Module Synopsis
This module involves the identification and analysis of rapid advances of Tourism in recent
years. It seeks to provide an international outlook and assessment of issues relating to the
development and growth of tourism worldwide. Approaches to the management of tourism flows
will be analyzed and an analysis of sustainable tourism initiatives undertaken. Various
approaches to the management of tourism will be analyzed and the role of the government will
be discussed with reference to the tourism policy of India. Formal assessment will comprise an
individual essay and final examination.
Outline Syllabus:
Students will become familiar with the various segments of the tourism industry, its scope, size,
seasonality and tourism demand. Students will learn about the impacts of tourism with respect
to social, cultural and environment and will become familiar with the sustainable tourism
initiatives undertaken by various organizations. The understanding of the tourism industry will
encourage students to explore the facets of the business in greater depth. Students will be
introduced to the models of tourism development and the role of government and tourism
organization with reference to tourism plans.

On successful completion of this module, students will be able to:
1. Understand the concepts and principles related to
sustainability in tourism and their application.
2. Understand and appreciate the multidisciplinary nature
of the study of tourism.
3. Understand the positive and negative impacts of
tourism and the basic principles of carrying capacity.
4. Compare and contrast the structure, frameworks,
emerging trends, issues and concerns in tourism.

Ability
On successful completion of this module student will be able to:
5. Appraise the different definitions of tourism.
6. Identify the main sources of tourist statistics and assess the reliability of data sources for
tourism.
7. Describe the positive and negative impacts of tourism and identify the ways in which the
negative impacts may be minimized by effective tourism planning.
8. Identify the challenges and problems that confront the development of the sector.

Assessment Strategy
3000 words essay
Three hour written examination

Assessment Weightings
Essay (30%) covering Learning outcome 1, 3, 7.
Examination (70%) covering Learning outcome 2, 4, 5, 6, 8.

Learning Strategy
Lectures will develop theoretical and conceptual material. Seminars will be used to allow
students to develop the material and consider case studies related to various organizations
within the travel and tourism sector.

The environment, whether it is natural or artificial, is the most fundamental ingredient of the
tourism product. However, as soon as tourism activity takes place, the environment is inevitably
changed or modified either to facilitate tourism or through the tourism production process.”

Discuss:

The essay should contain an analysis of the environmental impacts which tourism may have at
the destination as well as an assessment of the claim being made. You have to give specific
examples to support your views.
