Restoring Leighton’s
Palace Of Art
A major nineteenth-century museum is to be given a twenty-first-century upgrade thanks to the
Kensington and Chelsea Council. Leighton House Museum, located on the edge of Holland Park,
is to undergo a £1.3 million programme of refurbishment and restoration. “Leighton House is
a fantastic museum but the building is in need of some care and attention. It’s a very popular
attraction visited by residents, budding artists and tourists. By restoring the services which
maintain the fabric of the building we will help secure its future for at least another century to
come. I very much look forward to seeing the changes and additions to the house when it reopens
in 2009”, said Cllr Nicholas Paget-Brown, Cabinet Member for Regeneration, Environmental
Management and Leisure.
The restoration works will include: a complete re-wire of the electrical services; upgrading of
the central heating system in order to create the right environmental conditions to preserve the
museum’s paintings and the restoration of the original sumptuous decoration. In July and August
2008, the most distinctive feature of the exterior of Leighton House will be reinstated. These are
the brick ziggurats that ran around the parapet wall of the Arab Hall and Silk Room until they were
removed in 1959. Their restoration will bring the exoticism of the Arab Hall onto the exterior of
the building. The completion of these projects will see the house returned closer to its original
spectacular appearance than at any time in living memory, re-creating Leighton’s ‘Private Palace
of Art.’ The museum will close on 31 October 2008 for 12 months.

Leighton House Museum is the former studio-house of the great Victorian artist Frederic, Lord Leighton (1830
to 1896). Located on the edge of London’s Holland Park, the house is one of the most extraordinary buildings
of the nineteenth century. New research and paint analysis carried out over recent years has confirmed that
Leighton’s original decorative schemes differed in several important respects from the current appearance of the
interiors. The floors in the dining room and drawing room were painted red and blue respectively. The dome of
the Arab Hall was gilded; the original floorboards on the first floor survive beneath modern flooring laid over
them in the 1960s and could be revealed and restored.
Completing these works will return the house to its original spectacular appearance, fully recreating Leighton’s
private ‘Palace of Art’. Detailed by Leighton’s architect George Aitchison and derived from the stepped pyramid
shape of temples found in ancient Mesopotamia, the ziggurats remained in situ until 1959 when they were
taken down and the parapet altered. Following a grant from Kensington and Chelsea Environmental Ltd., the
bricks are being specially made to order and plans for the re-introduction of the ziggurats are well advanced.

of air conditioning could be created through the sliding glass walls, and we
took a number of considerations to reduce the building’s overall impact on the
environment.
“Solar panels were installed on the flat roof to heat the pool and much of the

is conventional in style but the method of heating both the building
itself and the water for pupils, staff and kitchens is anything but. With
an eye to the future – in terms of both energy costs and environmental
considerations – the education authority opted for a system utilising the
heat always present at a more or less constant temperature in the ‘near-
surface geothermal layer’ underground.
In a system designed by NIBE Energy Systems Ltd. of Chesterfield, eleven
boreholes 100 metres deep were drilled into the school grounds before
landscaping. Each borehole contains a plastic tube in an elongated u-
shape, within which circulates a glycol/water mixture in a closed circuit,
working in rather the same manner as a car’s cooling system. Energy
from the warm ground is absorbed in the mixture and translated to two
inter-connected NIBE Fighter 1330 Heat Pumps situated in the school’s
boiler/utilities room. These, with a capacity of 30kW, convert the latent
energy into heat for the water in a fully insulated tank situated near the
Fighter units. This in turn feeds the entire under-floor central heating
system and the hot water supply for all the school buildings. Back-up
heating, if required to act as a boost in times of maximum peak usage, is
supplied by a gas boiler.
While the design and installation of the school’s geothermal heating
was undertaken by NIBE Energy Systems in UK, the equipment used was
designed and manufactured by parent company NIBE AB in Sweden, a
country where renewable energy systems of many types have been in
general use for decades.
