Ganoderma - The Health Benefits of Ganoderma
By Cathy Wong, About.com Guide
Updated May 27, 2009
About.com Health's Disease and Condition content is reviewed by our Medical Review Board
More commonly known as reishi, ganoderma is a hard, bitter mushroom used to promote health and
longevity in traditional Chinese medicine. Proponents claim that ganoderma can relieve fatigue, keep
cholesterol in check, curb high blood pressure, tame inflammation, build stamina, and support the
immune system.
An increasingly popular natural remedy, ganoderma is only used as a medicinal mushroom and isn't
recommended for cooking.
Ganoderma Research

Ganoderma shows promise in reducing cholesterol levels and easing allergy-related inflammation of the
airways, according to preliminary evidence from animal-based studies. Here's a look at more of the
science behind ganoderma's health-enhancing effects.

1) Cancer and the Immune System

Often used as an immune stimulant by people with cancer (as well as HIV), ganoderma has been shown
to strengthen immunity as well as combat cancer-cell proliferation. In a 2003 study of 34 people with
advanced-stage cancer, for instance, taking ganoderma in supplement form three times daily for 12 weeks
led to a significant increase in T-cells (known to play a central role in immune defense).

Lab tests on breast cancer cells, meanwhile, found that combining extracts of ganoderma and green tea
heightened the mushroom's ability to slow cancer-cell growth.

2) Antioxidant Benefits

Several small studies have suggested that regular use of ganoderma supplements may increase your levels
of antioxidants, compounds thought to protect against disease and aging.

3) Relief of Urinary Tract Symptoms

In a 2008 study of 88 men with urinary tract symptoms, researchers found that ganoderma was
significantly superior to placebo in providing symptom relief.

Reishi, or Ganoderma Lucidum, has been around for centuries. Worth it’s weight in gold, used only by
emperors and other royals, this ‘Miracle Herb’ has been overlooked by western culture for years.

To their detriment, few people know about Ganoderma’s marvelous health benefits and antioxidant
effects. Even the most expensive antioxidant on the market can only boast a fraction of the 100’s
ofantioxidants found in Ganoderma Lucidum.
Especially good for the circulatory system and respiratory tract, Ganoderma has been known to lower
high blood pressure, balance good and bad cholesterol, and lower overall cholesterol as well as reducing
symptoms related to asthma, bronchitis and other lung related problems.

The health returns Ganoderma provides are too numerous to completely describe in this article but it has
been investigated by scientists around the world as a treatment for cancer, arthritis, insomnia, fungal
growth, and the list goes on.

Recognized in Japan and China as a licensed medical treatment, Ganoderma is also used for its sedative
and calming effects. Years of ongoing research in Japan, China, USA, and the UK are consistently
proving the unmatched benefits this mushroom provides in areas of holistic health and healing.

How can one little mushroom do all that and more?

Ganoderma Lucidum affects the body as a whole, strengthening the immune system and balancing the
body’s natural state. Ganoderma gets to the core and works from the inside out producing some amazing
results on the way.

Until recently, Ganoderma has been expensive and hard to find in viable quantities. That is because, out
of thousands of trees in the forests of Asia, the Reishi mushroom only grows on ONE SPECIFIC TREE.
One company has put years of time and effort into cultivating this mushroom indoors. The result of that
effort will strongly affect the health of people all over the world.

