thoughts of others. There have been far too many genocides in the history of man kind,
such as the Holocaust and the Armenian genocide from the Turks. The world founded an
organization called the United Nations to make sure something as redundant as genocide
would never take place again. Of course with man kind being flawed and imperfect as it
is, the UN has failed in its job to stop the genocide that is taking place currently in
Darfur. The United Nations use words without applying disciplinary actions, violates the
moral and legal obligation they have under the genocide convention. Most importantly
they violate every countries sense of right and wrong and the standards we have as
primarily failing at what it exist to do, protect and help its citizens. The man who is
mostly responsible for this is a man by the name Omar Al-Bashir. Omar is a self
appointed dictator who never cared about the well being of his people. Drought,
overpopulation, and mistreatment led to the revolt against the government. Omar was an
Arab who saw fit to see that the fraction of the Sudan that was Arab would get treated
with better care then the others. This spurred the battles that were fought later on.
The Sudanese government lost the majority of the battle and was running out of
arresting journalists. The Sudanese government was able to hide what hade been going on
for sometime. Next the government released an evil upon Darfur by getting there own
versions of mercenaries called the Janjaweed. These people known as the Janjaweed go
from place to place killing and raping everything in sight. They are ruthless killers and
dehumanize everyone they come arcoss. They take sons away from there mothers and
either kill them or force them to kill their mothers. The mothers and daughters will be
most likely reaped and killed by these men because they have no conscious. This is quote
from a woman named Kalimaa a resident of the village of Kidinyir, Darfur. “My son was
clinging to my dress. An Arab looking man, in a uniform with a military insignia, stopped
his car next to me. He grabbed my son from me and threw him into a fire [2]." No one
should have to go through what she had gone through and no one should have saw what
she saw happen right in front of her. The worst part of this is that the most sinister things
like this happen daily for the people of Darfur, whose only comfort is to see the face of a
loved one but, then to have that one comfort deprived from them as they see a loved one
There is no doubt that this war or genocide in Darfur is getting out of hand. The
government uses the Janjaweed like their own personal army. The government supplies
theses men with weapons and other thing to carry out their orders. The government
denies supporting the Janjaweed and denies the fact that any of this is taking places. The
war has spiraled so out of control that they have brought their war into Chad. This
happened because villagers who are not killed are suddenly homeless, and the number of
homeless has been estimated at more than two million [3]. Many of these refugees have
sought asylum in refugee camps in the neighboring country of Chad. So now there are
attacks going happening on Chad soil, which has resulted in the deaths of Chad soldiers.
Only non Arab residents of Darfur are being attacked in this horrible war which makes it
a genocide, but worst of all its genocide between two groups that are both African.
The consequences for this genocide will be unheard of and should be as brutal as
the crimes that they have committed. The escalating violence in Darfur has resulted in an
estimated 200,000 to 500,000 deaths since 2003. Approximately one in twelve people
have been killed from 2003 to 2006[4]. Thanks to the Sudanese governments ethnic
cleansing and their effectiveness to cut off aid, it was reported that in May 2004 that over
350,000 people died as a result of starvation and disease. Also close to 2.7 million people
have been displaced since the start of this genocide in January of 2003. These numbers
I thought we study the wrongs and injustices of history for the same reason that
we study genocide, and for the same reason that psychologists study the minds of
murderers and rapists [5]. To understand how evil things happen and why they repeat
themselves. It is very hard to comprehend or justify why actions weren’t taken by the
United Nations to help the crisis in Darfur. We where told that around 60 years ago, the
world made a commitment to put an end to the crime of genocide by ratifying the United
Nations Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide. This is
however not the case for minor and trivial reasons. They say that it is not a genocide
because they are so called alleged random killing and that they didn’t want to declare war
on the Sudanese government. Also the Sudanese government says this as another form of
imperialism and that all the United Nations wants to do is take its rescores. They have
because of some of the members of the United Nations didn’t want to. Members such as
China and Russia had more stakes in it then the other members in the United Nations.
China gets a fair amount of their oil from Sudan so it makes since for them to keep in the
Sudanese government’s good favor. Also china and Russia allegedly sold their weapons
to Sudan. Its was also difficult for the United Nations to pass anything to help the people
in Darfur because China and Russia have the power to veto anything bill that would be
passed by the United Nations. The untied nations placed a trade embargo with the
Sudanese government that stated that no members in the United Nations where allowed
to trade with Sudan but it has been seen that the Sudan warriors have been seen with
Chinese weapons and Russian helicopters that where painted white to hide where they
There have been some contributions made toward stopping the crisis in Darfur.
On July 14 2008 the International Criminal Court filed ten charges of war crimes against
Sudan's President Omar al-Bashir. These charges included three counts of genocide, five
crimes against humanity, and two counts of murder. The ICC's prosecutors said that
Omar Al Bashir thought of the plan to destroy and significant amount of tribal groups in
Darfur because of their ethnicity. There is a warrant that was issued on March 4, 2009 for
the arrest of Omar Al Bashir, which took 6 years longer then it should have been.
The main purpose of the United Nations is to realize that "All humanity is one
undivided and indivisible family, and each one of us is responsible for the misdeeds of all
the others. I cannot detach myself from the wickedest soul [6]." Once the entire world
realizes this then we can live in a world with genocide. This of course is an ideal that
some say is unattainable due to the fact that humans never learn from their mistakes.
People will always look out for their own well being before others and that is why
something like Darfur will happen again. I hope that after seeing another holocaust take
place, we will also come to realize that neutrality helps the oppressor, never the victim
and that Silence encourages the tormentor, never the tormented [7]. We are all human and
all make mistakes but we must hope that the world will help put an end to the genocide in
Darfur so we can never witness the brutality that we have seen take place in Darfur.
