T he youth of America have an obesity problem, and the youth of the military do too. A 2005 Health Behaviors
Study found that 2 out of 3 non-active duty beneficiaries are overweight, 1 out of 3 is obese, and 18.9% of DOD
dependents are obese. According to a 2008 survey conducted by the Center for Health Promotion and Preventative
Medicine-Europe, at DOD Dependents Schools the percentage of children with weight issues doubled within four years.
Overweight children are highly likely to develop into overweight adults, and experience increased risk for the associ-
ated health problems. Health concerns include heart disease, high blood pressure, diabetes, and high cholesterol, just
to name a few.

obesity with the “Fit is Fun” program. This summer pro-
gram for overweight youth will focus on healthy lifestyle
choices, and fun physical activity in a non-competitive at-
mosphere. The goal of this program is to give youth and
families the tools necessary to make good decisions, for
the rest of their lives. This is not a weight loss program,
and this is not just an exercise class. “Fit is Fun” is an in-
vestment in a healthy future. Physical activity will be a
part of every session, and while the activities will be non-
competitive and all-inclusive, they will be physically chal-
lenging. Learning about nutrition, the human body, self-
esteem, and weight control techniques will also be a vital
part of “Fit is Fun.”
