II – Reading Comprehension ( 70 Marks )
A) Read the first passage , then answer the questions below :
Few years ago, it was clear that raw materials* such as food, oil, wood, etc…are getting
scarcer. Man’s demands are, however, growing greater. But there is a limit. We are quickly
approaching that limit. The world is so used to treating the raw materials as though they were
lasting forever that it has not been doing enough research into developing things that may be
taken instead of them.
Now everyone realizes the danger, more is being done to protect our natural raw materials
and to recycle them and use them again when possible. In fact, recycling has been practised for
centuries. Not long ago, women used to keep all glass jars for making their own jam and
marmalade. When people could not buy clothes, toys or books because they were expensive,
they were handed down from the eldest to the youngest.
After the last war, industry encouraged society to buy and to throw any things used for
a short period to be replaced by new ones. People had a lot of money to do that. The trouble
was that raw materials were being used at a great speed. Industry was interested in making
money, not caring how much raw material was being used up.
Now, we are facing great shortage of raw materials, people are more careful about what
they buy as prices are getting higher because industrialists have to pay more for fewer raw
materials. Therefore many people encourage recycling. For example, waste paper is used for
packaging and newspapers.

* Raw materials : not processed , in a natural state.

III- Summary Making : ( 20 Marks )

Read the following passage , then answer the questions below (169 words ) :
There are various methods that are used at school to evaluate students. Periodical tests and
final exams are some of these means. A teacher can also notice in class how far his students are
responsive to him and interested in their work. Some teachers would often test their students on
the spot so as to see they are on task. School activities, too, may be an area in which the
learners can be evaluated. They can practise doing things physically or mentally. This can show
their interests, tendencies, hobbies and characters.

Evaluation is vital not only for developing the learning process but for motivating the
students to promote their study as well. Learning without testing could never achieve its ends,
for testing does not only reveal the students' progress but it also evaluates methods of teaching.
Therefore, evaluation aims at improving the students' level and the teachers' methods.
According to the marks the students have scored, a teacher can adopt new methods to improve
the standards of his students.

In four sentences, summarize the importance of evaluation for both students and
teachers:
