ORGANIC SURFACE COATINGS TECHNOLOGY

(ELECTIVE - I–4)

UNIT – I

Importance of organic surface coatings: Decorative and protective functions. Introduction to


corrosion and its prevention organic surface coatings vs other methods of corrosion protection.
Major components of surface coatings: Film formers, pigments, extenders and additives.
Differences between paints, varnishes and lacquers, Classification of Fats and Oils, General
properties of oils, their characteristic properties: Acid value, hydroxyl value Iodine value
Saponification value and their importance, Types of Polymerization, Fundamentals of film
formation: Thermal and Oxidative polymerization of oils, Principles of Natural and Synthetic
drying oil: eg. Linseed Oil, Tung Oil, Soya been oil. Modification of oils to improve their drying
properties with special reference to bodying oils, dehydrated castor oil and isomerisation of oils.

UNIT - II

Pigment: Inorganic, organic and metallic pigments: examples, properties and criteria for
selection color, tinting strength light fastness, bleeding characteristics hiding power, refractive
index, particle size, specific gravity chemical reactivity, thermal stability, anti corrosive
properties, Important pigments, their properties & methods of manufacture: Titanium dioxide,
zinc oxide carbon black, oxides of iron red lead, ultramarine blue, Prussian blue, phthalocyanine
green and blue, zinc chrome, lead chrome, barium and potassium chromate’s, aluminum powders
& paste, Extenders – Important properties, and their contribution to film properties. Blanc fix,
china clay, gypsum, mica and talc.

UNIT - III

Natural resins: Rosin and shellac. Synthetic resins: Alkyd resin, Phenolic resins, amino
resins, polyurethane resin, epoxies, chlorinated rubber, vinyl resins with special reference
to acrylics, Solvents and its blends properties, criteria for their selection, concept of
solubility parameter, evaporation rates, fire hazards, toxicity, pollution, water as a
solvent, Plasticizers, properties, types, applications, Additives: driers, dispersing agents,
anti skinning agent, leveling agents, anti fungal agents, anti foaming agents.

UNIT - IV

Dispersion of pigments, in the paint formulation concept of critical pigment volume


Concentration, Manufacturing methods of paints, Application methods: viscosity consideration,
brush application, spray application, electrostatic spray application, curtain coating, dip coating,
powder coatings, roller coatings, electro deposition of coatings. Testing of paints: wet paint and
dry paint testing film thickness, adhesion, and resistance coverage. Defects in paints and
paintings and their remedies: defects in grinding skinning, sagging, bleeding, flooring, floating,
brushing, orange peel, fish eye, brush marks, lifting.
UNIT - V

Specialty coatings: High solids, powder coatings, UV curable coatings, water soluble coatings,
heat resistant coatings, automotive coatings, marine coatings, fire retardant coatings, indoor and
outdoor coatings, coatings for swimming pools. Space and aircraft coatings, coatings for
chemical industries.
