moonlight Ballroom, the Winchester, the Bamboo Club, Mr.
Slate, the historic Palais Royale and icon Dunn’s Pavilion (Kee to Bala). It has also become
a regular attraction at the Battle of the Bands at the Hamilton Convention Centre, where
it has won twice for Best Stage Show Band. In 2003 & 2005 teamed up with the Curtain
Call Players to present a musical “Sentimental Journey” to raves from critics and sold out
audience alike.
Each summer, the band also stops in
Haliburton to get swing fans “in the
mood” for giving at the annual fund-
raiser for the local hospital.
“The enthusiasm of the members and
the fun they have when playing are what
make the GTA Swing Band truly special-
and the audience picks up on that,” says
the band’s musical director, Vic Lawrence,
who has played with many of the country’s most-
renowned big bands over the past 40 years as well as
with his own band, the popular Vic Lawrence Seven.
“Like our audiences, this band consists of people of all
ages from all walks of life who are bound together by this
common interest-swing music.”

June Garber is arguably one of Canada’s busiest Jazz Singers.
Hailing from South Africa, her lineage extends back to Israel,
Spain & Russia. Toronto has been her home for the last 30 years. After a 15 year hiatus,
June has become one of Toronto’s “jewels of jazz”. She was selected by Bill King to be
on his Jazz Diva II album and he also produced her fantastic solo album, “Smile”. June
has performed locally at all of the Major Jazz Festivals on the Main Stage, clubs and
theatres. She has performed interna-
tionally, in Las Vegas, Atlantic City,
New York, Dallas, Florida & Atlanta
and also in Cuba, South Africa and
Australia.
In addition to having a remarkably
beautiful voice and repertoire, June’s
stage presence envelopes her audi-

if they are being sung to individually.