Ganoderma lucidium has No Known Herb Drug Interaction

No Known Herb Drug Interaction For Ganoderma lucidium, Only a Drug Enhancing Effect
Ganoderma May Help Reduce Cholesterol
Cardiovascular disease has been called an epidemic of sorts in North America and Europe. Not surprising
when you consider a typical North American lifestyle of not enough physical activity, diet high in
saturated fats, and fast paced living driving up stress levels.
Even though the National Center for Health Statistics reported Americans average total cholesterol has
dropped substantially from 1978 - 1990, the American Heart Association has reported 98.1 million adult
Americans still have borderline high blood cholesterol levels and this puts them at greater risk of
developing Cardiovascular disease.
Elevated cholesterol levels are one of the major risk factors identified by the American Heart Association
in the development of Cardiovascular disease which is the number one killer in North America and
Europe. We need to reduce cholesterol levels.
Adenosine which is found in Ganoderma lucidium helped to reduce cholesterol
This number one rated herb in Traditional Chinese Medicine has many potent healing properties. One
being that it may help reduce cholesterol and or may help the liver in suppressing its production.
Researchers from the Beijing College of Traditional Chinese Medicine found that Adenosine which is
found in Ganoderma lucidium helped to reduce cholesterol in their studies.
Researchers at the Nestle Research Center in Switzerland called Ganoderma lucidium "a renowed
medicinal species". In their study on hamsters and minipigs, oxgenated lanosterol derived from
Ganoderma lucidium "inhibited cholesterol synthesis".
With hamsters it was able to reduce cholesterol (total) by 9.8% and HDL levels by 11.2%.
In minipigs the oxygenated lanosterol derived from the mushroom Ganoderma lucidium was able to
reduce cholesterol (total) by 20%, LDL by 27%, and HDL by 18%.
The researchers conclusion was that Ganoderma "has the potential to reduce LDL cholesterol in vivo
(inside the body) through various mechanisms... innovative new cholesterol lowering foods and
medicines containing Gl (Ganoderma lucidium) are envisioned."
REISHI'S MEDICAL PROPERTIES
In the 16th Century pharmacopedia Pen T'sao Kang Mu, which contains hundreds of natural medicines
the Chinese have used for thousands of years, compiler Le Shih-chen described the uses of Reishi. "It
positively affects the life energy, or qi of the heart, repairing the chest area and benefiting those with a
knotted and tight chest." He wrote that it also increases intellectual capacity and banishes forgetfulness.
"Taken over a long period of time, agility of the body will not cease, and the years are lengthened to those
of the Immortal Fairies." In the Orient, Reishi is considered a Fu Zhen herb (immune modulation).
Presently, Reishi has various applications including lowering or raising blood pressure, stimulating liver
actions, blood cleansing, and acting as an adaptogen in helping the body fight the effects of stress.
Chinese herbalists prize it for its abilities to regenerate the liver. In high doses, and to some degree normal
doses, Ganoderma maybe classified as a liver detoxicant and protectant. In traditional Oriental
applications Reishi is also used to treat insomnia, gastric ulcers, neurasthenia, arthritis, nephritis, asthma,
bronchitis, hypertension and poisoning. It is also being used in treating neuromuscular disorders -- stress-
induced tension, myasthenia gravis and muscular dystrophy -- all with varying degrees of success.
Toxicity studies show no toxic effects on humans. In research, patients are given much higher doses, as
high as 10 grams of extract per day, with no ill effects.
Chinese women take Reishi for beautification of the skin. The results are probably due to the mushroom's
hormone-potentiating effects, Jones said.
Reishi is included in many Japanese patents for hair loss formulas, including products used for alopecia.
Spore extract injections of Reishi are also being used to treat lupus in China. The mycelium of Reishi
contains high levels of polysaccharides, which have been shown in research to induce the production of
interferon. Interferon is a protein produced inside cells to fight viral infection. Polysaccharides are also
tumor fighters and help stimulate the immune system. Reishi is being recognized for its adjunct use as an
immune system stimulator when cancer therapy is being used. The use of Reishi as a cancer treatment in
the Orient is centuries old. In following the concept of qi tonics, Reishi is used to strengthen the body's
resistance to outside forces. Former heart surgeon Dr. Fukumi Morishige, a leading authority on vitamin
C in Japan, reports that when Reishi and vitamin C are combined the results against cancer and other
diseases are far better than when Reishi is ingested. This is because the vitamin makes the
polysaccharides more accessible to the immune system. It is also an adaptogen, with properties similar to
ginseng. The adenosine in Reishi may explain why the Chinese use it for patients suffering from nervous
tension. Adenosine relaxes skeletal muscles, calms the central nervous system and operates against the
stimulating action of caffeine. "Reishi mushrooms are certainly an herb for the 90s and beyond,"
commented Jeff Chilton, president of North American Reishi. "Considering that Reishi has a history of
use that spans 2,000 years and is more highly revered than ginseng in the Orient, one could readily
compare its potential to that of ginseng."

