Meditando la Palabra
El misterio de la ascensión, más allá de su literalidad (Jesús as-
ciende al cielo y se sienta a la derecha del Padre), nos remite a
la exaltación del Hijo de Dios. La gloria velada de Jesucristo
bajo rasgos de una humanidad ordinaria que encontramos en
sus apariciones, entra en el dominio celeste desplegando toda
su potencialidad. Jesús ha sido constituido Señor, participando
en el poder y la autoridad del mismo Dios.
Así lo expresa san Pablo en la segunda lectura: “Lo hizo sentar
a su derecha en el cielo, por encima de todos los ángeles, prin-
cipados, potestades, virtudes y dominaciones, y por encima de
cualquier persona, no sólo del mundo actual sino también del
futuro”. También en el prefacio I de la Ascensión encontramos
la misma idea: “El Señor Jesús, Rey de la gloria, triunfador del
pecado y de la muerte, ante la admiración de los ángeles, as-
cendido (hoy) a lo más alto de los cielos, como Mediador entre
Dios y la humanidad, Juez del mundo y Señor de los espíritus
celestiales”. Jesús es verdaderamente Señor del cielo y de la
tierra.
La ascensión es, además, el inicio de la glorificación de la huma-
nidad. Porque en Jesucristo, verdadero Dios y verdadero hom-
bre, ha sido exaltada la naturaleza humana asumida por el Ver-
bo de Dios. De modo que la ascensión nos manifiesta “cuál es
la esperanza que les da su llamamiento, cuán gloriosa y rica es
la herencia que Dios da a los que son suyos y cuál la extraordi-
naria grandeza de su poder para con nosotros” (segunda lectu-
ra).
¿A que nos invita la ascensión de Jesús? El evangelio de san
Mateo que hoy leemos, nos narra que Jesús antes de ascender
al cielo, envía a sus discípulos a evangelizar a todos los pueblos:
“Vayan, pues, y enseñen a todas las naciones, bautizándolas en
el nombre del Padre y del Hijo y del Espíritu Santo, y enseñán-
dolas a cumplir todo cuanto yo les he mandado”.
La misión es un punto clave de la vida del cristiano. Somos
testigos del Resucitado. Jesús así se lo pide a sus discípulos:
“cuando el Espíritu Santo descienda sobre ustedes, los llenará
de fortaleza y serán mis testigos en Jerusalén, en toda Judea, en
Samaria y hasta los últimos rincones de la tierra”. De modo
que debemos anunciarlo a todos los pueblos. Ser cristiano no
es solamente tener una amistad íntima con Jesús. “¿Qué hacen
allí parados, mirando al cielo?”, les dijeron dos ángeles a los
discípulos tras la ascensión. Ser cristiano es también ser envia-
do.

Meditating on the Word
The mystery of the Ascension, beyond its literal meaning
(Jesus ascends into heaven and sits at the Father's right
hand), refers to the exaltation of the Son of God. Jesus has
been appointed Lord, participating in the power and author-
ity of God himself. St. Paul expresses in the second reading:
"Raising him from the dead and seating him at his right hand
in the heavens, far above every principality, authority, power
and dominion and every name that is named not only in this
age but also in the one to come." Also in the preface of the
Ascension we find the same idea: "Lord Jesus, the king of
glory, the conqueror of sin and death, ascended to heaven
while the angels sang his praises. Christ, the mediator be-
tween God and man, judge of the world and Lord of all, has
passed beyond our sight not to abandon us but to be our
hope. Christ is the beginning, the head of the Church;
where he has gone, we hope to follow.”
The ascension is also the beginning of the glorification of
humanity. For in Jesus Christ, true God and true man, has
been exalted human nature assumed by the Word of God.
Therefore the ascension shows us "what is the hope that
belongs to his call, what are the riches of glory in his inheri-
tance among the holy ones, and what is the surpassing
greatness of his power for us who believe.” (second read-
ing).
What does the ascension of Jesus invite us to do? The Gos-
pel of Matthew that we read today, tells us that Jesus, be-
fore ascending in to heaven, sends his disciples to evangelize
all peoples: "Go therefore, and make disciples of all nations,
baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and
of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have
commanded you. "
The mission is a key point of the Christian life. We are wit-
nesses of the Risen. Jesus asked of his disciples: "When the
Holy Spirit descends upon you, he will fill you with strength
and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, throughout Judea
and Samaria and to the ends of the earth." So we must pro-
claim to all peoples. Being Christian is not just having an
intimate friendship with Jesus. "What are you doing standing
there looking at heaven?" Two angels said to the disciples
after the ascension. Being a Christian is also to be sent on a
mission.

On June 11th and 12th Fr. Christopher Smith, repre-
senting the organization Concern America will speak
to us at all the Masses. Concern America is an inter-
national development and refugee aid organization
that works with the poor predominantly in Latin
America but also in Africa. Their chief thrust is to help
these people establish “self-help” programs.
There will be no special collection, but there will be
representatives outside the church to give you litera-
ture and further information. There will also be a do-
nation basket available. Your support will allow Con-
cern America to continue helping the poor in the
fields of health, education, food production and self-
help programs.

Periodically, and more so of late, we have had gypsies,
usually a mother with a small child, seeking money
from our parishioners after the weekend Masses.
While we have given them food from our Christian
Service Outreach (to which they are indifferent), what
they want are monetary donations. It is a ‘racket’ and
they prey on parishioner’s good will. They have been
circulating among parishes and other establishments
seeking money. We ask that you do not respond to
their solicitation for money so as not to encourage
their return. It is important to say that we are not
turning our backs to the poor; rather we do not wish
to condone or encourage their manipulative and
sometimes aggressive behavior which is a ‘racket’ for
collecting money.

Our Mission:
St. Edward Summer Camp is a two-week program
designed to improve and enrich skills in academic
areas. Extra curricular courses are also being offered
to provide opportunities for multiple intelligences.
Each class is limited to 15 students to
provide a small group tutoring
environment.

Academic Courses: Incoming K – 5th graders
Electives Courses: Specified age groups to provide
the most successful learning environment.

MD BASEBALL CAMP
Trinity League schools (Bosco, JSerra, Mater Dei, Or-
ange Lutheran, Santa Margarita and Servite) are joining
forces to hold a Baseball Camp on June 11 from 9 a.m.
to 1 p.m. at Mater Dei. The baseball camp is for players
ages 8 to 14 and is free of charge. Donations will be
accepted to support Cory Hahn the Mater Dei 2010
graduate and baseball standout who was severely in-
jured at the start of his freshman season at Arizona
