Dog mess campaign comes to Great Sutton

A campaign against dog fouling returned to Great Sutton with a roadshow in
Seacombe Park last month.
Council officers were on hand to give advice and issue free dog waste bags.
Many dog owners are responsible and collect and dispose of their dog’s mess, but
there are still owners who do not, leaving the streets, parks and countryside littered
with dog faeces.
Cheshire West and Chester Councillor Nicole Meardon, representing the Sutton
ward, said: “Dog fouling is one of the top complaints received by the Council. Dog
mess can be disposed of in any general litterbin but people aren’t aware of this.
“A large percentage of the public are unsure as to where they can bin their dog’s
mess - the simple message is any general litter bin.”

Rivacre Country Park is the venue for a summer evening orienteering event on
Tuesday 28th June, from 5.30pm. Come and try orienteering with courses suitable
for all fitness levels, all ages and all abilities. Family groups and experienced runners
welcome. Contact Jane Mockford on 01244 350 589 Registration from 5:30pm.

Children
learn of
truck
dangers
Cheshire West and Chester
Road Safety Unit is working
in partnership with DHL UK
Foundation to raise awareness
of the dangers faced by children
around trucks on local town and
city roads.
The Trucks and Child Safety
(TACs) initiative is aimed at
improving road safety in respect
of large goods vehicles and young
children.
Pupils from Rossmore Primary
School in Little Sutton, are the first
to benefit from the demonstration
this year, with advice given to the
children on the view the driver has
at both the front and rear of the vehicle; how the driver will not be able to hear anyone
shouting to alert them to dangers from the rear of the vehicle, due to the noise of the
engine; the dangers of retrieving balls or items that may have fallen underneath the
vehicles and the dangers of standing too close to the front of the vehicle.
A demonstration was also shown to the children to show what happens to a traffic
cone that is caught underneath the wheels of a slow moving HGV.
The children were given access to the cockpit of the truck to experience engine noise
and views from mirrors and blind spots on the vehicles.
Anna Geroni, Road Safety Manager at Cheshire West and Chester Council’s Road
Safety Unit, said: “At a time when more and more trucks are using local roads it is
imperative that we equip our children with the necessary skills to keep them safer on
the roads near to where they live..”

If you’ve ever complained that you’re too

busy to lose weight, you’re not alone. New
research by the UK’s favourite slimming
club Slimming World shows that more
than half of people believe lack of time is
the main reason for Britain’s obesity cri-
sis. And a quarter of those questioned say
they’d like to eat a healthier diet but are
too busy to make eating well a priority.
But a weight loss expert from South Wirral
says that losing weight and creating delicious,
healthy meals doesn’t have to be time-con-
suming. A new recipe book from Slimming
World that claims to help slimmers save time
and lose pounds shows just how quick and
easy healthy eating can be.
Julie Rafferty, who manages all of the
Slimming World groups in South Wirral,
says: “Nowadays people lead extremely
busy lives, juggling long working hours,
families, friends, housework and other
commitments. With so much going on
it’s easy to let something slip, and for lots
of people that’s cooking healthy meals

Praise for Prince’s Trust leaders

Since the first ever
Prince’s Trust course
run by Cheshire Fire
and Rescue Service was
completed 17 years ago,
over 2,300 young people
have, to date, benefited
from the input of Prince’s
Trust leaders at the
Service.
At a presentation evening
held at Fire Service
Headquarters in Winsford
recently, six of those
leaders were recognised
for their commitment and
professionalism when working with Cheshire’s young people.
Nick Evans, Youth Engagement Manager, Isobel Sykes and Ian Hegarty, all based at Service
headquarters, John Walkey who’s based at Ellesmere Port, Pete Jones who works out of
Crewe Fire Station and Lee Lappin who looks after the Halton area Prince’s Trust teams,
received commemorative pin badges from the Chair of Cheshire Fire Authority, David Topping.
Speaking at the event, Cllr Topping said: “Over the years the Prince’s Trust team has
embraced the changes brought about to meet the changing needs and challenges that the
young people bring, continuing to deliver courses to a very high standard. Between them,
the recipients of today’s recognition have been instrumental in the continuing success of the
Prince’s Trust programme in Cheshire.”
A large part of the Prince’s Trust course is involved with assisting the local community.
Since the Service began delivering the programme it is believed that around £200,000 has
been given in kind through volunteering and community projects, benefiting the elderly and
vulnerable in the community.
Cllr Topping added: “I wish the Prince’s Trust programme and all those who work to make it
such a success all the best for the future and I look forward to hearing of even more success
stories.”
