Surrounded by three towering volcanoes,
Agua, Fuego and Acatenango lies the pleas-
ant city of Antigua. Its majestic setting, cobble-
stone streets, crumbling ruins and sprays of
bougainvillea are charming. The buildings have
colonial style facades, tile roofs and vibrant col-
ors. Antigua is also dotted with interesting ru-
ins--Spanish churches, convents, and palaces
from the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries.
The best time to visit Antigua is dur-
ing Holy Week of Good Friday. It’s the busi-
est week of the year. Other busy times are
June through August and from November to
April. Antigua can get pretty cold between
September and March, so go prepared.
Two hundred years ago Antigua was a
center of power for the Spanish inhabitatns. To-
day it’s absolutely beautiful, with colorful Indian
markets, a wide range of restaurants, a dazzling
array of bars and nightclubs and more. Antigua
is a fascinating place to stay and learn Span-
ish. No matter what your tastes are, you will
always find something to do while not in class.

Our partner school (SA Antigua #1) is a well
run, small Spanish school located in Antigua.
Only 5 minutes walking from the city center, it’s
located in a nice colonial building complete with
a relaxing inner courtyard. Though relatively
new this school is quickly gaining a reputa-
tion as one of the best schools in Guatemala.
As a cultural symbol and attraction, not
only for the foreign tourist, but for natives as

studying either 4 or 6 lessons a day. Students and
teachers work on a one-on-one basis, allowing
each student to work at their individual level. The

ACCOMMODATIONS
Homestay. To truly immerse students in the
Guatemalan culture, the Spanish school care-
fully chooses the families with whom the stu-
dents will live. The families provide the stu-
dents with 3 meals a day, except on Sundays.
Living with a family also gives students the
opportunity to taste delicious home cooked
meals. You should expect as many as 5-7 other
students in the home. You will have a private

individuals in the home. The host families are
middle class by local standards, which is usu-
ally less than middle class in North America.

A large variety of traditional handicraft Antigua, Guatemala
products can be found in Antigua. A tradi-
tion parents have taught their children for
many generations. And so they have per-
fected this trade through the centuries creat-
ing woodworks, ceramics, scented candles,
leather purses and hand-woven textiles.
