History of SBI
 Origin of State bank of India may be traced back to Bank of Calcutta – established in 1806.
 Bank of Calcutta was renamed as Bank of Bengal in 1809
 Bank of Bengal alongwith Bank of Bombay (1840) and Bank of Madras (1843) were known as Pres-
idency banks
 Presidency Banks were authorised for conducting Govt Business and issuance of currency notes
 In 1921, these three Presidency banks were amalgamated to form Imperial Bank of India with al-
together 70 branches
 Till establishment of RBI in 1935, Imperial Bank of India was exclusively conducting Government
Business
 RBI was established on recommendations of Hilton Young Mission
 Thereafter, Imperial Bank of India started conducting Govt Business and Maintaining currency
chest & small coin depot as RBI’s agent
 On recommendations of All India Rural Credit Survey Committee and through passing of an Act in
parliament, Imperial Bank of India was renamed as State Bank of India on 1st July 1955

Associate Banks
 In 1959, State Bank of India (Subsidiary Banks) Act, 1959 was passed under which state associated
banks were taken over by the SBI as its subsidiaries
 Later on these were renamed as Associate Banks
 Presently, there are 5* Associate Banks of SBI namely
 State Bank of Bikaner & Jaipur (SBBJ)
 State Bank of Hyderabad (SBH)
 State Bank of Patiala (SBP)
 State Bank of Mysore (SBM)
 State Bank of Travancore (SBT)
 Erstwhile Associate Banks - State Bank of Saurashtra & State Bank of Indore have been merged
with State Bank of India
 SBI holds 100% shares in SBH & SBP. In SBBJ & SBT - 75% and in SBM- 92%

 It is a wholly owned banking subsidiary of SBI

Present Organisational Structure


 SBI’s Registered Office & Central Accounts Office is in Kolkata
 SBI’s Corporate Centre (Apex Office) is in Mumbai
 Corporate Centre is headed by Chairman
 Chairman is supported in his functioning by Managing Director & Chief Credit & Risk Officer (MD
& CCRO), Deputy Managing Director & Chief Financial Officer (DMD & CFO), Deputy Managing Di-
rector & Corporate Development Officer (DMD & CDO), DMD (Inspection & Management Audit),
DMD (Information Technology), Chief Vigilance Officer (CVO) and Chief Economic Advisor
 To achieve focused growth, undernoted Business Groups have been formed at Corporate Centre:
1. Corporate Banking Group
2. Mid Corporate Group
3. National Banking Group
4. Rural Business Group
5. Corporate Strategy & New Businesses
6. International Banking Group
7. Global Markets Department
8. Associates & Subsidiaries
 Each of these Business Groups are headed by Deputy Managing Director except the Group Asso-
ciates & Subsidiaries which is headed by Managing Director
 Corporate Banking Group consists of three Strategic Business Units viz., Corporate Accounts
Group, Project Finance & Leasing SBU and Stressed Assets Management Group

 Corporate Accounts Group has six branches at the following centres: Mumbai, New Delhi, Chen-
nai, Kolkata, Ahmedabad and Hyderabad
 Mid Corporate Group has 56 Branches
 Gold Banking Business comes under MCG
 National Banking Group comprises of Metro & Urban branches of 14 Circles
 NBG consists of three Strategic Business Units – SMEBU, PBBU and GBU for taking care of the re-
quirements of Small & Medium Enterprises, Personal Banking Segment and Government Business
 SBI has 14 Circles At Ahmedabad, Bangalore, Bengal, Bhubaneswar, Chandigarh, Chennai, Delhi,
Hyderabad, Kerala, Lucknow, Mumbai, North East & Patna.
 There is one Local Head Office at each Circle headed by Chief General Manager.
 Rural Business Group deals with the business of the Bank at all rural & semi urban centres
 New Business Lines/ Initiatives being pursued by Corporate Strategy & New Businesses are – Pri-
vate Equity, Financial Planning & Advisory Services (FP & AS), Mobile Banking, Custodial Services
and General Insurance
 Global Markets Department handles Bank’s Domestic Treasury Operations across all time zones
and covers activities in various markets i.e. Forex, Interest Rates, Bullion, Equity and Alternative
Assets, etc.

 Risk Management Committee of the Board is headed by - MD & CCRO
 Customer Service Committee of the Board is headed by - MD & CCRO
 Asset Liability Management Committee (ALCO) is headed by – DMD & CFO

New Organisational Changes


 Payment strategy group has been created at corporate centre headed by a CGM to capture the
growing business opportunities in Payment solutions segment & to increase our market share
from present level of 13% to at least 17%
 A new position of DGM (Operations) has been created at Circles controlling the 4 Metros i.e.
Mumbai, Delhi, Chennai & Kolkata to take care of non-credit CPCs
 A new position of DGM (FP& AS) has also been created at Circles controlling the 4 Metros i.e.
Mumbai, Delhi, Chennai & Kolkata to have a focused growth in Financial Planning & Advisory ser-
vices & Wealth Management
 Financial Institutions Business Unit has been created at Corporate Centre to bring Financial Insti-
tutions into our fold & to exploit the opportunities in the areas of Cash Management Product,
Trade Finance, Collection, Custodial & Treasury Management Services etc.
 Strategic Training Unit has been created headed by a CGM (L&D) to cater to ever increasing train-
ing needs of the Bank