With approximately 400 different bioactive compounds, the Mushroom detoxifies and boosts your body's
natural healing ability. Find out if this health alternative supplement is for you.
So much of what we eat today is far from healthy. Chemical additives keep food looking good. But the
chemicals have no nutritional value and some are harmful to our health.
Raw food health just might be of a big benefit and regular consumption of this mushroom can enhance
our body's immune system
Generally, the red mushroom is recommended as an adaptogen, immune modulator, and a general health
tonic.
A strong antibacterial activity against Gram-positive bacteria was also manifested.
It is also used to help treat anxiety, high blood pressure, hepatitis, bronchitis, insomnia, and asthma.
Research is being done on Ganoderma and cancer, with some amazing results.
By detoxifying the body and improving healthy cell numbers, diseases have less of a chance to invade and
get a stronghold. In another words, a healthy body is less likely to become ill.
Is there any evidence?
A considerable number of studies have been done in Japan, China, USA and the UK for the past 30 years.
They have shown that the consumption of the mushroom (Red Reishi / Ling Zhi) has been linked to the
treatment of a vast range of diseases, common ailments and conditions.
However most of the scientific research that has been conducted appears to strongly support this
mushroom's role as a normalizing substance- nutritional supplement that can yield medical benefits
through it normalization and regulation of the body’s organs and functions.
For over 2000 years, Reishi mushrooms have been considered by the Chinese to be a high quality herbal
medicine. In traditional Chinese medical theory,Ganoderma, Reishi or Lingzhi is among the highest
ranking.
It improves overall health, increases the body's healing ability, promotes longevity and does not cause any
side effects even though it is taken continuously.
According to Li Shi-Zhen, the famous physician and pharmacologist in Chinese history, long-term
consumption of Reishi will promote a strong and healthy body and assure longevity. It has been proven
by modern medical research that Reishi has a wide range of beneficial effects.
Its main function is to promote blood circulation and increase the metabolic activities of cells
(detoxification) and also helps with the proper functioning of all internal organs (balance the body
functions).

Research has demonstrated that Ganoderma Lucidum has several different active constituents. One group
of active constituents is the polysaccharides. The various types of polysaccharides found in Ganoderma
Lucidum have demonstrated immune-enhancing properties. This includes enhancement of several
important interleukins. Another major class of compounds is the triterpenes. These compounds have been
reported to have adaptogenic, anti-hypertensive, and anti-allergy effects.

Cardiovascular Benefits
Ganoderma Lucidum has been shown in some studies to inhibit platelet aggregation and reduce blood
pressure. In studies of people with hypertension, researchers found blood pressure was significantly
reduced over two-weeks' time with reishi supplementation.
Immune Benefits
Ganoderma Lucidum is commonly prescribed by practitioners for long-term immune system support. In
studies involving patients with advanced tumors, the patients were given Ganoderma Lucidum for thirty
days. Researchers found a marked immune-modulating effect as demonstrated by an increase in T
lymphocytes and decreased CD8 counts. Patients also reported reduced side effects due to chemotherapy
or radiation as well as postoperation recovery.
Blood Sugar Balance
Studies have shown Ganoderma Lucidum to have a blood sugar lowering effect. Much of this activity
appears to be due to polysaccharides known as Ganoderans A, B, and C.
It appears there are three main mechanisms behind this hypoglycemic effect. This includes Ganoderma
Lucidum's ability to elevate plasma insulin levels, to enhance peripheral tissue utilization of glucose, and
to enhance liver metabolism of glucose.
Anti-inflammatory Effects
Studies have shown that hot-water extracts of Ganoderma Lucidum have anti-inflammatory effects. One
study found that 50 milligrams of reishi powder had comparable effects to 5 milligrams of
hydrocortisone.
Liver Protector
Ganoderma Lucidum is commonly used for its hepatoprotective (liver protective) action. One study of
patients with hepatitis B and elevated liver enzymes (SGOT/SGPT) and bilirubin were given reishi for
three months. Significant reduction in SGOT and SGPT were noticed within one month. After three
months all values were within normal range.
Oxygenation
One of the unique uses of Ganoderma Lucidum is for altitude sickness. Reishi appears to reduce altitude
sickness by oxygenating the blood. This benefit was studied in Asian mountain climbers that ascended
mountains as high as 17,000 feet with minimal reaction.

