Virtual VIRTUAL_PARTICIPATION@UNFCCC, 6–8 June. Foyer, Hotel Maritim

participation
All participants of the Bonn SBs are invited to a special 3 day exhibit that seeks to
showcase how participation in the sessions and activities of the UNFCCC process may
be enhanced through information and communications technology solutions (ICTs).
The exhibit located in the Foyer of the Hotel Maritim provides participants with the
latest information on a range of products produced by leading ICT companies that can
be considered at national and international levels. Some of these technologies are
already being used by some Parties, observers and the secretariat to connect remotely
through telephone and video conference calls, while other technology offers additional
features that may be considered in the future. The applicability and use of such
technologies in developing countries is addressed in this exhibit.
The VIRTUAL_PARTICIPATION@UNFCCC exhibit has been arranged by the
secretariat with the kind support of the observer organization TechAmerica Europe.
TechAmerica Europe seeks to show how ICTs can support action on climate change
by providing technology for enabling mitigation and adaptation-related activities, as
well as collaboration and knowledge sharing. It contributed to the Danish/secretariat
ICT@COP15 exhibit in 2009.

Important information on the E. coli outbreak

In reference to the E. coli outbreak in Germany, the United Nations Department of Safety and Security (UNDSS)
security detachment has been in contact with the Maltesers medical personnel (first aid support staff for the
conference) as part of the arrangements for the session. In this respect, the UNDSS would like to share some
important information relating to the symptoms and the suspected mode of transmission and give some
suggestions on reducing the chances of infection.

Information:
According to the Chief of the Maltesers detachment for the conference, all the emergency medical personnel have
received specific instructions issued by the Chief Medical Doctor in Bonn on how to deal with possible E. coli
infection. These instructions explain the symptoms and the procedures to be followed if a suspected case occurs,
how the bacteria is believed to be transmitted and what can be done to prevent infection.

Transmission:
The bacteria is suspected to be transmitted by person-to-person contact and is not airborne. The source of the
bacteria has not yet been found, but the intensive search is continuing.

Symptoms:
The symptoms of the infection include regular flu-like symptoms (headache and fever), as well as more severe
symptoms, which include vomiting with blood and diarrhoea with blood in it.

Procedures to follow if taken ill:

If the symptoms present themselves at the conference site, please contact the first aid staff (Maltesers), who will
carry out a quick check. If necessary, the Maltesers will transport the person to the hospital for further
confirmation and treatment. If the symptoms occur outside the conference site, the Maltesers recommend that you
proceed to a local hospital for testing and further confirmation as soon as possible.

Precautionary measures:
To minimize the chance of infection, the following are recommended by medical personnel:

Clean your hands as frequently as possible, especially persons in frequent contact with other people;

Cook all meat and fish all the way through, and wash all fruit and vegetables thoroughly;

Avoid eating lettuce, tomatoes and cucumbers. Should you decide to eat these items please ensure that
they are thoroughly washed.

Antibacterial gel will be available in all areas and distributed to staff offices. Public toilets will be cleaned
regularly, and information notices will be displayed on how to wash hands properly.

UNDSS, through the Maltesers, will keep you informed of any changes to, or new, information. Should you need
any more information, please feel free to contact UNDSS security or the Maltesers staff at the Maritim Hotel.
