The flowers of the Holy Land here
beautifully blooming in one of the valleys
in Nazareth, around the Sea of Galilee.
Inset far above shows another pictures of
the flowers of the Northern Israel which
is the same area. Then, the second inset
shows Mary as the Virgin of Nazareth
carrying a Rose because she is the Rose
of Sharon, the Lily of the Valley of the
Holy Land. NO WOMAN IN ISRAEL
CAN CLAIM TO BE THE ROSE OF
SHARON AND THE LILY OF THE
VALLEY. Only Mary fits the bill. She is
MARY OF NAZARETH.

Welcome Brother. About the Flores de
Mayo: It is not an official doctrine but a
pious practice which is of course Biblical.
Flores de Mayo is Spanish. The English is
Flowers of May. But it is basically the
Catholic devotion of offering the
beautiful flowers of the Spring time [April-
May] to remind us of the love story
between Christ and His Church and of the
Holy Women whose lives were like a
fragrant flowers offered to God. The
Biblical imagery of flowers in Spring time
is very beautiful and is the source of many
deep Christian Spirituality and Mysticism
as these passages from SONG OF SONGS:

Song 2:12 “The flowers appear on
the earth; the time of the singing of
birds is come, and the voice of the
turtle is heard in our land;”
The Book of Songs or Canticle of Canticles
of Solomon speaks of a love story between
God and the human soul. Here God is
presented as a Male Lover, a handsome
King and a Bridegroom while the human
soul is presented as a Virgin, Pure and
Beautiful Maiden.
Even though for Catholic theology that
maiden refers to the Church and to every
soul thirsting for God we cannot deny that
the first lover of Christ among the
Christian believers is the Blessed Virgin
Mary. She is the Virgin model of
Christian purity of heart whose body and
soul have been offered to God. That is why
as the Song of Songs speaks of a Beloved
Girl the Gospel of Luke speaks of Mary as
“lubos na pinakamamahal ng Dios”
[Lucas 1:28 Ang Biblia]. The literal
English translation of which is “The Most
Beloved of God”. In other Bible
translations it is rendered “full of grace”
[Douay-Rheims Version] or “highly
favored” [King James Version].
Mary loved Jesus more than her life
because allowing herself to become
pregnant not caused by her husband is
punishable by death. She loved Jesus
more than Joseph because she was ready
to be rejected by Joseph for the sake of
the Messiah. She loved the Lord more
than family because she was ready to be
forsaken or abandon by her family if ever
she will be found pregnant prior to the
wedding. Thus, Mary has the right to the
claim of being the First Virgin beloved of
God and loved Him in return. Thus, she
has the right to exclaim:
Songs 2:1 “I am a Rose of Sharon, a
lily of the valleys.”
Indeed, Mary lived in Nazareth a place
famous for flowers such as lilies and roses
being near the lake and also near the
valleys. Thus the prophecy:
Isaiah 35:1 “The wilderness and the
solitary place shall be glad; and the
desert shall rejoice, and blossom as
the ROSE.”
has been fulfilled in Israel at the coming
of the Messiah, in the Church because of
the graces given by the Messiah and of
course in Mary because she is the Rose
[the Virgin] in whom the Messiah burst
forth like a shoot. Thus she is also filled
with the ‘Fullness of Grace’.
Thus, the spring flowers remind us of
Mary and she in turn reminds us of our
love of God. Thus, every May we gather
flowers, then go to the Church or Chapel,
and offer these flowers before the Altar
of God and the venerated image of the
Blessed Virgin Mary. Many parishes are
even organizing beautiful cantatas, fluvial
processions and Santa Cruzan [in the
Philippines] to highlight this pious and
beautiful devotion. But the most popular
practice celebrating this is the recitation
of the Holy Rosaries either at homes or
at churches.
The practice gain widespread popularity
due to St. Philip Neri who propagated this
devotion and many Popes did the same.

