Sunday? The Alameda das Flores provides a mix of arts,
crafts fair, art workshops and musical performances, and
it is close to Avenida Paulista. The project was born in
2003 with the aim of improving the quality of life in the
city of São Paulo and encourages the preservation of

public space. The Alameda Rio Claro has become a space

that combines leisure and culture, with Coffee shops and
a Flower Market.

The Ramos de Azevedo office designed Mansão

das Rosas (The Roses Mansion) in 1930. The beautiful
house, today a reference in São Paulo’s life, was one of
the last buildings made in the Avenida Paulista coffee
barons era. On October 22nd of 1985, it was declared a
Historic Property. The Mansão das Rosas was reopened

on September 19th of 1995, looking to become a multi-
culture, computerized exhibitions area. Today, the
activities of the new space are mainly devoted to reading
and research.

Opened in 1982, the São Paulo Cultural centre was

originally created to house an extension of Mário de
Andrade’s Library, but after some adjustments became
one of the first multi-cultural places in the country. In
addition to having the Pinacoteca Municipal and the
multimedia archives, the Cultural Center also offers plays,

dance performances, art shows, debates and courses.

With an area of 46,500 square meters, it has libraries
which occupy an area greater than 9,000 square meters.

 Embú das Artes

The “Embú das Artes Cultural Center” offers the

free access to art, culture and knowledge to the general
public. The Cultural Center is situated in the historical
City Hall building. In it, there are three exhibition rooms
in addition to the “Cássio M’Boy Auditorium” with
capacity for 150 people, designated for lectures, concerts,

musical shows and plays. Inside the Ana Moysés Room
are assembled pieces of art from the Museum of Sacred
Art, known for its dance workshops, keyboard and flute
lessons, and for housing the Municipal Band. Located
in front of the Center, is the Embú das Artes Live tent, in
which local artists have built an extension of their ateliers
(workshops), allowing the audience to follow in real
time the work of painters, sculptors, potters and forgers
creative processes.

“The Luz” rail station was opened to the public in

1901. Sitting on 7,500 square meters of the Jardim da
Luz, it was built by the São Paulo Railway Company
with structures brought from England, copying the Big
Ben and Westminster Abbey. Estação da Luz shows the
importance and effects that the coffee industry - which

required enlarging the railway to distribute the product

from Jundiaí to Santos harbor – had, not only on the city,
but also on the State.

Founded in 1963, the USP Museum of Contemporary

Art has a collection of about eight thousand pieces –
among oils paintings, drawings, engravings, sculptures,
objects and conceptual works of artists from the twentieth
century, such as Picasso, Miró, Kandinsky, Henry Moore,
and Antonio Dias. Headquartered in the central campus

of the São Paulo University, besides its historic space in
the Ciccillo Matarazzo Pavilion, the MAC is also a research
center. The public also has access to various activities and
services such as optional subjects for graduation courses,
cultural extension courses, activities, workshops, guided

Founded in 1948 by entrepreneur Ciccillo Francisco

Matarazzo, the Museum of Modern Art (MAM) emerged
with art works that belonged to this time. Matarazzo’s
collection comprised works of renowned Brazilian and
foreign painters, as Anita Malfatti, Di Cavalcanti, Miró
and Picasso. Today, MAM harbors around five thousand

pieces, and it’s collection grows annually. Besides pieces

of modern art, the museum preserves, contemporary
works dated of 1950, from the post-war until the present
day. Candido Portinari, Tarsila do Amaral and Victor
Brecheret, all modernists, are listed next to contemporary
artists such as Leonilson, Leda Catunda, Rosangela Rennó,
Cildo Meirelles and Vik Muniz.

Most of the core of European art of the MASP are

French paintings. At the museum, people can admire
the four portraits of the daughter of Luiz XV, painted by
Nattier, or the Four Seasons allegories of Delacroix. In the
impressionist movement, we find several pieces by Renoir,
Manet, Monet, Cézanne and Degas. In post-Impressionists,

you can see several paintings by Van Gogh and Toulouse-
Lautrec.
One of the highlights of this museum is the complete
collection of sculptures by Edgar Degas. It is a bronze
collection, of 73 pieces, that can only be seen fully at
the MASP and in a few museums such as the New York
Metropolitan, or the D`Orsay Museum in Paris.
The MASP was created to be a dynamic museum,
with the profile of a cultural center. Therefore it frequently
shows temporary exhibitions in different spaces
offering the visitors variety. The temporary exhibitions
present a wide range of subjects and media. National
and international exhibitions of contemporary art,
photography, design and architecture exhibit during
the alternate years, providing the public broad array of
images.

