advertising, Newspaper publication is usually issued on daily or weekly basis, the main function
of which is to report news and other information in an up to date, and factual manner, many
newspapers also furnish special information to readers, such as weather reports, television
schedules. The provide commentary on politics, economics, arts and culture and sometimes

commercial advertising which is main source of revenue.

Present scenario is that by the time, they read newspaper, most people have already
learned about breaking news stories on television and internet. Readers rely on newspaper to
provide detailed background information and analysis, which television newscasts rarely offer.
Newspaper not only inform readers that an event happened but also help readers understand what
led up to the event and how it will affect the world around them. Newspapers as known today are
complete with advertising and a mixture of political, economic social news and commentary.

During the last decade business environment has become more challenging for daily
newspapers, they concentrated on both learning what their two customers groups readers and
advertisers want from newspaper, this has brought changes to the news making process, rather
than relying strict journalism, newsroom managers have encouraged reporters and editors to pay
more attention to perceived readers interests and shape content accordingly, this practice has
drawn praise and criticism.

Newspapers are clearly undergoing a renaissance through new products, new formats,
new titles, new editorial approaches, better distribution and better marketing. Competitive
landscape has now drastically changed with major publishers trying to expand initiating price
wars and marketing campaigns to win readers.

Production/Printing process of newspapers

There are 3 major starting points for the process;

Paper

The paper used in newspapers is thinner than writing paper. Paper thickness is
measured in gsm (grams per square meter).Typically they use 45gsm-55gsm.A4 writing
paper is about 100gsm. These arrive from suppliers as large reels from Andhra, Gujarat, and
Maharashtra. Reel weighs up to 1450kg. One reel can produce about 29,000 pages of the
newspaper.

Paper is a thin, flat material produced by the amalgamation of plant fibers, wood
pulp from pulpwood trees, largely softwoods such as spruce. Other vegetables fiber materials
including cotton, hem, and linen are used. Recycled paper is now days the most important
raw material for most packaging and newsprint grades.

Ink

Ink is crucial. There are different qualities of inks; but usually hydrophobic ink,
which do not mix with water, is used in offset printing press; they are delivered everyday
from suppliers from Kolkata and other places.

Usually four color combination is used for color printing. The colors are black,
cyan (blue), magenta (reddish) and yellow.

Plate

In order to get the image onto the paper we need aluminum plates. These have a special
polymer coating which allows the ink to stick to certain areas. Now day’s latest technology
CTP (Computer to Plate) is used by few organization

Bharatesh Education Trust’s Global Business School, Belgaum.

Tarun Bharat Daily Private Ltd, Belgaum.

The process starts with making the plates.

The first negatives of the newspaper page by computer are taken. These are then put in a
machine which has ultra violet light. The photo sensitive polymer on the plate absorbs the light
and images of the negatives are left on the plate. This process is now been largely super ceded by
a process called Computer to Plate (CTP).

Tarun Bharat uses this latest technology computer to plate (CTP).here the image is directly
impressed from computer onto the plate using laser.

When they are made, the plates are put on rotating cylinder alongside on the press or machine.

The route that the paper takes around the press is called the web. This decides how many pages
the paper is and where the color pages are going to be.

The plate cylinders then press the image of the page onto blanket cylinder, leaving a version of
the page’s image onto it.

When the press is ready to run, the ink is switched on and chemical reaction of ink which
contains oil and the squirting of jets of water into process result in actual newspaper page black
or colored images on white background and the cylinders on the press rotate very fast and print
the newspaper. Since oil and water do not mix, the areas where ink should adhere to the page are
black or colored, and water washes away the parts where ink is not needed. This is why this
printing process is referred to as “offset”.

The large sheet of printed newsprint move on to another large piece of machinery called folder.
There, pages are cut individually and folded in order. Then conveyer belt moves the paper and
they are arranged according to the requirement tied into bundles. The bundles are now ready to
be loaded onto vehicles for distribution.

Along with printing machine other machines like cutting, pinning, and glue binding
machines are used in the production process.