 BREVE HISTORIA DEL
MES DE MAYO
El mes de mayo o mes de las flores está
dedicado a la Virgen María. Es el antiguo
mes maius de los romanos, que lo dedicaban
a la diosa Maya, diosa de las flores y de la
primavera. Mayo es el mes del apogeo de la
primavera y de las flores.
Otros dicen que era el mes dedicado a los
mayores (actualmente en uno de sus días se
celebra el día de la madre) y que le sigue
junio, el mes de los juniores o de los más
pequeños.
Las profundas raíces cristianas de la cultura
europea dieron origen a dedicar este mes a
la Virgen María.
Alfonso X el Sabio, en el siglo XIII, solía
cantar los loores de mayo en honor de la
Virgen Santísima. En las Cantigas de Santa
María dice querer trovar en honor de la Rosa
de las rosas y de la Flor de las flores.
En el siglo XVI se fue incrementando esta
devoción y cada día se consideraba un
misterio o un título de la Madre del Señor.
En este mismo siglo, en Italia, San Felipe
Neri invitaba a los jóvenes a llevar flores a
la Virgen y cantar ante sus altares.
En el siglo XVIII en Italia se celebraban en
muchas iglesias todas las tardes del mes de
mayo cantos y plegarias a la Virgen. Era la
costumbre de San Felipe Neri extendida a
toda la península itálica.
En este mismo siglo los jesuitas editaron los
primeros libros del mes de mayo consagrado
a María.
Y fue a mediados del siglo XVIII cuando
esta costumbre se extendió a toda Europa.
En el siglo XIX los papas Pío VII y Pío VIII
universalizaron esta devoción
enriqueciéndola con indulgencias.
Cada día se ofrece a María una flor, símbolo
de una virtud, que el fiel devoto se
compromete a practicar ese día. Así la
Virgen recibe la flor material y la flor
espiritual equivalente. A final del mes la
Virgen tendrá un ramillete o guirnalda de 30
flores materiales, amén del ramillete
espiritual.
Hoy día quedan muchas romerías en el mes
de mayo.

A REFLECTION ON THE GOSPEL READING
OF THE 4TH SUNDAY OF EASTER YR.A

“My solemn word is this: I am the
sheep gate. All who came before me
were thieves and marauders whom
the sheep did not heed. “I am the gate.
Whoever enters through me will be
safe. He will go in and out and find
pasture.”(Jn 6:))
A typical Filipino faithful could
comprehend what Jesus is saying
above if he has experienced the
Semites’ way of life or he has some
knowledge of the culture of the people
of the Near and Middle East. Jesus,
being a Jew knows full well the life of
the people of his time. In order to bring
home God’s word to them, Jesus uses
their day to day experiences. In today’s
gospel he uses a very familiar imageries
– first, the figure of a sheep hold or
sheep pen and then of the sheep gate
in order to draw his hearers’ attention
to his message.
Jesus then identifies to his listeners the
two kinds of shepherds. The first kind
are the shepherd owners. These are the
real shepherds. They are known as the
noble or honorable shepherds.
However, this first type of shepherds
are hard to find, even during the
biblical times. The second ones are the
hired hands. This are the thieves,
bandit, strangers and immoral ones
who take advantage of their sheep.
In his book “The Cultural World of
Jesus”, John Filch writes the following
characteristics of the noble or
honorable shepherd. First, he enters
the door instead of sneaking in some
other way. Second, the gatekeeper
knows him as the genuine shepherd of
the flock and allows him to enter the
sheep fold. Finally, he leads the sheep
in and out. Semites know that
shepherds do not lead the sheep. They
walk behind them and urge them
forward hence being able to keep an eye
for wayward stragglers. In some places,
however, shepherds walk before their
sheep and call them with a familiar cry.
It is this cry rather than simply voice
recognition that guides the sheep.
Sheep are not keen at recognizing
places. As such, they can get lost
easily. When lost, they start to panic.
Falling to the ground, they bleat so loud
that it will attract the shepherd; thus,
saving their lives.
As Jesus identifies himself as the sheep
gate, he is referring to himself as the
way towards eternal life in contrast
with the hired shepherds who lead
their sheep towards their death. In this
sense, Jesus speaks about the bonding
that exists between him and those who
believes in him. When the noble
shepherd enters the sheep hold “he
calls his own by name and, leads them
out…” and the sheep follow him
because “they recognize his voice”.
What is present here is the intimate
relationship between the shepherd and
the sheep. The shepherd knows each
one of his sheep and in return they
know him well too. This kind of
relationship did not pop up overnight
but was built over a period of time. As
the sheep experienced the way he leads
them to green pastures for their fill and
rest their trust in him also deepens. As
a consequence, all that he has just to
call each one by name and they follow
him.
As Christians, our relationship with
Jesus is or should be very much like
that between the noble shepherd and
the sheep. The more we reflect on our
experiences, the more clear it is for us
that it is God himself who leads us in
every way, guiding us and helping us
in what we have to do. Maybe we can
even say that this is what Jesus is
referring to when he says: “I came that
they might have life and have it to the
full”(Jn). By experiencing God’s love,
we come to love him in a deeper way.
With this, we become more trusting as
we realize with happiness his guidance
in all things that happen to us in each
passing day.
Thus, together with King David we sing
out with joy the words of the 23 rd
Psalm:
“The Lord is my shepherd and
I shall not want,
He makes me to lie down in
green pasture,
He leads me besides restful
waters,
He revives my soul.
He leads me into the path of
righteousness. . .
. . . though I walk through the
valley of death
I fear no evil for You are
with me.
Your rod and Your staff they
comfort me.”

