How does it feel to
be free?
My academic pathway after junior college was highly dependent on the type of
scholarship I could secure. At 18, I did not want to take up an offer that would
force me to choose a career path I may not be interested in after I graduate from
university. However, my direction became really clear when NUS offered me the
Global Merit Scholarship (GMS).

Being bond-free, the flexibility of the NUS GMS has enabled me to thoroughly
explore my interests. What’s more, I am given me the opportunity to receive a
holistic education, without any worries of financial burden. GMS has also allowed
me to join the University Scholars Programme (USP) and NUS Overseas College.
These two programmes are NUS’ top programmes and the hallmark of its unique
educational structure.

I am very glad to have chosen GMS as it has really enriched my academic life.
I was able to experience independent living in Silicon Valley and hands-on
entrepreneurism, as well as study a favourite subject, Psychology.

How far would you
take your passion to?
After graduating from Information Technology at Temasek Polytechnic,
I applied for the NUS Undergraduate (Merit) Scholarship. Choosing the
scholarship has been the best thing that happened to me. It has made a
difference in my life as I am privileged with infinite opportunities to enjoy
a fulfilling and eventful university life. I am also given the freedom to
chart my own path of personal growth and development. What’s more, the
scholarship does not carry a bond, which means I am free to pursue any
opportunities available to me after graduation.

My time in the School of Computing has been nothing short of amazing.

I have the pleasure of learning from a distinguished faculty armed with
deep theoretical expertise and industry experiences. Furthermore, I had
the chance to travel to many parts of the world to participate in study trips
and international case study competitions, as well as represent NUS and
Singapore in international youth conferences. These activities have not only
broadened my exposure, but have enabled me to meet many new friends
and experience new cultures.

What does it take to
make the first step?
Being awarded the NUS Undergraduate Scholarship has both
sweetened and enriched my academic experience at NUS Law
School. The Scholarship has not only provided me with the
freedom to pursue the areas of the law that I am most interested
in, but best of all, it is bond-free!

Apart from the luxury of spending four enjoyable years at

NUS, I am also privileged with endless opportunities. One such
opportunity was spending a semester abroad at the Centre for
Transnational Legal Studies in London, in the company of around
sixty students from eight different Law schools around the world.
I am really grateful for being provided with these opportunities
as I have benefitted greatly from the overseas and diverse
perspectives, which had coloured our classroom discussions on
Transnational and Comparative Law.

Where will your
passion take you?
At 19 and fresh out of junior college, I had only a scant idea
of what I want to do in the near future. But choosing the NUS
Scholarship has since cleared away all my uncertainties, and given
me wonderful direction and support. This includes financing three
academic and community service trips in my freshman year alone.

One of the best opportunities in NUS is the year-long cultural

immersion programme to Peking University, under the University
Scholars Programme. The Yuanpei programme also includes a
minor programme in China Studies, which allows me to further my
interest in Chinese culture and China’s business environment.

As an avid backpacker, I enjoy taking the offbeat track and seeking

out hidden parts of a foreign country. The NUS Scholarship has
given me the flexibility and support for which I am grateful, as I
can continue to carve out a successful route that I can call my own.

How can you dream
a bigger dream?
Being a recipient of the NUS Faculty Award brings many privileges.
Firstly, it freed my family of a huge financial burden by paying for
my tuition fees. It has also provided me with additional financial
capabilities, including staying on campus in a Hall of Residence. I have
experienced many things that I never once thought possible – my
Hall’s sports teams have welcomed me with open arms even though I
have never played those sports before; my Hall seniors have made my
transition into University seamless; international students have also
provided me with invaluable insights into their lives back home, giving
me the chance to further understand various cultures.

I am also given opportunities to attend events that allow me to have

interactions with not only students and the University, but business and
government leaders as well. These opportunities enrich my everyday
experiences, widen my horizon and encourage me to look at things
from different perspectives. All in all, the award has provided me with
a huge boost of confidence and the motivation to work hard
towards an academic target and a great degree.
