Pigment: Inorganic, organic and metallic pigments: examples, properties and criteria for
selection color, tinting strength light fastness, bleeding characteristics hiding power, refractive
index, particle size, specific gravity chemical reactivity, thermal stability, anti corrosive
properties, Important pigments, their properties & methods of manufacture: Titanium dioxide,
zinc oxide carbon black, oxides of iron red lead, ultramarine blue, Prussian blue, phthalocyanine
green and blue, zinc chrome, lead chrome, barium and potassium chromate’s, aluminum powders
& paste, Extenders – Important properties, and their contribution to film properties. Blanc fix,
china clay, gypsum, mica and talc.
UNIT - III
Natural resins: Rosin and shellac. Synthetic resins: Alkyd resin, Phenolic resins, amino
resins, polyurethane resin, epoxies, chlorinated rubber, vinyl resins with special reference
to acrylics, Solvents and its blends properties, criteria for their selection, concept of
solubility parameter, evaporation rates, fire hazards, toxicity, pollution, water as a
solvent, Plasticizers, properties, types, applications, Additives: driers, dispersing agents,
anti skinning agent, leveling agents, anti fungal agents, anti foaming agents.
UNIT - IV
Specialty coatings: High solids, powder coatings, UV curable coatings, water soluble coatings,
heat resistant coatings, automotive coatings, marine coatings, fire retardant coatings, indoor and
outdoor coatings, coatings for swimming pools. Space and aircraft coatings, coatings for
chemical industries.