JESUITS ON THE RH BILL
“(T)he debate has focused only on whether the
Bill should be passed or rejected in its present
form. Either option would not be good for
Filipinos.” by Ducky Paredes
Some Jesuits (Fr. Eric O. Genilo, S.J., Fr, John J.
Carroll, S.J., and Fr. Joaquin Bernas, S.J.) have
issued a letter on the Reproductive Health Bill
under the auspices of the Loyola School of
Theology and the John J. Carroll Institute on
Church and Social Issues. I pass this on (slightly
abridged for length) without comment but
welcome readers’ comments:
The polarization of Philippine society over the
Reproductive Health Bill has been a source of
discouragement and discontent among Filipinos.
It is unfortunate that the debate has focused
only on whether the Bill should be passed or
rejected in its present form. Either option would
not be good for Filipinos. The Church sees in the
proposed Bill serious flaws that can lead to
violations of human rights and freedom of
conscience. It would not be acceptable to pass it
in its present form. Total rejection of the Bill,
however, will not change the status quo of high
rates of infant mortality, maternal deaths, and
abortions. It is a moral imperative that such
dehumanizing conditions should not be allowed
to continue. What is needed is a third option:
critical and constructive engagement.
The Church insists on protection of human life
upon fertilization. The question to be answered
by the State is if this is the same position it will
take regarding the protection of human life.
The Philippine Constitution says that the State
will protect the life of the unborn upon
conception. It is not specified in the Constitution
whether conception means fertilization or the
implantation of an embryo in the womb. The
Constitutional Convention seemed to favor
fertilization. The definition of conception will have
a bearing whether contraceptives that prevent the
implantation of embryos would be legally allowed
or not. This definition of conception in the
Constitution must be worked out both by medical
and legal experts in order to determine the
parameters of what reproductive services can be
provided by the Bill.
At the center of the controversy regarding
abortion and the RH Bill are IUDs and other
contraceptive medications and devices that may
have the possible effect of preventing the
implantation of an embryo, which for the Catholic
Church, is considered an abortifacient effect.
Proposal: The State first has to make a clear
position whether it considers the prevention of
implantation of an embryo as an abortion. If the
State takes this position, there must be a careful
and scientifically based evaluation of each of the
medicines and devices provided by the Bill. Those
contraceptive medicines and devices which are
determined to have abortifacient effects are to be

