learn of
truck
dangers
Cheshire West and Chester
Road Safety Unit is working
in partnership with DHL UK
Foundation to raise awareness
of the dangers faced by children
around trucks on local town and
city roads.
The Trucks and Child Safety
(TACs) initiative is aimed at
improving road safety in respect
of large goods vehicles and young
children.
Pupils from Rossmore Primary
School in Little Sutton, are the first
to benefit from the demonstration
this year, with advice given to the
children on the view the driver has
at both the front and rear of the vehicle; how the driver will not be able to hear anyone
shouting to alert them to dangers from the rear of the vehicle, due to the noise of the
engine; the dangers of retrieving balls or items that may have fallen underneath the
vehicles and the dangers of standing too close to the front of the vehicle.
A demonstration was also shown to the children to show what happens to a traffic
cone that is caught underneath the wheels of a slow moving HGV.
The children were given access to the cockpit of the truck to experience engine noise
and views from mirrors and blind spots on the vehicles.
Anna Geroni, Road Safety Manager at Cheshire West and Chester Council’s Road
Safety Unit, said: “At a time when more and more trucks are using local roads it is
imperative that we equip our children with the necessary skills to keep them safer on
the roads near to where they live..”

Base Motopark has launched its
volunteering programme with a
community clean-up event at New
Bridge Road in Ellesmere Port.
The team were joined by members of
the local community, council staff and
Police PCSOs to clean up the area,
which has been used as an illegal
off-road motorbike track for more than
20 years.
Volunteers spent the day helping to
clear the area of rubbish and waste
materials while local caterer Sean
Bartley was on site offering food and
