ArtZpace 2012 - Guidelines & Background

www.pittwater.nsw.gov.au/artzpace
Background

ArtZpace is an annual exhibition initiated by Pittwater Council. Developed as part of Pittwater’s Cultural Plan,
ArtZpace aims to: promote emerging local artists; give artists experience running an exhibition; and to offer the
community access to a high quality exhibition.

ArtZpace is open to young and emerging local artists. The exhibition provides selected artists with not only the
opportunity to display and sell their work in a professional setting, but also to contribute to the management
of the show. Under the guidance of a professional co-ordinator, artists market and mount the show, and build
invaluable skills and networks to support their careers as Art practitioners.

11 artists participated in ArtZpace 2011. Representing a broad spectrum of arts forms, participating artists
enjoyed a number of positive outcomes through ArtZpace, including sales, commissions, representation in
commercial galleries and strengthened peer networks.

In 2012 ArtZpace will display the work of between 10 and 16 artists.

Information

Artists requirements / costs

ƒƒ Successful applicants must be willing to work as part of a group and take an active role in the
organisation of the show with assistance from the ArtZpace Co-ordinator.
ƒƒ Artists will contribute financially to the costs of the show, which include hall fees, publicity and
promotion, and opening night costs. The contribution will be approximately $600 from each artist.
ƒƒ Each artist will be required to attend group meetings which will be held out of business hours at
Avalon Recreation Centre. Commencing in June 2011, these meetings will be held once a month
prior to the show and may increase in frequency as the exhibition approaches.
ƒƒ Artists are responsible for manning the show and sales desk for the exhibition period. Artists need
to make provision to cover shifts between Friday 6 and Sunday 15 January 2012.
ƒƒ Artists will hang and remove their works under the guidance of the hanging committee and
co-ordinator. Participating artists need to make their own provisions for supplying and moving
additional exhibition furniture, or large artworks.
ƒƒ ArtZpace will not have exclusive use of the centre throughout this time. Other activity rooms will be
made available for hire by other artists in the area for the purpose of exhibition.
ƒƒ Opening nights of other groups may occur on the same night. All activities planned for the
evening must be approved by the Recreation Centre Co-ordinator.

Application and selection process

ArtZpace is aimed at young and emerging artists. Priority will be given to applicants who are under 30 years
of age, and or those who have less than five year professional exhibition experience1. Artists with greater
professional experience will still be considered and are encouraged to apply. Similarly, local artists will be
given priority, however all artists are encouraged to apply.

The artists will be selected on the basis of artistic originality; merit and creative diversity across the
group; and a demonstrated commitment to furthering their artistic career.

ƒƒ Applicants will be advised of the judging outcome by post. The decision of the selection panel is final
and no correspondence will be entered into.

ƒƒ Artists working across all media are encouraged to apply.

ƒƒ Artists are only eligible to show for two consecutive years at ArtZpace.

ƒƒ The application form and relevant attachments must be submitted by 5pm on Friday 20 May 2011.
