Dear Person’s name,

อาบน้้าร้อนมาก่อน – Thai proverb that means, “To have more experience than others.”
I am applying for the English teaching position at school. My enthusiasm for English coupled with my classroom
management skills and my prior teaching experiences make me an outstanding candidate for a position at your
institution.

I have had a lifelong passion for reading, writing, and literature, and I bring that enthusiasm into the classroom. I
encourage students to work cooperatively and share their writing during structured peer response. Students are also
encouraged to be creative during writing exercises while paying attention to standards and requirements.
Furthermore, since teaching English includes an emphasis on speaking and listening, I often stimulate interest by
relating the subject matter to popular songs and movies to get the students actively involved in the material.

I developed my classroom management skills through various work experiences and while studying at Northern
Michigan University. I work hard to help students learn to be responsible and develop skills that will ensure their
success – both presently and throughout life. I emphasize the use of positive reinforcement to reward students for
on-task behavior. A teacher should facilitate the learning process, ultimately striving to help students become
lifelong learners. I accomplish this by emphasizing trust and respect in the classroom.

Working as a United States Peace Corps volunteer in Thailand has been the most character building experience of
my life. Adjusting to Thai culture and speaking Thai are rewarding, but teaching in a cross-cultural environment
with my Thai counterparts is the most gratifying part of my service. We have spent our time together lesson
planning, co-teaching, creating materials, attending conferences, and working on projects. It is encouraging to see a
marked improvement in their English language abilities and instruction. I have also worked extensively with Thai
youth in the areas of leadership and health promotion by chaperoning field trips, organizing after school activities,
and developing and managing conferences.

My style of instruction is influenced by my experiences not only in Thailand but during my previous work in the
United States and New Zealand as well. I knew early on, from the leadership roles I played in high school, that I
was a teacher. I bring a young, modern, worldly outlook to the classroom that various individuals can relate to and
have mentored all types of students from “at-risk” to college bound. I am fortunate to have had the opportunity to
live and work in many different countries, institutions, and educational systems. These experiences have helped
form the core values that are reflected in my teaching.

I believe I would make an excellent candidate for the English teacher position within your school. My references
are available at your request and I am available via telephone at (+66) 084-310-6288 or by email at
anbarnes@alumni.nmu.edu. I look forward to hearing from you at your earliest convenience. Thank you for taking
the time to consider my application.

Kind regards,

Anthony Barnes