The Health Benefits of Ganoderma Extract - Sep 17, 2010 Adam Fonseca
Derived from mushrooms bearing the same name, ganoderma extract is an alternative or herbal
medication that can be used to help treat minor medical conditions and to promote overall good health.
The benefits of this herbal medication are many, thus making ganoderma more popular among alternative
medicine healers and patients alike. Here are a few general health benefits that ganoderma offers.
Cardiac Health
Heart-related issues can effect any patient at any age. According to some researchers, ganoderma extract
can be used to help many cardiac-related illnesses. For example, ganoderma extract has been used for the
treatment of high blood pressure and for helping treat blocked arteries due to the herb's ability to thin the
blood. This blood-thinning quality allows the heart to not work as hard to push blood through veins and
arteries, thus leading to a lower blood pressure. Anti-coagulant properties of ganoderma also allow
prevent excessive blood platelet formation inside the veins, which could otherwise lead to internal blood
clots and stroke. Be sure to speak to a medical professional for more information on how ganoderma
extract can be used for a specific heart medical condition.
Immune System Boost
Another benefit that ganoderma extract offers to patients is its natural ability to boost immune system
functionality and effectiveness. As the Ganoderma Extract informational website suggests, this herbal
medication strengthens the immune system, thus allowing the body to fight off sickness and infection
with greater success. While additional research is needed to determine how ganoderma extract can help
auto-immune disease patients, current findings offer hope to those patients dealing with an
immunodeficiency disorder.
Mental Health
Taking ganoderma extract can also help improve a person's mental health by relieving anxiety and stress,
and can even assist in concentration and focus. According to the University of Michigan Health System,
ganoderma directly impacts the central nervous system and can increase the level of serotonin hormone
levels in the brain. This effect brings on a feeling of overall wellbeing within the patient as stress and
anxiety levels diminish. Be sure to speak to a psychiatrist or medical doctor for more information on how
ganoderma extract can benefit mental health.

What Are the Health Benefits of Ganoderma Coffee?
By John Kirzno
Let's face facts, coffee is a beverage that's loved and enjoyed around the world. There seems to be a
worldwide, cultural appeal to the coffee bean that has been clear for thousands of years. Whether you're
merely drinking it at home, enjoying it with a friend at a local cafe, or celebrating a moment with loved
ones, drinking coffee is a pleasurable endeavor that's meant to be savored and enjoyed. However, what if
along with drinking coffee, you could reap health benefits as well? Does the combination sound
impossible? Well it's not because Ganoderma Coffee has fused the red reishi mushroom with robust
aromatic coffee to make for a delightful experience. It tastes and mixes just like regular coffee, and it
looks just the a typical cup of coffee you would enjoy at a local cafe or restaurant. But it's not exactly the
same, and is on an entirely different plane than traditional brewed coffee.
For starters Ganoderma coffee will strengthen a weak immune system, support liver function, lower
cholesterol and blood pressure, build up the cardiovascular and respiratory systems, and, counteract the
effects of years of smoking, by repairing the lungs to normal function again. This coffee works wonders
for joint pain, fatigue and nervous system responses. If you suffer from an autoimmune illness like
diabetes, osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, lupus, Gillian bar syndrome, myasthenia gravis syndrome, or
multiple sclerosis, to name a few of the 200 autoimmune illnesses out there, ganoderma can indeed be
beneficial to you.
Drinking three cups of coffee daily can greatly reduce the symptoms of anxiety and depression, which are
among the hundreds of mental disorders that people are diagnosed with every year. The active ingredient
in ganoderma, reishi mushroom, can aid the body in the production of serotonin and dopamine levels,
which will ensure greater feelings of self-worth and confidence, as well as reduce depression. This coffee
is equally adept at helping with the symptoms of degenerative diseases like Alzheimer's, dementia,
atherosclerosis, Parkinson's, Huntington's disease, and chronic traumatic encephalopathy. Ganoderma or
red reishi mushroom is used in traditional Chinese medicine to help heal and keep the body healthy, both
internally and externally.
Ganoderma Coffee helps you both on the inside and out. For example, drinking this coffee will
significantly reduce the appearance of acne and facial scars, visibly lessen the appearance of fine lines
and wrinkles, and do massive repair on sun-damaged skin. Ganoderma works by strengthening the dermal
layer of the skin, which is directly underneath the epidermis. The dermis layer is the one that has the
responsibility for collagen, moisture barrier and oil production. Therefore, Ganoderma Coffee is not only
a great way to continue to drink your daily coffee, but you can also enjoy the health benefits as well.

● Increase brain acstivity.
● Rejuvenate and make you feel young and alert.
● Improve the body"s immune system.
● Promote a good night"s sleep.