The Latin America Memorial is a cultural complex

that was designed by architect Oscar Niemeyer and
occupies 84,480 square meters of Barra Funda, São Paulo.
Among the attractions in this public foundation, is the
space museum’s Pavilion of Creativity. It holds about
4000 pieces craft from Uruguay, Paraguay, Brazil, Chile,

Bolivia, Ecuador, Peru, Guatemala and Mexico. Another

area is the Marta Lab Gallery which organizes exhibitions
of contemporary art and anthologies of important Latin
American artists. Classical and popular music concerts,
theater, dance and films are also held in the Memorial, at
one of the largest amphitheaters in the State, the Simón
Bolívar Auditorium, with a capacity for 1,609 people.

The construction of 1933 is one of the most

representative project of Ramos de Azevedo with its
colored glasses from Russian artist Conrado Sorgenicht
Son. The place is ideal to find fruit out of season and
typical foreign spices. It is also a great option to admire
the neoclassical architecture style. The Municipal Market

has been through restoration of the facade, the stained
glass, its painting, and new facilities were built on the
underground, at the old Hall of Auctions (now Hall of
Events) and on the mezzanine, which will house eight
restaurants. It is the more traditional gourmet place in
São Paulo. The “Mercadão” provides a huge variety of
domestic and imported foods.

 Monumento à Independência

Created in 1921 by Ettore Ximenez, this work of art

uses 131 bronze sculpted pieces. The monument pays
tribute to Brazil’s independence from Portugal. It is home
to Capela Imperial (Imperial Chapel) with the crypt and
remains of the Emperor Dom Pedro I and of Princess
Leopoldina.

 Monumento as Bandeiras

Conceived by Victor Brechet, this monument pays

a tribute to the Portuguese explorers and to the native
indian guides, aside from other races represented in
the monument that took part in Bandeiras (exploration
expeditions), such as mamelucos (blend of white people
with the native indians) and black people, all together

With a collection of more than 400 pieces, the

Museum of Inventions helps inventors throughout
the country. To spread various Brazilian studies, the
museum searches in exhibitions and fairs in Brazil. The
presentations are illustrative, made by a clone of Santos
Dumont. In exhibition, there are inventions that can be

practical for everyday life and also the most eccentric

ones, showing how far imagination can go. Visitors can
see how an energy battery made from human breath
works, a vandalism and fire proof phone, a needle for the
visually impaired, a double umbrella; chop sticks with
springs, among others. Seeking to encourage children’s
creativity, the museum also has guided visits for schools
and colleges. So the kids can understand the scientific
thought behind each invention. School visits must be
scheduled.

Siciliano Romeo, president of the establishment,

suggested the idea of founding the Car Museum of São
Paulo. Starting with a small car collection of Siciliano’s,
the museum currently has about 60 vehicles. Among the
displayed models is a Diligence from 1890, a 1925 Rugby
(which was seen on a Brazilian soap opera), a 1937 Ford

(seen on the movie The Adventures Ra-Tim-Bum castle),
a 1909 Le Zebra (which belonged to Santos Dummond),
the 1911 Benz (which belonged to Cardinal Arco Verde),
carriages and vehicles of the 1910 to 1950 decades. There
are also motorbikes and bicycles on exhibition, and
photographic panels, and there is also a rotating platform,
where the cars are replaced every month.

The aim of this great museum is to investigate,

publicize and preserve Brazilian football as a cultural
event.
The museum looks at the historical and cultural
significance of football in Brazil through exhibitions,
educational and cultural activities and research. It shows

how football has been part of the daily life of the country
since the end of the nineteenth century.
Football - its numbers, rules, symbols, representations
and stories - is our main focus. We want to stimulate
critical reflection on aspects of society associated with
the sport; behavior, development of the athlete’s physical
preparation, vocabulary and religion, among others,
always intertwined with the history of football in the
country.