banned even now and regardless of whether the
RH Bill is passed or not.
The mandatory nature of the sexuality education
curriculum proposed by the Bill is a concern for
the Church because it would compel Catholic
educators to teach parts of the curriculum that
may be unacceptable for Catholics. The Church
is also concerned that the parents’ right to decide
on the education of their children would be
denied by such a mandatory curriculum for all
schools.
Proposal: For the purpose of protecting academic
freedom and respecting religious traditions,
should not the right of religious schools to write
and implement their own sexuality education
curriculum according their religious traditions be
respected? For public schools and non-religious
private schools, an appointed panel of parent
representatives, educators, experts in child
development and psychology, medical experts,
and representatives of religious traditions can
write the sexuality education curriculum and the
DEPED can monitor the implementation. Parents
with children in public schools should have the
right to have their children exempted from the
sexuality education class if the curriculum is not
acceptable to them. The Constitution allows
religious instruction in public schools only if the
parents consent in writing. Should a similar
provision be enacted relative to sexuality
education? The Bill must also respect the
conscientious objection of individual educators
who refuse to teach a sexuality curriculum that
violates their religious beliefs.
Even if the majority of the population of the
country are Catholics, our democratic system
should ensure that public polices are not
determined solely by majority vote but also by a
careful consideration of the common good of all,
including non-Catholics.
The Compendium of the Social Teaching of the
Church rejects any imposition of norms by a
majority that is discriminatory of the rights of a
minority: (#422) “Because of its historical and
cultural ties to a nation, a religious community
might be given special recognition on the part of
the State. Such recognition must in no way
create discrimination within the civil or social
order for other religious groups;” (#169): “Those
responsible for government are required to
interpret the common good of their country not
only according to the guidelines of the majority
but also according to the effective good of all the
members of the community, including the
minority.”
It is the duty of various religions to teach their
faithful and form their consciences about what
their religious tradition allows and prohibits with
regard to family planning. It is the duty of the
government to provide correct and
comprehensive information on all non-
abortifacient (as defined by law) family planning
methods that are available. Consciences will thus
be better equipped to make informed choices
according to their religious traditions.
Proposal: There can be two separate parallel
programs for providing information and training,
one for NFP and another for artificial methods of
family planning (with separate budgets). The
separation of the programs will ensure that NFP
will get adequate funding and those trainers who
wish to teach only NFP for religious reasons will
not be forced to teach artificial methods. The
conscience of health workers and trainers should
be respected. If a Catholic health worker or trainer
conscientiously objects to teaching contraception
methods, he or she should be allowed to teach
only NFP methods.
The current Bill prohibits the refusal of health care
services and information based on a patient’s
marital status, gender or sexual orientation, age,
religion, personal circumstances, and nature of
work. This provision must have parameters. For
example, if a doctor refuses to administer an IUD
to a minor who requests for it, would that be
considered age discrimination?
Should the provision apply equally to both in the
public and private health care providers or
shouldn’t private practitioners have more leeway
in practicing their medicine as they see fit?
Proposal: The question of whether
contraceptives are essential medicines should be
resolved by a panel of objective medical experts
such as the Philippine Medical Association. What
contraceptives actually prevent diseases? It would
be helpful to be able to present cases where the
use of a contraceptive is a medically indicated
treatment for a particular disease or emergency
situation. If some contraceptives are ultimately
decided as essential or emergency medicines that
should be stocked in government health centers
and hospitals, no contraceptives with abortifacient
effects are to be allowed.
The above proposals are intended to generate
constructive and respectful dialogue leading to
concrete actions that would correct the RH Bill. It
is hoped that the parties involved in the RH
debate would move away from hard-line positions
and consider negotiations as a more positive step
towards working for the good of all Filipinos, with
special consideration for the unborn, the youth,
women and families in difficult circumstances.
Finally, we can turn to the following Christian
maxim as our guide in our search for answers
and solutions regarding the RH Bill: “In
essentials, unity; in non-essentials, liberty; and
in all things, charity.” For things pertaining to
protecting human life and dignity, we need to come
to a consensus for the common good; for things
that can be left to individual decisions without
violating human life and dignity, we need to
respect freedom of conscience of every Filipino
both Catholics and non-Catholics; in all our
discussions, we need to speak and act with
charity and understanding as members of the
same human family and community.

