Security is the most important thing for buyers of residential apartments in England.
With more and more people living alone and the breakdown of the traditional
community spirit, it is not surprising that security is now so essential. Access through
guarded security gates, videophone entry systems and underground parking, all make
people feel safe in their homes.
Those recently retired make up a large proportion of these apartment buyers. They
often sell their large homes and move into these apartments to release cash for other
essential needs. They tend to leave their property empty for longer periods of time
while visiting their children or travelling abroad for holidays because they believe that
they can ‘lock up and leave’ their property safely. They also feel attracted to more
manageable property with less maintenance.

Most of the British people miss sunshine and hot weather. They like to spend their
winter holidays in warmer climates. For those who like to combine sun, sand and
shopping, Dubai can offer all three. For instance, it can provide them with a chance
to camp in a desert on Christmas day as an alternative to their usual cold and dull
Christmas morning at home. They can also pick up designer bargains without getting
caught in the rush of the sale season in the malls of Doha in nearby Qatar. Those
who don’t want to miss out on their winter sports can try the huge indoor ski slope in
Dubai.

x All candidates must receive the same treatment. Examiners must mark the first
candidate in exactly the same way as they mark the last.
x Mark schemes should be applied positively. Candidates must be rewarded for
what they have shown they can do rather than penalised for omissions.
x Examiners should mark according to the mark scheme not according to their
perception of where the grade boundaries may lie.
x There is no ceiling on achievement. All marks on the mark scheme should be used
appropriately.
x All the marks on the mark scheme are designed to be awarded. Examiners should
always award full marks if deserved, i.e. if the answer matches the mark scheme.
Examiners should also be prepared to award zero marks if the candidate’s
response is not worthy of credit according to the mark scheme.
x Where some judgement is required, mark schemes will provide the principles by
which marks will be awarded and exemplification may be limited.
x When examiners are in doubt regarding the application of the mark scheme to a
candidate’s response, the team leader must be consulted.
x Crossed out work should be marked UNLESS the candidate has replaced it with an
alternative response.