Switching from your regular high-acidic caffeinated coffee to a healthier, safer, and more nutritious
Ganoderma coffee, tea or hot chocolate makes sense due to the Ganoderma ability to improve the
functions of the immune system in adults as well as children.
When you do your research on Ganoderma on Google and on www.PubMed.gov, a service of the U.S.
National Library of Medicine and the National Institutes of Health, you get the following information.
A) The Ganoderma Lucidum mushroom (also known as Reishi in Japan and Lingzhi in China ) helps the
body adapt to many types of body stresses such as trauma, sleep deprivation, temperature, exposure to
toxins, psychological stress, infection, or radiation. Ganoderma Lucidum helps the organisms in the body
return to a normal, balanced state after illness.
B) Ganoderma acts as regulator that fine-tunes the immune systems. Its main purpose is to detect
pathogens such as bacteria and other viruses that attack the body.
C) A compromised immune system can develop viruses, parasites, bacteria and fungi that cause disease.
Repeated use of common antibiotics, anti-viral agents, and anti-fungal medications can cause microbes to
develop a resistance to the medications. Consuming Ganoderma can eliminate these problems.
Ganoderma is gaining popularity among many as an adjunct to combating the disagreeable side effects of
radiation and chemotherapy associated with cancer treatment.
D) The Ganoderma red mushroom has exceptional anti-stress qualities that can help improve memory,
reduce tension and sharpen your concentration. It is particularly helpful in the treatment of degenerative
diseases, such as Alzheimer’s and dementia that affects the elderly. Ganoderma has been around for many
centuries. It has been used for over 4000 years in Chinese and Japanese Traditional Medicine.

How long have you been suffering due to a specific illness like high blood pressure, diabetes, or heart
problem? If you are not at the moment, how do you know that you will not suffer from any disease like
cancer or paralysis in the future? Indeed, the changing times has brought do many advances to people's
living. But, as it elevates the people's living condition, it also brings a lot of new illnesses and diseases
that are becoming harder and harder to cure.
Undeniably, the best cure to any disease is prevention. Knowing the important things you should avoid
before you suffer minor illnesses like muscle and joint pain, rheumatism, and insomnia-that could even
lead to more serious health problems like paralysis, ulcer, and heart problems-is to start the journey on
finding the best solution.
And how do you do it? It is by starting to discover or rediscover the things that might seem impossible at
the beginning. Like what most people did when they discovered one of the healing properties of "the king
of herbs," the Ganoderma. The Ganoderma healing properties were discovered way back in ancient China
shrouded with a dash of mystery and tons of secrecy. It was then described as the "celestial herb" because
the Ganoderma healing properties does not incur any side effects regardless of amount and period of
usage. This was then considered as the ultimate cure for almost all illness and diseases because the
Ganoderma healing properties were really effective in the practices of the people in the Orient. Aside
from being known for its anti-aging properties and longevity, the Ganoderma healing properties spread to
the Western World. Because of the technology and the science used by medical practitioners in the West,
the Ganoderma healing properties is now more established upon the discovery of its 280 or more active
ingredients with healing medicinal properties.
Among the so many known Ganoderma healing properties are its contribution to the improvement of the
person's immune system. Aside from its positive response in numerous ailments, the Ganoderma healing
properties are evident in the three major killers of the modern times - cancer, cerebrosis or an organic
disease of the brain, and coronary diseases which are mostly related to problems in circulatory system of
the blood. Thus, the Ganoderma healing properties are clearly evident in its contribution in the correction
of the blood circulatory imbalance. And while it continues to strengthen the person's immune system to
prevent deterioration, the Ganoderma healing properties is also given credit for its capability to detoxify
the body and rejuvenate cells, thus, balancing the functions of numerous organs that get rid of disorders.

Due to the strong evidences of the Ganoderma healing properties evident in numerous studies on its
effectiveness in the treatment of many diseases, the demand for it continuously increases. More and more
people now consider it as a highly recognized preventive medicine for its detoxifying and anti-oxidants
qualities. The "natural wonder drug" helps a person's body to metabolize well while preventing tissue
degeneration that causes different diseases. But, the healing powers of this mushroom don't stop at by
merely acting as a detoxificant, it also acts as a protector and regulator of different organs such as the
liver and the intestine. Aside from this, the Ganoderma healing properties is also accounted for being an
'adjuster' of blood pressure while enhancing the stability of the various systems of the body.
Indeed, there are many claims on the almost unbelievable healing powers of Ganoderma. But, people's
bodies operate on its own major systems and it cannot always absorb everything one takes in. People who
are interested to use this 'wonder herb' should try to research about its properties and do a bit of fact-
finding before they take on the decision to try it. One really has to discover for themselves if the
Ganoderma healing properties will create a balance between the external and internal body conditions. If
the properties will work on his systems properly, then one doesn't have to can yield to diseases brought by
the ever-changing times.

