ITU achieved the status of ‘specialised agency’ of the
United Nations. As the Oldest member in this group.
ITU get involved in establishing a regulatory framework
that would integrate satellite communications in the existing system. The foundations for this integration were laid during the 1973 Conference of Malaga-Torremolinos, where the International Telecommunications Convention was signed on 25 October of that year, in later on replaced by the ITU Convention of Nairobi, which was signed in that city in 1982.
ITU aims and purposes are:
• To maintain and extend international cooperation for
the improvement and rational use of telecommunications of all kinds
• To promote the development of technical facillities
and their most efficient operation, with a view to improving the efficiency of telecommunications services, increasing their usefulness and making them, as far as possible, generally available to the public.
• To harmonise the actions of nations in the attainment
of these ends ITU memberships is open to all countries. In the present, there are 172 member States. ITU itself has four permanent organs:
