RESUMO
Flocculation and sedimentation are processes commonly seen in small and large
industries, especially when it comes to the treatment of water and effluents. Flocculation
is a physical-chemical process in which the particles come together so that they can settle.
While sedimentation is a solid-liquid separation process that can start from flakes in some
solution, where the flakes, due to their size and weight, rest at the bottom of the container.
This work aims to determine the best flocculation condition through the jar test (jar test)
in which the best suitable pH could be found and used in discontinuous sedimentation (in
a beaker) and in the design of a continuous sedimenter. The revisions and the use of the
Roberts and Tamadge-Fitch methods were made, in which they present calculations and
graphs that can help in choosing the best container. A less concentrated clarified product
was obtained with pH 6.5 and NTU turbidity, subsequently directed to the batch
sedimentation module. The clarified and the sludge had solids concentrations equal to
0.002 and 0.122 g/cm3, respectively.
The suspension flow rate was calculated using the Tamadge-Fitch and Roberts
methods, with a 100% safety factor, of 1.780 and 1.520 L/min, respectively.
According to the study, it can be concluded that pH has an influence on the
coagulant activity of aluminum sulfate, the methods applied were partially adjusted to the
data of the experiment and the choice of the safety factor directly influences the
calculation of the feed flow.

𝑉𝑜𝑙𝑢𝑚𝑒 (8)
𝑆𝑚𝑖𝑛 =
𝐴𝑙𝑡𝑢𝑟𝑎
22000𝑐𝑚3 (9)
𝑆𝑚𝑖𝑛 = = 687,5𝑐𝑚2

𝑄𝐴 = 𝑐𝑚3 = 1786,59 𝑐𝑚3 /𝑚𝑖𝑛
364,7 3
60 𝑚𝑖𝑛 × 0,01 𝑔/𝑐𝑚
𝑄𝐴 = 1,78 𝐿/𝑚𝑖𝑛

𝑔
229,16 𝑐𝑚2 × 0,01 × 31,60 𝑐𝑚
𝑄𝐴 = 𝑐𝑚3 = 1191,03 𝑐𝑚3 /𝑚𝑖𝑛
364,8 3
60 𝑚𝑖𝑛 × 0,01 𝑔/𝑐𝑚
𝑄𝐴 = 1,19 𝐿/𝑚𝑖𝑛

𝑢𝑐 = 2,10 𝑐𝑚/𝑚𝑖𝑛

31,6 𝑐𝑚 ∗
𝐶𝑐 = 𝑐𝑚3
17,5𝑐𝑚
𝐶𝑐 = 0,018𝑔/𝑐𝑚3
𝑄𝐴 = 1,52 𝐿/𝑚𝑖𝑛
𝑄𝐴 = 1,02 𝐿/𝑚𝑖𝑛
