Ann Haren- Chemist

Summary
Eight years experience in pharmaceutical formulation of oral dosage forms, analy
tical methods development and materials research for medical devices. Worked ext
ensively with top researchers and patent holders in each field. Received fast t
rack promotions, employee of the year nomination. Several products on the marke
t. Studied industrial chemistry in Ireland and received broad training in Engine
ering and Organic Pharmaceutical Chemistry principles. Received Irish Entrepren
eur award as college student. Continued studies in both Engineering and Pharmace
utics with classes from Brown and UNH.

Experience
1988 - 1991 Allergan Optical, Woodbury, NY
Analytical Chemist
Developed novel HPLC, GC, FTIR, GC-FTIR and UV methods to evaluate new material
s for contact lenses andbio-materials and to evaluate quality of existing produc
ts and processes.
Worked with engineering to develop new surface treatment and testing methods fo
r polymers used in proposed new medical devices.
Coordinated research equipment purchase for new analytical equipment and traini
ng of assistants in analytical methods.
Worked closely with engineering and contract consultants to recommend new conta
ct lens materials, products, and processes. Presented final proposals to senior
marketing and research executives.
1991- 1996 Pfizer, Pharmaceutical Formulation Research Groton, CT
Formulation Chemist
Investigated process scale-up for an antibiotic solution and quickly determined
the cause of a previous persistent manufacturing problem. Worked with productio
n to eliminate the problem.
Developed analytical methods for small molecule antibiotic solutions and conduct
ed long range stability studies.
Reported results and prepared reports for New Drug Applications and Investigati
ve New Drug Applications for new drug formulations describing formulation proces
s scale-up, stability investigations, and bio-availability research.
Trained new formulation chemists in the use of and methods validation for HPLC,
optical microscopy, and particle sizing equipment.
Successfully developed a novel freeze drying formulation technique for
a cyclodextran-complexed anti-psychotic drug to improve solubility of the drug a
nd to improve bio-availability of the drug complex in solution form. The drug i
s now selling as "Geodon".
Presented posters at on-site presentations and attended conferences hosted by N
ew England Association for Pharmaceutical Research. (NERPA)
Developed a crystalline suspension formulation and manufacturing process for in
sulinotropin, a protein proven to stimulate the production of insulin in type tw
o diabetes cases. Interacted with leading scientists in the field to apply theor
etical crystallization processes and develop a viable production process. The dr
ug and process was bought by Novo-Nordisk, the world's largest supplier of insul
in at that time.
Conducted all research in a very fast-paced environment with multiple on-going
projects and with regular weekly meetings with other department leaders. Project
requirements were often adjusted as a result ofMarketing or Manufacturing or Pa
ckaging or Analytical departments feedback.
Investigated the ligand-binding behavior of crystalline protein suspensions in
the presence of zincwith or without the presence of cresols. Developed basic res
earch techniques including calorimetry to investigate the unexpected excipient i
nteractions with the protein drug.
Published this research in "The Journal of Pharmaceutical Science."
1986 - 1987 Crown Paints (Student Co-operative education, nine months) Dublin, I
reland
Quality Control Chemist
Conducted in-process testing of paints .
Tested raw materials for physical and chemical standards
Evaluated new additives for paints and new paint formulations
Investigated customer complaints such as "exploding paint cans", isolated probl
em sources including chemical instabilities and manufacturing inconsistencies an
d worked with customers, research and manufacturing to rectify problems.

1997 - present, Madison, CT

Self-Employed
Became a member of the American Medical Writers' Association
Worked as a freelance writer.
Designed after school workshops for Science and Math and presented these to ele
mentary school children at local elementary and middle schools.
Continued to develop and present science classesduring my own children's' eleme
ntary and middle school years.
Lead my daughters girl scout troop for eight years. Became the town coordinator
for Girl Scouts Outdoor training and yearly Camporee with over 150 girls taking
part in both programs for four years running.
Worked with Girl scout headquarters to train older girls to design and run educa
tional programs for younger girls such as "Girl Scout day at the Zoo" at the Br
idgeport Zoo.

Education
1984 - 1988 University of Limerick, Limerick, Ireland
BSc. Industial Chemistry.
Specialization in pharmaceutical organic chemistry

Other awards, continued education.

Received graduate credit from Brown University for graduate pharmaceutical clas
ses offered at Pfizer
Studied Chemical engineering unit processes at University of New Haven
Received the Irish Idustrial Development Authority "New Entrepreneur" runner-up
award for the design of a process to produce a high proof beverage from potatoes
.
Received "Girl Scout Leader of the year" award from the Madison Service unit
Received research department nomination for "Allergan Optical employee of the ye
ar".
