2011 Memorial Day Ceremony-
A Day of Remembrance

Memorial Day is the holiday held in the United States
of America in memory of the dead servicemen and service-
women of all wars. The largest ceremony held in our area
annually is always held the day before the date of the actual
holiday. This year’s ceremony will take place on Sunday, May
29th, at 2 p.m. at Fort Custer National Cemetery, 15501 Dick-
man Road, Augusta, Michigan. The ceremony is sponsored by
the Fort Custer National Cemetery Advisory Committee, Inc.
We encourage area residents of all ages to attend this stirring
patriotic event. Attending an hour-long event like this is a won-
derful way for young people to learn why they should take
pride in being an American.

A Message From Chairman Schostak
As Chairman of the Michigan Republican Party, I am
honored to have this chance to let you and your family mem-
bers know how much veterans and their loved ones mean to me
and to the organization I lead.
Michigan Republicans will always respect those who
have served our country in uniform, which we have done
throughout the history of our party.
Abraham Lincoln, one of America’s greatest presi-
dents, a Republican, said of the fallen at Gettysburg: “[W]e
take increased devotion to that cause for which they gave the
last full measure of devotion -- that we here highly resolve that
these dead shall not have died in vain -- that this nation, under
God, shall have a new birth of freedom -- and that government
of the people, by the people, for the people, shall not perish
from the earth.”
President Dwight David Eisenhower – already one of
America’s greatest war heroes – took it upon himself to fight
the menace of communism throughout the 1950s. And Presi-
dent George W. Bush, a member of the Texas Air National
Guard – made it clear that America would not back down to
terrorism and the evil fanatics who attacked our country on
9/11.
This newsletter reflects our belief that our men and
women in uniform deserve recognition for their sacrifice and
are owed the gratitude of a free nation.
Dear Republican Colleagues,
There are many hero's in life, you
have yours and I have mine. My hero is
a special family friend, Joe Johnson. Joe
died on June 16, 2010 while in combat
during his tour of duty in Afghanistan. He
gave his life for you, for me and for his
country.
I remember Lt. General
Helmick contributing at Joe's funeral, "Joe
was a rare breed who stepped forward
when most stepped back." His bravery was
undeniable. Joe's mother, Teri, shared with me, "our memories
of Joe have been made, there are no more memory making to-
morrow's, yet we take comfort that his memory lives on in eve-
ry tribute, and for that we are blessed." This is exactly why
I'm inviting you to share in the first Joe Johnson Memorial Golf
Outing on Saturday, May 21, 2011 at the Sugarbush Golf Club
in Davison, MI. Let's represent to this family that Republicans
are a party of humanitarians as we honor Joe Johnson. For

Korean War Actions Deadline for Retroactive Stop

WASHINGTON, April 13, 2011 – President Barack
Obama will award the Medal of Honor to two soldiers for
conspicuous gallantry nearly 60 years ago during the Korean
War, White House officials announced today.
Officials said Army Pfcs. Anthony T. Kaho’ohano-
hano and Henry Svehlawill will receive the nation’s highest
award for valor in combat posthumously in a May 2 White
House ceremony.
On Sept. 1, 1951, Kaho’ohanohano was in charge of
a machine-gun squad with Company H, 17th Infantry Regi-
ment, 7th Infantry Division. When faced by an enemy with
overwhelming numbers, he ordered his squad to take up more
defensible positions and provide covering fire for the with-
drawing friendly force.
He then gathered a supply of grenades and ammuni-
tion and returned to his original position to face the enemy
alone - delivering deadly accurate fire into the ranks of the
onrushing enemy. When his ammunition was depleted, he
engaged the enemy in hand-to-hand combat until he was
killed. His stand inspired his comrades to launch a counterat-
tack that completely repulsed the enemy, a White House
statement said.
Kaho’ohanohano's sister, Elaine Kaho’ohanohano,
and brother, Eugene Kaho’ohanohano, will join the president
at the Medal of Honor ceremony. Svehla was a rifleman with
Company F, 32d Infantry Regiment, 7th Infantry Division.
On June 12, 1952, his platoon came under heavy fire. With
his platoon’s attack beginning to falter, Svehla charged the
enemy positions, firing his weapon and throwing grenades as
he advanced. Disregarding his own safety, he destroyed ene-
my positions and inflicted heavy casualties. He died when he
threw himself on an enemy grenade that landed among a
group of his comrades.
Loss Special Pay Extended

The deadline for eligible
service members, veterans and their
beneficiaries to apply for Retroactive
Stop Loss Special Pay (RSLSP) has
been extended to Oct. 21, 2011,
allowing those eligible more time to
apply for the benefits they’ve earned
under the program guidelines.
The deadline extension is
included in Continuing Resolution
H.R. 1473, signed by President Obama April 15, 2011, provid-
ing funding for federal government operations through Oct. 21,
2011.
The RSLSP was established to compensate for the
hardships military members encountered when their service
was involuntarily extended under Stop Loss Authority between
Sept. 11, 2001, and Sept. 30, 2009. Eligible members or their
beneficiaries may submit a claim to their respective military
service in order to receive the benefit of $500 for each full or
partial month served in a Stop Loss status.
When RSLSP began on Oct. 21, 2009, the services
estimated 145,000 service members, veterans and beneficiaries
were eligible for this benefit. Because the majority of those
eligible had separated from the military, the services have
engaged in extensive and persistent outreach efforts over the
past 18 months. Outreach efforts including direct mail and
engaging military and veteran service organizations, social
networks and media outlets, will continue through Oct. 21,
2011.
