Aimetis Symphony™ is a software product designed to analyze, manage and record video. This Release 
Notes document contains new features, limitations, caveats, security fixes, and general release 
information.

What's New in Aimetis Symphony 6.2  
Architecture Changes 

• Servers are no longer licensed. Farms are licensed. Each Farm contains 1 or more servers where 
a database is shared centrally. The database can reside directly on the first server (master) or on 
another PC. 

• All configuration is now stored in a database.  Previous settings were stored both in the file 
system and the database. The default database is Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Express; however 
Microsoft SQL Server 2005 running on another server is supported. 

• The license file now contains multiple MACs as the Farm shares the same license file. This 
facilitates fail‐over scenarios where cameras need to be dynamically moved to another 
(redundant) server in the farm. 

Other Key Features 

• Multiple events can be combined in one Rule per camera (i.e. item removed and person 
loitering combined within a time range creates an alarm) 

• Search supports scenarios where Video Engine not previously enabled 

• Various improvements to Reports (include Dwell Time in Alarm Log report, Alarm Log report 
includes alarm snapshot, etc) 
 • Improvements to Camera Tree where camera groups independent of servers can be created 

• Video Wall functionality added 

• New Multiview screenshot feature, whereby all images in the multiview are copied to clipboard 

• User access to Rules has been added as a server side feature. Users may have access to cameras 
but elect not to receive alarms for certain Rules on cameras. 

• The license files are no longer automatically downloaded by the server from the Aimetis Xnet. A 
manual license refresh is now required for security reasons. 

• User access to export video is now gated  

• Meta‐data can now be stored longer than video 

• Unicode support has been added to a lot of functionality 

• Importing and exporting cameras from a CSV text file 

• Encrypted communication from client to server 

• ActiveDirectory authentication no longer stores user permissions in AD, so adding a custom 
attribute to the AD server isn't required.

Installation Notes 
Installing on a Computer without a previous installation of Symphony  

When installing Symphony for the first time in a new Farm, a database location is required. Symphony 
uses the SA account to connect to the SQL database, however a customer SA account password can now 
be defined.  The next server (child) will use the master (or external) database directly. Database 
synchronization is therefore no longer required. External databases can be clustered for redundancy.  

Adding Child Servers to the Farm 

Before adding a child server, configuration changes on the master server database are necessary, and a 
new license needs to be downloaded and applied to the master server. 

Database Configuration 

By default SQL 2005 express does not allow external connections. Before installing the Child 
server, perform the following on the Master server SQL 2005 express database:  

1. Click Start‐>Microsoft SQL Server 2005‐>Configuration Tools‐>SQL Server Configuration 
Manager 

2. Under SQL Server 2005 Network Configuration, select Protocols for AIMETIS (if you are 
using a different named instance, chose the protocols for that named instance.) 

3. Right click on Named Pipes and click enabled. Click OK on the dialog that pops up to 
warn you that you will need to restart the SQL Server service. 

4. Right click on TCP/IP and click enabled.  Click OK on the dialog that pops up to warn you 
that you will need to restart the SQL Server service. 

5. Under the SQL Server 2005 Services section, restart SQL Server (AIMETIS) (again use 
your named instance if it is something different). 
 6. Double click on the SQL Server Browser service.   

7. On the Service tab, change the Start Mode to Automatic. 

8. Click Apply. 

9. On the Log On tab click Start. 

10. Click OK. 

Note: These steps may not be necessary if an external database is used and incoming 
connections are already enabled.  

License Configuration 

Before installing the child server, the child server MAC needs to be added to the license of the 
master server. This is done by doing the following: 

1. Log into www.aimetis.com/xnet   

2. Click Servers link on the left navigation pane 

3. Click the server you wish to add a child server to 

4. Click Add Server to Farm 

5. Enter the MAC of the child server 

6. Refresh the license on the master server so the additional MAC(s) are included in the 
shared license file in the server farm 

7. Install child server and point to the database of the master server 

Installing on a Computer with a previous installation of Symphony  

Before proceeding, it is recommended that Symphony v6.1.19954 (Feb 27, 2009) is installed. Currently 
all settings except for rule mask information is successfully upgraded when upgrading a stand‐alone 
server Farm (with one Master server). Merging servers is currently unsupported in 6.2 (where two or 
more master servers in 6.1x will have a merged database). However installing v6.1.19954 and then using 
the merge farm tool is supported. Merging the farms before installing 6.2 is recommended until the 6.2 
merge tool is released. Before any merging of master servers is executed, a backup of all server 
configurations is highly recommended.  

Online and Offline installations 

Offline installation, where the license key is downloaded from www.aimetis.com/xnet is not currently 
supported. The Master server must have internet connectivity to finish the installation / activation 
process. This issue will be resolved shortly. 
Known Issues 
The following issues are known to occur in Symphony 6.2.20100. 

• Farm merging is not supported in 6.2. 
Workaround: Merge the farm in 6.1 before upgrading to 6.2 

• When uninstalling the software on a child server, it is possible to unintentionally remove the 
database schema on the master server if “do not save settings” is selected 

• If server failover is initiated, video is not automatically restored in the client 
Workaround: Close and open the client 

• Timeout issue in saving more than 50 camera configurations at once 

• Alarm log does not show lost camera connection alarms 

• You may be prompted several times for the database password during installation.  Just enter 
the same password again. 

Resolved Issues 
This section provides the details of the issues resolved in various versions of Symphony. 

• Log files automatically roll over at 2MB 

• Issue where windows default sound plays for Rules despite no sound file selected 

• Alarm sounds for Rules where cameras are not selected by user 

• Hardware alarm inputs not working reliably 

• Alarm acknowledgement time was blank
