IFSSO Executive Board Convenes in Bali, Indonesia

IFSSO Executive Board meeting in Bali, Indonesia
FEATURES
The newly-elected Executive Board of the International
Federation of Social Science Organizations (IFSSO) held its
first official meeting last May 1-2, 2010 at Puri Dalem Hotel
in Sanur, Bali, Indonesia. Attending the meeting were IFSSO
President Teruyuki Komatsu, Second Vice President I Ketut
Ardhana, Secretary General Nestor Castro, Leon Ramos, and
Kanchana Pankhoyngam, representing the First Vice
Presidency which is held by the National Research Council
of Thailand (NRCT). This is the first meeting of the IFSSO
Executive Board since they were elected during the General
Assembly of the organization last November 23, 2009 in
Chiang Mai, Thailand. Also present during the meeting were
Choori Keedumrongkool and Kloyjai Samretwanich of
NRCT, Arthur Seeha-Umpai of IFSSO Thailand, and Joseph
Lalo of the IFSSO Secretariat.

IFSSO Officials Attend 10th Science Council of Asia Conference

attended the 10th Science Council of Asia (SCA) Conference which was held at Sofitel Philippine Plaza Hotel in

Budapest Business School Joins IFSSO
IFSSO welcomes the Budapest Business School as its newest associate member
organization. The Budapest Business School officially joined IFSSO last June 16,
2010. Dr. Hidasi Judit, Professor of Communication and Dean of the Faculty of
International Management and Business Institute of Social Sciences, is the official
representative of the School to IFSSO. Dr. Hidasi was able to attend the IFSSO
General Conference in Chiang Mai, Thailand last November 22-23, 2009 where she
presented a paper on “Current Issues on Migration and Multiculturalism in Europe”.
She also participated in the IFSSO General Assembly which was held immediately
after the conference.
The Budapest Business School is the first member organization of IFSSO in Hungary.

ISSC to Hold 28th General Assembly in Nagoya

The International Social Science Council (ISSC) will hold its 28th General Assembly in Nagoya, Japan on
December 10-12, 2010. The General Assembly will be attended by member and associate member organizations
of ISSC. IFSSO has been a member of ISSC since 1979.
Among the items of the ISSC General Assembly agenda are: discussion on key activities of the Council,
including the 2012 World Social Science Forum; the 2010 and 2013 Social Science Reports; the World Social

World SSH Net to Hold Conference in Buenos Aires
The World Social Sciences and Humanities Network (World SSH Net) will convene a conference in Buenos
Aires, Argentina on October 28-30, 2010. The theme of the conference is “Cultural elements in Social Sciences

The Executive Board made
important decisions pertaining to the
next IFSSO General Conference, on
financial concerns of the
organization, and on membership
recruitment and revitalization. The
Executive Board accepted the bid
of the Lyceum of the Philippines
University (LPU), an associate
member organization of IFSSO, to
host the said conference at its
Batangas City campus. The LPU
has a 1,000-capacity air-conditioned
auditorium and an international
dormitory at its Lyceum
International Maritime Academy.
The Conference will be held in
November 2011 with the theme
“Social Science Perspectives on
Human Security”. Three sub-
themes were also identified, namely:
? Health and Ageing;
? Natural and Man-made
Disasters; and
? Wealth of Tradition and
Cultural Transformation.
The Executive Board resolved to
give an award of USD 300 each to
ISSC to Hold 28th General Assembly

Science Fellows Programme; the
ISSC’s international programs and
knowledge networks; and its
science policy development and
support work.
A two-day joint scientific
symposium of the ISSC and the
International Council for
Philosophy and Humanistic Studies
(CIPSH) will be convened after the
ISSC General Assembly. The
symposium’s topic is “Changing
Nature – Changing Sciences? The
Challenges of Global
Environmental Change Research
for the Social Sciences and
Humanities.”
All Presidents, Secretaries-
General, and Directors of ISSC
member and associate member
organizations are invited to attend
the ISSC General Assembly.

Regarding financial issues, the
Executive Board affirmed the
decision of the November 2009
General Assembly to peg IFSSO’s
annual membership fee to USD 500
for full member organizations, USD
200 for associate member
organizations, and USD 50 for
individual members regardless of
country or region.
On membership recruitment and
revitalization, the Executive Board
instructed the IFSSO Secretariat to
update the IFSSO website and to
reproduce more brochures that will
help popularize the organization.
The publication of the quarterly
IFSSO Newsletter and an annual
journal are also expected to
contribute to organizational
strengthening and expansion.
The next IFSSO Executive Board
meeting will be held in Manila,
Philippines in the middle of 2011.

Various scientific and academic
papers will be presented in the
conference, including three papers
from IFSSO officers. Dr. Nestor
Castro, IFSSO Secretary General,
will present a paper entitled “Clash
of Cultures: Teaching Social
Sciences in the Philippines.” Dr.
Yekti Maunati, IFSSO Treasurer,
will read a paper on “Construction
of Identity: Multiple Notions of
Representations, from Western
Power to Local Representation.” Dr.
I Ketut Ardhana, IFSSO Second
Vice President, will present his paper
on “Local Culture, Cultural
Standards, Collaboration Studies
and Collaboration in the Context of
Global Social Sciences: Southeast
Asian Experiences.”

the Asia Pacific Region: Responding
through an Integrated and
Multidisciplinary Approach in
Science and Technology.”
Also attending the conference
were representatives from other
IFSSO member organizations,
namely the Science Council of Japan
(SCJ), the Lembaga Ilmu
Pengetahuan Indonesia (LIPI), the
National Research Council of the
Philippines (NRCP) and the Indian
Council of Social Science Research
(ICSSR). Dr. Castro took the
opportunity to meet SCJ President
Ichiro Kanazawa and NRCP
President Alvin Culaba who were
among the key officials of the
conference. He gave the two
officials copies of the IFSSO
Newsletter and vowed to work for
greater cooperation between IFSSO
and the said organizations.
The next SCA Conference will be
held in Ulan Bator, Mongolia in 2011.

The World SSH Net is also
planning to collaborate with IFSSO
in holding a regional workshop for
Southeast Asia in December 2011.
The IFSSO Executive Board, during
its May 1-2, 2010 meeting in Bali,
resolved to encourage its member
organizations to attend next year’s
World SSH Net workshop in Bali,
Indonesia.