Benefits of Ganoderma
The benefits of Ganoderma a wide an varied. Ganoderma works on the body at a cellular level to improve
ones health and general wellbing.
Cardiovascular Benefits
Ganoderma Lucidum has been shown in some studies to inhibit platelet aggregation and reduce blood
pressure. In studies of people with hypertension, researchers found blood pressure was significantly
reduced over two-weeks' time with Ganoderma (Reishi) supplementation.
Patients also reported reduced side effects due to chemotherapy
or radiation as well as post operation recovery.
Blood Sugar Balance
Studies have shown Ganoderma Lucidum to have a blood sugar lowering effect. Much of this activity
appears to be due to polysaccharides known as Ganoderans A, B, and C.
It appears there are three main mechanisms behind this hypoglycaemic effect.

Health Benefits and Medicinal Uses of Reishi Mushroom (Lingzhi, Ganoderma lucidum)
I admire the Chinese people for their knowledge about traditional medicine. They have a long list of herbs
used in treating various diseases and in promoting good health; they have been using those herbs for
thousands of years. They have contributed a lot in the development of pharmacology as a science. Today,
many people around the world are enjoying the health benefits and medicinal uses of various herbs found
in Traditional Chinese medicine. Western scientists are beginning to understand the scientific bases of all
claimed health benefits of Chinese herbs. They look at chemical components of the herbs that
demonstrate therapeutic effects for cancer, diabetes, heart disease, liver disease, sexual dysfunction,
neurological disorders, gastrointestinal diseases, infection, and other human diseases. One of the most
studied herbs is the lingzhi mushroom, also known as reishi (Japanese), yeongji (Korean), and
Ganoderma lucidum (scientific name).

Reishi was called as the “mushroom of immortality” because of the Chinese belief that it promotes
longevity. It is one of the oldest medicinal mushrooms, being used for more than four thousand years. Its
close relative is Ganoderma tsugae, which is also edible and used medicinally. Reishi grows in China,
Japan, and North America. It is usually found in the base of trees and in decaying woods. The mushroom
has distinctive morphology and characteristics: flat, kidney-shaped, soft (if fresh), and red-varnished.
Reishi is bitter and no significant side effects. It is usually used as tea and food supplement, available in
capsules. Due to increasing international demand for reishi, it is now cultivated to increase supply.
Chemical Composition
Scientists isolated approximately 400 different bioactive compounds in reishi including triterpenoids,
nucleotides, polysaccharides, steroids, sterols, phenols, fatty acids, proteins, amino acids, and trace
elements. The triterpenoid ganoderic acids are among the most studied component of reishi. Different
types of ganoderic acid have been found to exhibit therapeutic properties.

Health Benefits and Medicinal Uses

Claimed health benefits of reishi:
● Immunomodulator
● Anti-atherosclerotic
● Anti-inflammatory
● Analgesic
● Chemo-preventive
● Antitumor
● Anticancer metastasis
● Chemo and radio protective
● Sleep promoting
● Antibacterial
● Antiviral
● Hypolipidemic
● Anti-fibrosis
● Hepatoprotective
● Anti-diabetic
● Anti-androgenic
● Anti-angiogenic
● Anti-herpetic
● Antioxidative
● Anti-aging
● Anti-ulcer
● Estrogenic activity
● Arthritis treatment
● Alleviate common allergy symptoms
● Improves organ function
Probably the most important use of reishi is for cancer treatment. In China, Korea, and Japan, reishi is
actually used to treat cancer. It is prescribed as cancer supplement in the three countries. There is an
undergoing debate on whether to classify reishi as a food supplement for health maintenance or actually a
therapeutic drug for medical purposes. In laboratory studies, reishi extract has been found to inhibit
cancer growth and metastasis.
Scientific studies have also been done to investigate the other claimed health benefits of reishi. So far, the
studies produced promising results.

