“Can You Hear Me Now?”

With its ‘‘Can You Hear Me Now?’’ campaign, Verizon joined other advertising
campaigns that had reached iconic status by asking questions not always meant to
be answered. The promotion was really about being connected to the right service
provider (Verizon), so when you answered the incoming call, you would be able to
hear with clarity.

In the gospels, Jesus was constantly saying, “Let those with ears hear!” Why is
hearing so important and vital for us as followers of Jesus? Regardless of our
condition, Jesus has some “good news” that can direct our thinking and our steps!

No matter what we are doing or where we are located, Jesus desires to speak to
us! Beware of getting in a “drop zone,” where the connection could be dropped.
Where? Maybe the places we go or the words we use that prevent us from hearing
from Jesus? Regardless, Jesus is persistent and patient with us. When Jesus calls
us, we simply need to be available and attentive to his voice. Why? Hear the
words of God as spoken through the Prophet Isaiah, “Do not remember the
former things, or consider the things of old. I am about to do a new
thing; now it springs forth, do you not perceive it?” Isaiah 43:19.

Long before Verizon asked, Jesus asked and continues to ask, “Can You Hear Me
Now?”

>>> MINISTRY OPPORTUNITIES <<<
(1) 5th Sunday Combined Worship
May 29, 10 AM!
Worship! This year the month of May has 5 Sundays!
This means that on 5th Sunday, May 29, we will have a
combined worship service at 10:00! No Sunday School or
Extension Classes that day.
Church Dinner! Following the combined worship service
there will be a potluck luncheon in the Fellowship Hall.
The church will provide barbecue, iced tea and all the
paper products. After we eat, Steve Kohl and Harold
Edwards will share a few highlights and show slides from their recent mission trips.

Mark your calendars! We invite everyone to join us

MAY 29 at 10:00!

(2) Wednesday Noon Services!

Come for a time of Refreshing! We are now having worship with Communion every
Wednesday at noon. The services are from 12:00-12:30 in the sanctuary and will
be every Wednesday. We invite everyone to attend!
Tazza Restaurant (across the street from McKendree Church) will give a 10%
discount on Wednesday afternoons if you bring in a bulletin from our Noon Service.

(3) Worship/Music Ministry

Call out for Jubilate Choir! We desire singers to come join us. If you have a song in
your heart and love music, come join us on Thursdays from 11am-12pm. Enjoy the
music and fellowship. In the future we're also going to have a Jubilate Choir
Reunion, as well as have an informative session for those who might not be
actively with us or who would maybe be interested in this ensemble.
9 am Musicians Worship Retreat! Coming this summer we will take a day and
brainstorm about the future of worship through music at McKendree. Be prepared
to bring 2-3 new songs that we could listen to and talk about for worship. Also
bring an instrument or multiple instruments. (In the future
we plan to do this quarterly.) Date to be announced.
Sound Training Event! Saturday, May 28, 1 pm. If you run
media at McKendree or desire to learn how to run live sound,
Cleveland Croft (25+ year professional live sound veteran)
will be holding an educational and interactive sound training
event. We will learn basics of how live sound works, and get into some more
intermediate and advanced sound training techniques. This is an important part of
worship ministry at McKendree, and we welcome new people to this ministry.
(4) Children and Youth Ministry Updates:
We welcome Elizabeth Gay as our Director of Children’ s and Youth Ministry for
this summer! Adrienne Harrell, our Children’s Director, will be off this summer to
work with YouthWorks as an Area Director in Minnesota and Wisconsin. She will be
back at McKendree in September. Austin Jones, our Youth Director, has graduated
from Belmont University, and is leaving Nashville to attend law school. Elizabeth
Gay is a member here at McKendree Church, and has stepped in to work in these
ministries. She is already hard at work, and will lead Vacation Bible School and our
entire Children and Youth Ministry this summer.

McKendree Day Care News

A Beautiful New T-Shirt for A 21st Birthday Celebration
Our Day Care program recently celebrated twenty-one
years of high quality childcare service to the downtown
community. To commemorate the occasion, the center
sold beautiful T-shirts with the McKendree logo on the
front and five year old Bridget Byrd’s drawing entitled,
“McKendree Kids Shine” on the back.
Children, staff, and parents (decked out in the new shirts)
gathered at the center for a cookie
party and parade through downtown on
May 6th.
Within the next month, the T-shirt sale will be extended to
include the entire church community. Watch for sales tables
before and after church services so that you may pre-order your
own special shirt. Children’s sizes cost $10 and adult sizes,
$12. Proceeds from the sale go toward the cost of replacing the
center ’s cribs next year ($5,000 goal). Thus far the T-shirt sale
has netted $477, proving that McKendree Kids really do shine!
