In 2011, it will be 750 years since the Håkon’s Hall was inaugurated: King Håkon
Håkonsson held a great banquet here in September 1261, when his son Magnus married
a Danish princess and was crowned co-regent with King Håkon. During the Middle Ages,
the hall was the biggest and grandest building in the royal residency near Bryggen in
Bergen. Today, it has been restored and is also used for hospitality purposes on formal
occasions, such as royal visits to Bergen. A number of evening concerts will be held in
the hall in its anniversary year. The Håkon’s Hall is also an exciting museum. It is open
to the public except during special events.

together, we are creating
a dynamic growth region
The Bergen region has a central location on the west coast of Norway,
with industry that reflects its proximity to the sea. We have strong clusters
in fisheries and aquaculture as well as in oil, gas and renewable energy.
The region also has a long-standing tradition for shipping, and Bergen is
one of the biggest maritime cities in Scandinavia. It is also an established
financial centre. The region has a very exciting cultural scene and a growing
number of enterprises in the creative industries. The experiences and
tourist attractions it offers draw many people to the region.
Strong expertise
The Bergen region is characterised by knowledge, development ambition
and cooperation and it is one of the leading expertise regions in Norway,
with a strong, wide-ranging research and development community.
The region has major educational institutions and leading expertise clusters
in Norway’s most important industries, and this helps to stimulate further
growth. Together, we shall promote what the region has to offer.
On the following pages, you can learn about what the region has to offer
and find out more about what we do.
’The development of offshore wind farms in Europe is well under way, particularly in
the UK and Germany. Technology suppliers from Western Norway have wide-ranging
expertise as a result of years of experience from the maritime and offshore industry
along the coast of Western Norway. This expertise is now helping us to develop and
build offshore wind farms in Europe,’ says Asle Lygre, General Manager of Arena NOW.
The Baufeld area on the German coast is one of the projects in which suppliers
from Western Norway have played an important role.

’The system is called SynchroPort and it has been developed to optimise ships’
sailing schedules and the utilisation of port capacity. When a ship leaves the port of
loading, the port of discharge will give the ship a recommended speed and arrival
time, so that it can adapt its speed on this basis. The port will also receive a modern
graphic tool which it can use to plan port resources. Today, seven per cent of the
world’s shipping fleet waits unnecessarily in queues to discharge their loads. If we
can make this system work, fuel consumption could at best be halved, shipping
companies would save money and emissions to the environment would be reduced,’
explains Morten Graff, Vice President Sourcing and Business Development at
Grieg Logistics and the Grieg Group’s project manager for the initiative,
which has received funding from the Research Council of Norway.
He is fully aware that, in order for the system to work, several shipping and port
operation systems must be changed. But he nonetheless hopes that some
industrial ports can start using the whole system or parts of it in 2011.
Could this ship benefit from a more efficient port planning system in future?

Creative industries
The Bergen region has Norway’s second biggest cluster in design, film,
and TV production and it also has many interesting digital environments.
In addition, music has always been a major export from the region.
Artists welcome
Bergen aims to be one of the foremost arenas for innovation, fresh
thinking, openness and creativity. The artist exchange programme
is one initiative in this context.
‘Bergen til Verden’ (Bergen to the World) and ‘Verden til Bergen’ (the World to Bergen)
is the motto of the City of Bergen’s investment programme in the arts scene. Giving
artists from abroad an opportunity to come here and giving Bergen-based artists
an opportunity to travel abroad provides inspiration for artistic development.
’We have had an Artist in Residence programme at USF Verftet since 1999, and
around100 artists have stayed here, each of them for around three months,’
says Line Nord who manages the programme.
In 2010, the Swedish poet, author and photographer Kristina Sigunsdotter stayed in
Bergen as an artist in residence, and she had the benefit of free accommodation,
a studio and great opportunities for working and exchanging experience with local
artists. These popular programmes help to put the city and the region on the map.