anoderma Extract
Benefits of Red Reishi Mushrooms
Ganoderma extract comes from Ganoderma, also known as Reishi mushroom. Health benefits from the
red Reishi mushrooms include being used as vitamins to boost the immune system. Its benefits are
already known in the traditional Asian medicine for more than 2,000 years.
Yes, that's right...thousands of years! But this medicinal mushroom extract and its benefits are being
studied in the Western world only during the last 30 years.
Health institutions in the West are now advancing researches and studies on Ganoderma mushrooms for
its healing properties and potentials to build up the immune system. These institutions include the Cancer
Research UK (CRC), the City of Hope National Medical Center in California and the Memorial Sloan-
Kettering Cancer Center.
Results of various studies done show a lot of good news.
According to the CRC's report "Medicinal Mushrooms and Cancer", Ganoderma extract can be a possible
source of new anti-tumor agents.
Therapeutic Benefits of Ganoderma Extract

The following are some of the known beneficial effects of Ganoderma extract on your health...
1. Anti-tumor properties

It prevents oncogenesis - the process in which a normal cell turns abnormal and eventually, malignant.

It induces and promotes apoptosis or the spontaneous death of an abnormal cell.

2. Works against viruses and bacteria

Reishi mushroom helps in the prevention of Hepa B and influenza A viruses because of its capacity to
build up the immune system.

3. Regulates and enhances immune system activities

Ganoderma extract acts as an immune system supplement. It activates the various immune responses in
your body. For other immune system supplements, see Spirulina and Vitamin C.

4. Antioxidant properties

5. Protective effect on liver

6. Protects your body against radiation damage

If you are undergoing radiation therapy for your cancer treatment, exposure to high levels of radiation can
compromise your immune system. Taking Ganoderma extract is beneficial to you because it will help
build up the immune system.

7. Regulates blood pressure

8. Decreases lower urinary tract symptoms

9. Anti-hormone activity

Ganoderma extract can inhibit the enzyme - aromatase - that makes estrogen and the enzyme - 5-alpha
reductase - that produces androgen. To understand why Ganoderma mushroom shows such therapeutic
effects, see what this red Reishi mushroom contains in What is Ganoderma.
Implications of the Use of Ganoderma or Reishi Mushroom on Cancer Prevention
In 1971, the late U.S. President Richard Nixon signed the National Cancer Act, which waged war against
the disease by finding a cure. Almost 39 years later, the war is still not over. There is still no cure. Victory
is not even in the horizon.
Big shots in the field of research such as the National Cancer Institute and the American Cancer Society
now acknowledge the importance of awareness on prevention of the disease. They now advocate
prevention through a healthy lifestyle.
Also, the use of medicinal mushrooms such as Ganoderma extract to complement conventional medicine
is being explored more extensively.
The Cancer Research UK is already aware of the use of mushrooms in the Far East as vitamins to boost
the immune system and "as a source for the generation of pharmaceutical-grade medicines to treat a wide
variety of diseases, including tumors."
If you already have cancer, what benefits do you get from taking Ganoderma mushroom extract?
● It builds up your immune system because it stimulates the different immune cells - T-cells,
natural killers (NK), macrophages - to protect your healthy normal cells.
● Prevention of tumor spread or metastasis
● Prevention of formation of blood vessels in cancer cells. These blood vessels help provide
nutrients to the tumor.
● If you are undergoing radiation or chemotherapy, taking Ganoderma mushroom extract can either
significantly decrease, or totally eliminate painful side effects -- such as hair loss, sore throat,
nausea, inflammation of the stomach -- of both treatments.
● This is if Ganoderma mushroom extract is taken before, during and after the treatment.
According to a report on Anticancer effects of Ganoderma lucidum: a review of scientific evidence by Dr.
Yuen J.W., "quality of life of 65% of lung tumor patients showed improvement."
Plus...a study done by Cancer Research in the U.K. states "Ganoderma suppresses adhesion and migration
of highly invasive breast and prostate cancer cells."
Also, I have a personal experience with how Ganoderma can help someone with cancer. My Dad has
Stage 2b lung cancer, one of the most aggressive types.
He underwent radiation but he hated the negative side effects and so after only 3 sessions, he chose not to
continue with the treatment. He opted to take Ganoderma supplements instead.

Last December 2009, his doctor was surprised that his tumor stayed the same size when he was first
diagnosed.
For thousands of years, the phenomenal healing and cancer prevention potential of Reishi mushroom
benefits people in Asia. It's about time that Ganoderma extract gets a chance to prove its worth in
mainstream medicine.
