issues with constraints in supply of components and rising input
costs. Our margins have been under pressure on account of that.
While we expect the market demand for two-wheelers to remain
bullish and we are confident of carrying on our growth trajectory,
we do foresee margins to remain under pressure in the short
term.
Mr. Pawan Munjal, MD & CEO, Hero Honda Motors Ltd said,
“We are delighted to report a record quarter with highest-ever
numbers which is extremely encouraging, coming as it does in the
face of enhanced marketplace activities and continued constraints
in supply of certain components. A series of launches, marketing
innovations and our association with India’s biggest sporting

“Having closed the financial year ’10 with sales of 4.6 million units
– way ahead of our original guidance of 4 million – we have now
set ourselves very ambitious milestones for the fiscal ’11. I am
confident that with the continuing growth momentum, strong
capital structure and a number of strategic initiatives in the
pipeline, we are well positioned to drive further growth in our
business. In financial year ‘11, we look forward to a series of
defining initiatives including aggressively expanding our
geographical reach, building on our capacities and further
augmenting our already strong brand portfolio.
“However, going forward, we will have to keep a close watch on
the commodity prices movement, and other factors such as
inflation and interest rate scenario. These factors will play a
crucial role in the industry growth and profitability in days to
come.”
Fiscal ‘10 witnessed Hero Honda launch nine new models across
segments. All the new launches are doing well and have been
driving volumes for the company. Sales of Pleasure have already

Awards
New Delhi, October 21, 2009: With the second quarter (July-
September) 2009-10 earnings at 94.9 per cent growth over the
same period last year, Hero Honda Motors Ltd (HHML), the
world's largest two-wheeler manufacturer, continues to set new
milestones. The company’s highest quarterly earnings of all
time at Rs 597.14 crores in profit after tax (PAT) represents
the second consecutive record quarter of solid and growing
revenues and profits.
“Sales in the second quarter have also benefited from our focus
on introducing market leading products during the festive season.
Hero Honda will continue to innovate further and deliver on its
long term growth strategy.”
One of the key pillars of Hero Honda’s winning strategy has been
to consistently keep introducing new, advanced products and
maintaining a balanced product portfolio. True to this strategy and
with the objective of bringing added cheer to customers during
the festive season, the company recently launched three new
models. The new premium bike from the Hero Honda stable - the
fuel injected ZMR has clearly turned out to be a favorite amongst
bikers across the country. With the introduction of the ZMR, Hero
Honda now offers as many as five models in the premium
segment - Hunk, CBZ Xtreme, Achiever, Karizma and the ZMR.
The company also introduced two more models – a refreshed
version of the best-selling Hunk in the premium segment, and a
Special Edition Splendor+ to commemorate the iconic brand’s
landmark cumulative sales of One Crore. The company has lined
up some more launches in the coming months.
Hero Honda is also going to be the title sponsor of the FIH Men’s
Hockey World Cup, to be held in Delhi next year. With this, Hero
Honda is now actively involved with the promotion of all major
sports in the country – cricket, football, hockey and golf.
The speed and strength of our business model has injected strong
momentum into our market positions and paced our growth. We
will continue our dynamic development of the two-wheeler market
by maintaining a strong focus on expanding the customer reach
and by offering technologically superior products. We have a
rigorous expansion plan in place.”
With over 59 per cent market-share in the domestic motorcycle
market and with sales of over a million units in the quarter, the
robust top line growth has largely contributed to the strong
bottom line performance. Several other key factors such as cost
rationalization across the board, softening of commodity prices,
and tax benefits also contributed to the bottom line. The current
quarter reflects a substantial tax benefit accrued on account of
the company’s full utilization of the tax benefits available for the
Haridwar plant, which resulted in bringing down the overall
effective tax rate.,
Mr. Pawan Munjal, MD & CEO, Hero Honda Motors Ltd., said
"FY'09 - our 25th Year - has been a path-breaking year for us. We
continue to set new benchmarks even as recessionary trends and
sluggish market situation afflict firms across the globe. We grew
at 12 per cent during FY'09 even as the industry grew by mere
five per cent. Our Q4 volumes growth - 13 per cent - was more
than three times that of the industry growth of four per cent
during the period. The dividend payout is in recognition of the
company's strong financial performance and is indicative of the
Board's confidence in the company's strategic direction. With
more than 57 per cent share in the domestic motorcycle market,
we are in the strongest position in the company's history.”

Hero Honda reported 44 per cent growth in profit after tax (PAT)
at Rs 272.87 crore for the first quarter of this financial year. Hero
Honda’s profit after tax in the corresponding period last fiscal
(April-June, 2007-08) stood at Rs 189.84 crore.
Hero Honda’s cumulative sales for the first quarter (Q1) this FY
stands at 8,94,244 units - a growth of 11 per cent over Q1 last FY
(2007-08). Hero Honda had sold 8,02,853 units of two-wheelers in
Q1 in the last FY.
Mr. Pawan Munjal, MD & CEO, Hero Honda Motors Ltd., said
“We continue to demonstrate leadership performance -
profitability in tandem with increasing market share. We have
continued to invest in further spreading our distribution network,
expanding into new markets in semi-urban, rural and upcountry
areas; and in brand building initiatives through our customer
focused advertising and leveraging our various properties such as
cricket etc – resulting in strong top line growth. Simultaneously,
we have continued to focus on all-round efficiency improvement
and cost rationalization across the board. This two-pronged
strategy has helped us maintain profitability, even as we continue
to further consolidate our near 55 per cent share in the domestic
motorcycle market.”
Mr. Pawan Munjal, MD & CEO, HHML, said “Hero Honda has
taken the voice of the customer to the government, and
consequently the excise duty on two-wheelers has been reduced
to 12 per cent from 16 per cent. This is a welcome move, and we
are happy to pass on the entire benefit to customers. The
reduction in excise duty cut will enable us to draw more
customers to our fold, but the basic factors causing the industry
slowdown still remain unattended. Credit financing has been
withdrawn in some key markets, while interest rates on consumer
loans also remain very high. This credit squeeze continues to be
the most critical factor adversely impacting industry growth, and
we still don’t see any indication from the banks and the
government to address this concern. For the industry to make a
turnaround and get back on the path of growth, the government
has to address these key issues.”