Built in 1895, this Renaissance style building unites

it’s greatness, to a collection that came, mainly from the
personal collection of Colonel Paulo Joaquim Sertório.
His natural history collection led to the foundation
of the Paulista Museum, located within the Park of
Independence. It preserves more than 125 thousand

items, such as indigenous objects, furniture, paintings,
tools and other instruments, many for personal use.
The pieces found in the museum‘s collection are meant
to show the life style and traditions especially in São
Paulo, since the late 500’s until 1950. The building also
houses two libraries and sections that deal with records
and iconographic documents, and also a conservation
and a restoration lab. During the visit, the design work
of Italian Ettore Ximenez in granite can be seen, with
ornamentations made in bronze - the statue in tribute to
crying, pain and sorrow. Underground are the remains of
D. Pedro I and his two wives.

 Obelisco

This monument, in honor of the fighters who took

part in the so-called 32 revolution, is divided into four big
panels in Italian mosaic. The drawings of the dome and
the crypt of the mausoleum were conceived by Galileo
Emendabili, and the subtitles were created by the poet
Guilherme de Almeida.

The College’s courtyard is the first milestone in São

Paulo’s city birth. The site located on top of a hill between
the rivers Tamanduateí and Anhangabaú, was chosen to
start natives’ catechization.
On January 25, 1554 they built a hut about 90
square meters covered by palm or “sapê” leaves or,

as described by Anchieta, 10 by 14 “craveiro” steps
(“craveiro” steps were a Portuguese linear measure) and
in it they held the mass to commemorate the birth of the
Jesuit College. In 1556 Father Afonso Brás, precursor of
Brazilian Architecture, expanded the original building,
which received eight cubicles to become the Jesuits’
residence. Fights between settlers and religious led to the
expulsion of Jesuits from the site in 1640, to where they
returned thirteen years later. During the second half of the
seventeenth century, the third building was constructed,
made of rammed earth.

Inaugurated in 1905, the State Pinacoteca was the first

art museum of the State of São Paulo. The collection has
about four thousand art works of national artists such as
Anita Malfati, and foreign ones like Bourdelle or Rodin,
who attracted 200 thousand visitors to the Pinacoteca in
1995, the largest audience ever to visit the museum since

On September 22, 2006 the Planetarium Orsini

Aristotle returned to work. Seven years passed, but it was
worth the wait as it returned with modern equipment.
The projector StarMaster made by the German company
Carl Zeiss, replaced the former Universarium III. With
it’s 44 projectors and other peripheral equipment, is

capable of projecting the sky seen from any point of the
solar system. Using a modern projection system (optical
fiber), all stars are reproduced with realistic color and
brightness.

orchestras of the world, the Sala São Paulo became reality

Prestes Station. Built in the Louis XVI style, marked by its
ornamental details.
Designed in 1925 - when the city, fueled by coffee and
the railroad, grew at an accelerated pace - the building
was only completed in 1938, when the urbanization of
São Paulo had been characterized by the presence of cars,
inhibiting the use of trams.

The Parque Tenente Siqueira Campos, known as the

Trianon Park, was inaugurated in April 1892 with the
opening of the Avenida Paulista in São Paulo. It was
designed by French landscaper Paul Villon. The name
Trianon came from a club which once stood in front of the
park where today stands the Museum of São Paulo. The
architect Ramos de Azevedo developed the project (1911-
1914), through the Lord of Duprat administration. It was
built in 1916 and demolished in 1957 being replaced by
the museum.
In 1924, the park was donated to the city hall, and in
1931, received its current name in honor of one of the
heroes of the Lieutenant Rebellion, Antônio de Siqueira
Campos.

The cornerstone was launched in 1913. The

inauguration was in 1954. But the Sé Cathedral won only
its final form in 2002, after a restoration to complete
the original project, adding fourteen towers, some
minor works and stained glass facade of the church. A
restoration work is still to be done; recover the body of 12
thousand pipes. The neo-Gothic building, with 111 meters
length, houses several curiosities that often escape to
the eye of the visitor. Despite the European style, the
cathedral has well Brazilian elements, such as stone
altars with green-yellow and columns decorated with
native animals and plants. The best way to know the Sé
Cathedral is by a guided visit, where you can see the crypt
of known bishops of São Paulo.
