The main thesis of the reading is related to the transformation of China and its relation in the
global world. The world and China itself is seeing this whirlwind of construction. A new China is
emerging and all the sparkling and glowing sky-scrapers, new technologies are the symbol of
new China. Its resource research and expedition with all the trade challenges is in limelight.
China is transforming itself at an astounding rate.

The author in the introduction of the chapter ͞China and the World͟ in ͞China Rises͟ elucidates
the growing capability and interest of China in the world. The whole culmination of China and
its place in the world has got the West observers excited and delighted. China͛s appearance in
the media has also increased for the past few years. Countless new books, articles and
magazines, and documentaries have come up showing increasing frequency of new China in the
media. The statistics are causing great astonishment. Chinese people are moving from rural
interior into booming coastal cities which is so far the biggest human migration in the history of
the world. China is the world͛s largest producer of coal, steel and cement. It is the second
largest consumer of energy and third largest importer of oil, which shows its interest in African
countries. No developing nation, has ever matched the amount of foreign investment that has
come China͛s way in the last twenty years. Also no other nation has such a huge labor force to
use such dramatic effect. China was the world͛s most advanced civilization at the time when
Europe was in dark ages. Though its development was lagging behind for five hundred years but
now all that is changing fast. Author believes that China could dominate the world in twenty-
first century overtaking the USA as the next superpower.

As more and more people are getting excited about China, business experts and intellectuals
show excessive pleasure at the massive opportunities offered by the Chinese market. China͛s
economic growth is 10 percent per year ant the country͛s city construction is also booming.
With all this the investment opportunities look huge and financially reliable. Whereas, the
political thinkers observe that how much China͛s totalitarian communist government has
opened the country to market economies and individual aspirations. They believe that as more
economic freedom is gained by Chinese people, the pressure for political freedom and
democracy will be unavoidable. Some political thinkers predict that in next decade China may
become partially democratic.
Author has used inductive methodology to support his argument. There is indication of usage of
both secondary and primary data. Primary data is used in the form of observation methods as
author has critically analyzed the China͛s growing economy.

According to author͛s analyses, China is seen as a threat to the West especially USA. Here a
negative perspective is shown. As China rises the western world will be drenched and
submerged by China͛s economic power. With its goods like textiles China is ruling the global
market. Western businesses are able to compete with the very few low-cost manufacturing
industries of China. So the western economy is under threat if China moves into services as it
seem to. He has critised that China͛s economy is like a bubble which is based on massive loans,
investments and expectations. Sooner or later it will burst and if it does, it will decline the world
into global depression worse than that of 1930͛s.The reason behind the collapse of China͛s
economic bubble is that China is country with massive population not a big profitable market.
Further he states that Americans are frightened of China. They argue that it͛s a great threat to
world peace as it a nuclear power having world͛s largest standing army which is rising 10
percent per year. All development and prosperity made by China is giving it all the ways to
expand. With all this the author points out the challenges China might face in the future. That is
the widening gap between rich and poor, unemployment by China͛s abandonment of welfare
and the domestic, environmental problems which are increasing.

Author assumes that China͛s future has to become increasingly capitalist and democratic in
nature if it has to keep growing its economic power. As the Chinese people keep on acquiring
the taste of prosperity the drive towards democracy will be unstoppable. This is because the
key to economic progress and prosperity lies in the political freedom and capitalist reforms
which Chinese people are adopting.

Further the author observes that after focusing and pursuing the goal of economic
development and prosperity, China is now extending its arms towards African countries. China
like superpowers is trying to ensure its access to energy resources. African countries are rich in
resources. China is adopting cooperative policies towards them. Chinese are winning many
African hearts and minds. China has doubled the aid to Africa and provided billions in loans and
credits. It is Africa͛s leading trade partner leaving behind USA. China also focused on two
thousand trade deals with Africa. The intention of China behind all this is the need for resources
to continue its economic growth. Their main focus is on oil resources from Sudan, Angola,
Gabon and Nigeria. With all this they are also interested in platinum from Zimbabwe, copper
from Zambia, tropical timber from Congo-Brazzaville and iron ore from South Africa.
China is pledging billions of dollars of investment in Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Venezuela, Bolivia
and Cuba. China͛s oil consumption is rising increasingly. It is the world͛s second largest oil
consumer after USA. China is in oil war with USA as it is its potential competitor. China will
overtake the USA in 209 years even though USA͛s consumption is still increasing. China is
developing closer ties with African countries but at the same time it has kept its business
separate from politics. It doesn͛t involve internal politics and has a policy of not interfering in
other states internal matters. China is expanding its friendship circle by moving towards south
East Asian and centralAsian countries for resources which is an economic hub. China is also
establishing links all over the world including India, Japan then Australia and so on.

China describes its ͚peaceful Rise͛ as its intention of keeping its prosperity and interest growing
to lift its people out of poverty. Deng Xiaoping advised that china should not threaten nor
interfere in its neighboring countries and should not disturb world peace. Like in the case of
Tibet and Taiwan, China seemed to keep it to itself. China was also against foreign invasion in
Iraq and Afghanistan. This shows that China is committed to its goal of economic development.
And it is evident from its policies that it is following the policy of peaceful rise.

The main challenger and competitor of China is USA.This is because China has the potential to
challenge USA͛s hegemony and establish its own supremacy and status. One area of potential
conflict is trade and finance. The USA has a massive and biggest trade imbalance with China. in
2005 USA imported US$240 billion of goods from China and exported back just US$40 billion
only. In the near future trading deficit is likely to increase and the reason behind the
sustainability is that China is willing putting its entire surplus into dollars. But many Americans
are unhappy of this surplus because they think American market is collapsing due to cheap
Chinese products.

The minor argument presented by the author is that with the growth of economic power, China
is also developing its military capability. The reason behind this might be that it wants to secure
itself from any threat that is simply defensive security. China͛s military spending has tripled and
is accelerating day by day.in 2006 Chinese spending on arms grew by 15 percent. Author
contradicts that as China insists it is rising peacefully, why it needs to build up its arms. Author
finally concludes his argument by stating that China͛s rise may move towards democracy
slowly. As 87 percent of Chinese people think their country should play a greater role in world
affairs and should soon match that of USA.
The article will be placed under the analytical section of my research in which I will critically
evaluate the factors contributing towards china as growing power. Some parts of it will also fall
under the conclusion section. All the information and facts provided are relevant to my work as
my study is on China the next economic superpower. This will help me analyze China͛s relation
with the world and its economic interests residing there.
