New push
to reduce
smoking
Despite smokers
claiming it won’t
change their habits the
Federal Government is
embarking on cigarette
packaging laws which
will be the most
prohibitive in the world.
Federal Health
Minister Nicola Roxon
said plain packaging
was the latest step in
the Government’s fight
to reduce the toll on
families from smoking
related deaths.
“The chilling facts
are that smoking kills
15,000 Australians a year
and costs society $31.5
billion – helping people
to give up smoking and
minimising their chance
of them starting are
health priorities for the
Government,” Ms Roxon
said.
“This plain packaging
legislation is a world
first and sends a clear
message that the glamour
is gone – cigarette packs
will now only show the
death and disease that
come from smoking.
“The new packs have
been designed to have
the lowest appeal to
smokers and to make
clear the terrible effects
that smoking can have
on your health.
“The legislation will
restrict tobacco industry
logos, brand imagery,
colours and promotional
text appearing on packs.”
Under proposed new
laws the only thing to
distinguish one brand
from another will be
the product name in a
standard colour, position
and standard font size
and style.
“In addition, health
warnings will be updated
and increased from 30 per
cent to 75 per cent of the
front of the pack, as well
as 90 per cent of the back.
The Government plans
the legislation to begin on
January 1, 2012, with all
products on sale required
to comply with the new
laws within six months.

Building revival
Plans to reignite Queensland’s struggling
construction industry were thrashed out by key
members of the state’s building, development and
finance industries at a State Government Building
Revival Forum in Brisbane on Tuesday.
Deputy Premier Paul Lucas said the Global
Financial Crisis had taken a massive toll on the
sector and the forum aimed to bring the industry
together to look at ways to turn it around.
“The severity of this downturn took the industry
by surprise and the Building Revival Forum is the
first step towards a coordinated response to get
the ball rolling again,” Mr Lucas said.
“The State Government is committed to doing
everything in our power to get the industry back
to full steam as soon as possible and today’s forum
is a great start.”
The forum was attended by Fraser Coast Mayor
Mick Kruger and UDIA Fraser Coast branch
president Daniel Poacher.
Senior Sergeant Dan Willett launched the FAST (Fast Access to Services and Treatment) program at Council chambers last
Wednesday. The program was founded by Sue Rewald (second from right) and first implemented in Bundaberg last year.

Nuisance calls
Nuisance calls to Triple Zero (000) are clogging the
system with almost 40 per cent of the 8.8 million calls
expected this year predicted to be non-genuine.
Telstra’s Wide Bay General Manager Doug McClure
said non-genuine calls seriously impacted emergency
services’ capacity to respond to emergency calls.
“Triple Zero should only be dialled in life-
threatening or time critical situations when callers
require a response from police, fire or ambulance
services,” Mr McClure said.
“Non-genuine calls can be received from
fax machines, misdialled mobiles and, most
disappointingly, deliberate hoaxes and abusive callers.
These calls divert Triple Zero operators and emergency
dispatchers from real, time-critical emergencies.”
