In my 27 years at five asset management firms, I have never been as impressed a
s I have been at Capital Z with not only the technology that has been provided t
o me but with the great lengths Jerome Spinner has gone to help me with my techn
ology needs. Simply put he and his team are the best IT team I have come across
.

PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE
CAPITAL Z PARTNERS, NEW YORK, NY
1999 - Present
Chief Technology Officer
$4 billion international Venture Capital firm with offices in NY, London, Hong K
ong and San Francisco
*Company Moves:
o I started at Capital Z two months before the move to Thompson Street midtown.
Although the cost was over $2 million, (outrageous for this size move) and the c
ontracts had already been signed, I found that 50% of the work had not yet been
assigned. With only six weeks left and a very hostile vendor group, we were fac
ed with an additional move 2 weeks before to another floor at our Zurich headqua
rters downtown. I was able to reassign work and put the company on all new syste
ms within the 6-week timeframe. Three years ago we moved out of the midtown spac
e to Union Square. I was able to hire the vendors and pick the technology I felt
was appropriate for this size firm. The cost was under $300,000.
*LP Conferences:
o Annual conferences were held in San Diego, Telluride, Quebec and Las Vegas, wi
th over 50 users and 200 limited partners in attendance. I set up a remote offic
e at each location, whereby each user had access to their e-mail and files as we
ll as network printing capability. Users felt as if they were in the office.
*Investment Team Analyses:
o Developed a procedure to import data from our 12 portfolio companies, whereby
the investment team was able to analyze the data in DST. This enabled the firm t
o have critical risk analysis information about each of our investments. This sa
ved the firm approximately $600,000 by doing it in-house.
*Outsourced Database:
o Converted data from an old database and set up custom analyses that helped the
firm with their fundraising efforts. The NextRound, a deal tracking, fundraisin
g and back office support program, had over 200 customers. We were the only comp
any that was able to convert the data in-house. This saved the firm approximatel
y $350,000.
*Custom Built In-House Systems:
o We originally signed a contact with Analytx for $500,000 to provide the firm w
ith a capital call management system. I insisted on a clause in the contract whe
reby we would only be responsible for $35,000 if the firm could not implement th
e program for us in 6 months. They were unable to do so; therefore, I developed
a user-friendly automated interface for very complex Capital Calls and IRR's.
*Innovative Timeline Tracking Program:
o I developed a procedure for tracking timelines on new and existing databases.
Fred Rook, CTO at ChannelPoint (one of our portfolio companies) managing over 70
0 programmers, was so impressed with the procedure he asked to be able use the p
rogram at his company. He was very amazed at how I was able to handle so many pr
ojects with such a small staff.
*Disaster Recovery:
o All servers and databases are properly documented and have been found to be ve
ry valuable, especially during company audits. A 2006 audit revealed that my dep
artment was understaffed and consistently under budget.
o VMware servers with clones of all our critical servers. Also have our backup j
obs being copied to a Network storage device, including maintaining tapes off si
te.
*Vendor Relationships:
o Cisco VOIP Phone System - when replacing our Meridian phone system, I was able
to negotiate at a cost savings to the firm of $250,000.
*Management:
o Staff of five people, with staff retention of 15 plus years.
*New Technology:
o VMware - consolidated 30 servers onto three VMware servers, including BlackBer
ry, Active Directory, Citrix and Microsoft Exchange.
*Support:
o 150 office desktops, 60 laptops, 50 BlackBerry devices, 30 servers, 125 remote
users and 9 remote home offices.
*Budgeting:
o Consistently under budget for 10 years. Able to run leading-edge technology at
a low cost.
*Downtime:
o By implementing different failover strategies such as Radware, internet failov
er and Custom Redirect for phone lines I am able to maintain "business as usual"
even when a main system goes down.
LYNCH & MAYER, INC., NEW YORK, NY
1994 - 1999
Senior Network Systems Engineer
$6 billion money management firm with offices in New York and San Francisco
*Business Solutions:
o I implemented WinDX, a company portfolio system which I converted from a Wang
system to a SQL-based system. The project had been three years behind schedule.
I was given 3 months to implement and successfully completed the project in 6 we
eks.
*Consulting Services:
o Despite having a developer on staff, I undertook and maintained a Limited Part
ner marketing report, which initially cost the company over $400,000 to develop.
The company felt they were being squeezed by the consultant and he was eventual
ly fired.
*Analytical Program:
o Analyzed and maintained a program that was developed by one of the investment
team members after the person was let go. The program measured the performance o
f each member on the investment team.
*Computer Room:
o Set up and built an entirely new computer room for the company, which included
a separate computer room specifically used by the trading floor.
*Budget:
o I consistently ran under budget all five years at Lynch & Mayer.
*Managed and implemented:
o 200 Node Network including 6-NT Servers, 3-Novell Servers, and 75-NT Workstati
ons. Microsoft Exchange 5 with Internet Access using Outlook as the client. Net
work Internet Access using Microsoft Proxy Server 2 to Lynch & Mayer's IP provid
er UUNET. Microsoft SQL 6.5 for Lynch & Mayer's Landmark Trading System and Plat
inum for Lynch & Mayer's Accounting System. 35 laptops with dial-in capabilities
using Shiva as the Dial-in Server.
*Infrastructure:
o Designed the structure and network for multiple computer rooms and disaster re
covery site. This included Fast Ethernet Hubs, Switches and Routers, which were
Bay Network and Cisco. Servers used were COMPAQ Proliant and DELL PowerEdge. Dat
a Feeds setup Bridge, Bloomberg and FactSet.
*Daily Trade Blotter:
o Morning Matrix Reports used daily by portfolio managers. Report of securities
that needed to be traded that morning based on MidCap, LargeCap and SmallCap cri
teria.
