Foundation Focus by Christine Rocchio
The heavy morning rains on Saturday- April 16th were no match for the women of Beta Epsilon- American University
when it came to spreading the word and fundraising for Delta Gamma's mission of "Service for Sight." Although it was
necessary to move the event from the University's Main Quad to Bender Arena, under the direction of BE's VP: Foun-
dation- Tyler Tripp, participant's of the Walk for Vision Awareness were treated to a heartwarming, educational and
truly fun time while "doing good."
The event began with check in and registration while enjoying bagels donated by Panera Bread. Participants then had
the opportunity to visit informational booths set up by Columbia Lighthouse for the Blind and Reading for the Blind
& Dyslexic, while mingling with active service dogs, puppies in training and their owners from Guiding Eyes for the
Blind.
The crowd was then treated to a performance by AU's Women's A Capella singing group, whom many of the members
are Delta Gammas. They had the audience awed with the beauty of their voices and left them swaying and singing
along with their amazing arrangement of Katie Perry's "Firework."

Among the program's main highlights was guest speaker Moria Shea, accompanied by her guide dog- Owen. Moira
shared her inspirational experience of being visually impaired and how she came to know Delta Gamma while a stu-
dent at American University. She spoke of how she turned to a blind friend on campus for advice on how to continue
being as independent as possible when Usher Syndrome, a generic disorder that causes progressive blindness and hear-
ing loss, began effecting her studies and activities of daily living. He introduced her to the Delta Gammas on campus
who were helping him. And, the rest is history. Moira went on to graduate from AU and was an alumnae initiate to
Delta Gamma in 1995. Then in 1997, along with her guide dog at the time- Beau at her side, she went on to become
an activist for the rights of the disabled when the Senate initially barred her as an aide to Senator Ron Wyden (D-
Oregon) from bringing Beau onto the Senate floor to assist her. Moira concluded by sharing how much Delta Gamma
means to her and left the crowd extremely motivated to support the cause of "Service for Sight."

The Walk began following the conclusion of the main program and announcements. The mood was cheerful and ex-
tremely uplifting as collegians, alumnae, students, faculty, volunteers from the represented sight related organizations
and guide dogs happily walked numerous laps around the Bender Arena basketball court. While those not walking
were also able to contribute by making tactile coloring pages with puffy-paint to be used by visually impaired children.
Despite the weather playing against them, the Walk was definitely something the women of Beta Epsilon can be proud
of as they showed returning and local Alumnae, along with the entire AU Community how dedicated they are to
"doing good." They raised over $500 from the event and the sale of commemorative water bottles of which proceeds
are to be donated to the Delta Gamma Foundation and Columbia Lighthouse for the Blind's Annual Camp Light-
house for visually impaired children.

Greeting From Beta Epsilon
April Greetings from Beta Epsilon!!

This month Beta Epsilon has been busy wrapping everything up at the end of the school year.
On April 30, the BE has a BBQ with the alums at the American University Amphitheater.

At the end of March, Beta Epsilon met with Washington DC Alumnae at Clyde’s in Chinatown to celebrate Delta
Gamma’s Founders. BE had their Senior Installation ceremony and seniors were honored with awards.
After Founder’s Day, Beta Epsilon geared up for their long awaited 75th Anniversary on April 15-17th.

The weekend started out with a networking event on campus,

followed by a Vision Awareness Walk and Gala at the Ronald
Reagan Center on Saturday and formal chapter on Sunday.
Alumnae and Collegians gathered to celebrate Beta Epsilon at
all the events during the weekend.
