About This Program

Leading the Way to Academic Dentistry

To prepare for success as faculty in the most competitive environments, future

academicians need the skills to balance the often competing and sometimes
overwhelming demands of a tenure-track faculty position. They need to be and to feel
prepared to teach, to conduct research, and to serve in leadership positions in their
schools, communities, and professional organizations.

Teaching Apprenticeship

“Teaching well is more fun than teaching poorly.”

-- McKeachie (1994)

Teaching apprenticeships for future academic dentists provide hands-on experience in

didactic, fine motor, and clinical instruction, as well as familiarity with the educational
research that informs effective pedagogy. The Basic Dental Principles (BDP) course is an
innovative program in which dental students prepare and present lectures and teach basic
fine motor skills to pre-dental students. Approximately 100 pre-dental students enroll
each year in this two quarter course that is offered during the winter and spring quarters.

Mentorship Training

The mentoring seminar offers a model of doctoral preparation for a faculty career by
including preparation for teaching and academic citizenship as well as for research. The
mentorship training seminar addresses and practices specific topics known to create
effective mentoring relationships. The experience teaching the section of pre-dental
students will serve as the “laboratory” for the mentoring discussions.

Leadership Training

Communication, organizational, and leadership skills are critical for success in an

academic career. Academicians need to be able to present their ideas clearly, work
effectively with various personalities, manage their time amid conflicting demands, plan
their short and long-term career paths, and assume leadership roles in the dental and
healthcare professions. Experiences in presenting their research, working collegially, and
setting and evaluating professional goals also need to be part of the preparation of
tomorrow’s dental faculty.

Participants will apply for the Dean’s Leadership Institute under the mentorship of Dean
No-Hee Park and Associate Dean Ronald Mito, which serves to cultivate, energize, and
prepare future leaders in academics, community service, professional organizations, and
business. A ten-week Resident Leadership Institute is also available, covering topics in
assessment of personal aptitude/personality typology, leadership styles, understanding
people/motivational leadership, developing a strategic plan, developing a career
development plan, academic career opportunities, and selecting a training environment.

Research Training

Research training is more than finding a lab, conducting experiments and writing reports.
Successful researchers are skilled communicators and effective mentors. Because the
school has an active T32 training grant with many faculty members conducting funded
research, students and residents have numerous opportunities to participate in basic
science, behavioral, clinical, and translational research under the guidance of an
experienced mentor. The mutually supportive relationship between the R25 and T32
grants provides students with opportunities for close collaboration and cross-training
between the programs.
