In the name of Allah the most Merciful, the most Compassionate

The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: “It is not permissible for any Muslim
who something to will to stay for two nights without having his last will and testament written and kept
ready with him.” (Reported by al-Bukhari and Muslim).

This is the will of the humble slave of Allah/ …

1) I bear witness that there is no God worthy of worship except Allah and that Mohammad (peace
and blessings of Allah be upon him) is his slave and messenger and that judgment day is
approaching without doubt and that Allah resurrects the dead.
2) I call those of my family that I left behind to fear Allah, to resolve their disputes and to obey Allah
and His Messenger if they were in fact amongst the believers. I also enjoin you with what the
Prophets Abraham and Jacob enjoined their sons, “And the same did Ibrahim enjoin on his sons
and (so did) Jacob. O my sons! Surely Allah has chosen for you (this) faith, therefore die not
unless you are Muslims.” (Holy Qur’aan, 2:132).
3) I also enjoin them to have trust in Allah and to remind me of that, if possible, when I am dying as
Jabir al-Ansari – may Allah be pleased with him – narrated that he heard the messenger of Allah
peace be upon him say three days before his death, “One should strive to have trust in Allah
when death comes upon him” (Reported by Muslim).
4) I also enjoin those who are present in my last moments to remind me gently to utter the
testimony (Shahadah) as the Prophet peace be upon him said, “If a person’s last words were La
Ilaha Illa Allah (there is no God worthy of worship but Allah), he will enter paradise” (Reported by
Abu Dawud and authenticated by Al Albani).
5) I enjoin you to be patient, accepting of the what Allah the almighty has preordained, and to pray
that Allah grants me a good and pious ending to my life as Umm Salamah narrated that the
Prophet peace be upon him said, “When you visit a sick person, say good things, for the angels
say Ameen to whatever you say.” Umm Salamah then said, “When Abu Salamah died, I came to
the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) and said: “Abu Salamah has
died.” He said: “Say: O Allah, forgive me and him, and compensate me well.” She said: I said:
And Allah compensated me with one who was better for me than him: Muhammad (peace and
blessings of Allah be upon him).” (Reported by Muslim).
6) When my soul leaves my body, close my eyes and ask Allah to grant me forgiveness. When this
happens, I command that you do not wail for me, strike your cheeks, tear your garments and
commit actions of ignorance as the Prophet peace be upon him said, “He is not one of us who
strikes his cheeks, rends his garments and calls with the call of the jaahiliyyah.” (Reported by Al-
Bukhari and Muslim).
7) I also instruct that I get washed by those who are knowledgeable in the Sunnah of washing the
dead and are pious and faithful. I enjoin those who wash me to guard my privacy and to not tell
to anyone if he sees something undesirable in me and to do this deed for the sake of Allah as
the Prophet peace be upon him said: “He who washes a dead person and guards his privacy will
be guarded from his sins, and he who shrouds a dead person will be dressed in silk by Allah.”
(Reported by Al-Tabarani in al-Kabeer and its line of transmission is authentic).
8) I also enjoin me to shroud me in white shrouds and to beautify its smell with scents as the
Prophet peace be upon him said, “Wear white clothes, for they are the best of your clothes, and
shroud your dead in them.” (Reported by Al-Tirmidhi and authenticated by Al-Albani).
9) I enjoin you to carry my body to the area in which you will pray for me, then follow my body to my
place of burial, as this is one of my rights; the Prophet peace be upon him said, “a Muslim has
five rights over other Muslims …” and upon them is following his or her funeral to the place of

burial (Reported by Al-Bukhari and Muslim). The Prophet peace be upon him also said,
“Whoever attends the funeral until the prayer has been offered will have one qiraat (of reward)
and whoever attends until the deceased has been buried will have two qiraats.” It was said,
“What are the two qiraats?” He said: “Like two great mountains” (Reported by Al-Bukhari and
Muslim).
10) I enjoin you to strive to seek the largest number of pious monotheist people possible to pray for
me in my funeral in hope that their supplication will serve as an intercession for me with the
permission of Allah the Almighty, as the Prophet peace be upon him said, “There is no Muslim
man who dies and forty men who do not associate anything with Allah pray the funeral prayer for
him, but Allah will accept their intercession for him” (reported by Muslim).
11) I also ask that no woman follow me to my place of burial, as Umm Atiyah – may Allah be
pleased with her – said, “we (women) were prohibited from following funerals” (reported by Al-
Bukhari). However, if she insists and refuses to honour my request, then make sure she does so
without wailing, screaming and with wearing the proper Islamic attire for women.
12) I enjoin me to bury me in the country I die in, as it is repugnant to transport a Muslim body from
country to country for the burial.
13) I enjoin you to make up the days I was not able to perform my obligatory fasts in, as the Prophet
peace be upon him said, “Whoever dies owing fasts, his heir should fast on his behalf” (reported
by Al-Bukhari and Muslim).
14) I enjoin my children especially to perform many good deeds as this will benefit me if Allah wills,
as the Prophet peace be upon him said, “When a man dies, all his deeds come to a halt apart
from three: ongoing charity, beneficial knowledge or a righteous child who will pray for him”
(Reported by Muslim).
15) I enjoin you not to gather for my funeral in a specialized place, to not prepare food for anybody
(as food should be prepared for you), and to not recruit a special Qur’aan “Qari” to recite
Qur’aan at my funeral, or on any day afterwards. I also forbid you to commit any other
innovations that have no basis in Islam.
16) I enjoin me to repay my debts from my assets before burying me, as the Prophet peace be upon
said, “The soul of the believer is suspended because of his debt until it is paid off” (Reported Al-
Tirmidhi and authenticated by Al-Albani). If I had no assets or wealth at my time of death, I would
hope that my relatives or other wealthy people would charitably repay my debts due to the
importance of this matter; the Prophet peace be upon him said, “All the martyr’s sins will be
forgiven except his debts” (reported by Muslim). I also ask everyone who I have treated badly in
any way to forgive me, in hope that Allah will forgive them and me. I also ask them to remember
that the Prophet peace be upon him said, “Those who are merciful will be shown mercy by the
Most Merciful. Have mercy on those who are on earth, and the One Who is in heaven will show
mercy to you” (reported by Al-Tirmidhi and authenticated by Al-Albani).

Finally, this is what I accept for my religion and earthly matters. As Allah is my witness, I
denounce any action or saying that goes against the Qur’aan and authentic Sunnah. And whosoever
negligently falls short and honouring this will, changes anything in it, or goes against Islam in anything
mentioned or unmentioned bares the sins of his actions as Allah the Almighty said, “Whoever then
alters it after he has heard it, the sin of it then is only upon those who alter it; surely Allah is Hearing,
Knowing” (2:181).