societies of apostolic life, secular institutes kag
missionary life. Sa simple nga mga tinaga ang
bokasyon sa religious consecrated life (mga pari

pangabuhi.)
4. Kinahanglan gid bala nga magpangamuyo
kita para sa Bokasyon?
Ang pagpangamuyo para sa bokasyon ginmando
ni Jesus sang sia nagsiling: “Malapad ang alanyon
pero diutay ang mangangani. Gani,
magpangamuyo kamo sa tag-iya sang alanyon
agud magpadala sia sang dugang nga
mangangani sa pagtipon sang iya patubas… Ang
tinaga nga alanyon nagakahulugan sang
Simbahan kag kalibutan, ang mangangani ukon
laborer nagakahulugan sa tanan nga nagabulig
patindog sang Ginharian sang Dios ilabi na gid
ang mga pari, relihiyoso kag mga komitido nga

5. Sin-o ang dapat magpangamuyo para sa
mga Bokasyon?
Ginasiling ini Jesus “magpangamuyo kamo sa tag-
iya sang alanyon.” iya ini ginapatuhoy sa tanan
tanan. Gani, ang bug-os nga Simbahan kag ang
nabunyagan may katungdan sa pagpanagmuyo
para sa bokasyon kag iya ini dapat nga sakdagon
para sa kaayohan sang Simbahan.
Sa pinasahi nga paagi magpangamuyo man kita
para sa dulot sang pagka-mapinadayunon sang
tanan nga kaparian: Kabay nga magpabilin sila
nga matutom sa pangamuyo, kabay nga
selebrahon nila ang Santos nga Misa sing may
mainit pa gid nga debosyon; kabay nga ang ila
kabuhi pirme mangin pagpamati sa pulong sang
Dios kag kabay nga sa adlaw-adlaw nga tanan,
ila maangkon ang pareho nga balatyagon kag

Sa katapusan, kita ginatawag sa

Subong man, magdangop kita kay Maria, ang Iloy
sang Maayo nga Manugbantay. Kabay nga sia
handa sa pagsabat sa panawagan sang Dios dira
sa pagsiling “ yari ang alagad sang Ginuo,”
magbulig sa aton sa pagbaton sing may kalipay
kag sing may pagkabukas, sa pangagda ni Kristo

“Magpadala ka Ginuo sang Balaan nga mga

mga Volunteer Catechists sa Flores de Mayo diri
sa Parokya.
Sang naghatag sang feedbacks ang mga catechists
sang ila experience sa sulod sang 10 days nga
pagfacilitate sang Flores de Mayo, malipayon gid
sila sa pagshare sa ila fellow catechists nga nag
enjoy gid sila sa pagtudlo sa mga kabataan bisan
pa may mga salawayon. Nasadyahan gid ang mga
katekista kay madamo sang mga kabataan ang
naga-flores pareho abi sa Napnud Proper nga may
65 children, sa Sitio Paho nga may 41 children, sa
Cari Minor 45 children, sa Nabitasan nga may 50
children, Gua-an nga may 55 children, So-ol
Guihaman nga may 60 children, Sitio Pandan nga
may 40 children, Poblacion nga may 75 children,
Guihaman Proper nga may 35 children, Sitio
Irrigation Cagamutan Norte nga may 30 children,
Bliss Cari Mayor nga may 35 children, Brgy San
Vicente nga may apat ka area ang ila flores na may
total nga 275 children, Buntatala nga may 50
children, Lapayon nga may total nga 124 children,
Guinobatan nga may 20 children, Cagamutan Sur
nga may 30 children sa kabilugan kag madamo pa
nga mga Chapels nga wala pa makahatag data.
Sa sini nga kadamuon nga kabataan nga naga-
flores kung hapon, ginahagad gid ang mga
ginikanan sini kag ang tagsa ka mga binunyagan
nga mga Kristyano sa kabaranggayan sa paghatag
sang full support agud magiyahan sila padulong sa
maayo nga pagkabuhi sa bulig sang mga katekista
sa tagsa ka chappel sang aton parokya.
