Data Center Thermal Assessment (DCTA)

Case Study: Problem Statement

. To study the Effectiveness of Cooling System
in the Data Center .
. To improve the efficiency of the Data Center.

Approach
. Establish the Flow-field and Thermal-interactions
through CFD Simulations
. Identify the regions of By-pass, Re-circulation &
Hot-spots
. Optimize the Containment-strategy for both Hot
and Cold Aisles through multiple CFD Iterations.
. Obtain the most efficient Cooling System for the
Data Center

Model Geometry
Model Details

1. This case study involves a Data Center of System Geometry

8 Servers-racks in 4 x 4m room.

2. Each Server-rack consists of 42U with CPUs, memory

and motherboard components of known Heat Dissipation
Rate.

3. Each Server has a set of fans of known flow-rate (CFM)

which would force air to flow within the System over
the surface of the components to provide cooling.
