CMPE 466- Computer Networks –Project (12%)

Project description
Assume that you are responsible for the design and implementation of a LAN for a company
named XYZ. Suppose that the company is composed of four buildings numbered: bldg 1, bldg
2, bldg 3, and bldg 4. The block diagram below illustrates the location of each building and the
distances between them. Each building has five floors, and each floor is supposed to have up to
16 computers connected to the LAN and each building is supposed to be in different LAN.
You have obtained an IP address range 172.16.0.0 /16 for the company. It will require to be
sub-netted to allow for the functions of different buildings/floors.

Bldg 1 Bldg 2

80 M

Bldg 4 Bldg 3

100 M

Requirements:-
Write a technical report to include the following:-
1. A logical topology of the entire network showing switches, routers and any other
networking hardware. You may use Visio or any other design application to
provide the topology diagram of an optimal design (in terms of both
performance and cost) for the above LAN?
2. Detailing the cabling that you have chosen to install, you must show the location
clearly on one of the floor . You must explain how the cabling will be run and
choose the appropriate type.
3. An IP addressing scheme for the company. This will involve sub-netting the
given IP address range suitably and deciding on which ranges of addresses will
be reserved for servers and which for desktop PCs.
4. Configuration steps to configure routers in each building to establish
connectivity between all buildings(using RIP routing protocol).

5. Configuration steps to configure and creates a virtual LAN in each floor in each
building to allow connectivity between all floors in the same building only.
6. Configuration steps to Configure the router in bldg4 to block all traffic from
bldg1.
7. If this network is to be connected to the Internet, what requirements (hardware &
software) and setup are needed to accomplish such connection(configuration
should be included)? Assume that the network has to be given a Domain Name
XYZ.COM, both e-mail service and Web Site are required, the contract with the
ISP will give the company 32 IP numbers that are: 163.121.70.0 to
163.121.70.31, and the external connection to the ISP is 512 kbps digital
(ADSL).
8. A brief justification for your network. The justification will explain why you
have made the choices of certain software, hardware or infrastructures.

Important Notes
 Two students can work in each group.
 The project and report carries 12 marks.
 Material should be collected from at least three different sources.
 You may use books, periodicals, and the Internet as sources of information.
Every used source should be indicated in the text of the report and listed in the
list of references.
 You should include in the report a section of conclusions and discussions to
highlight your opinion regarding the technologies investigated and documented
in your report. Also, to demonstrate your opinion about the facts investigated
and the results obtained.
 A Report must be submitted at the last week before the final exam.
 You have to demonstrate your work in the lab using packet tracer or any other
simulation software.
