Warhammer 40,000 Tournament

Queen’s University Belfast | Students’ Union

24-26 June 2011 | www.q-con.org.uk

1.0 Tournament Overview

Date: 25th and 26th June, 2011

Location: Cloisters/Relish, Ground Floor, Queens University Students Union

Format: 5 Games, 1500 Point Armies

2.0 General Rules

The tournament will use the 5th edition of the Warhammer 40,000 rules without any add-ons.

Imperial Armour, Forgeworld or Apocalypse rules are not allowed, though Forgeworld models may
be used to represent normal models.

The most up to date English version of army books and rulebook takes priority over other
versions.

Each player must bring all codices and rules they're using, army roster, dice, measuring tape and
templates.

The latest version of the GW FAQs will be used. If you have any rules queries you would like
clarified in advance, send your question to 40Ktournament@q-con.org.uk.

4.0 Tournament Points

Each player will receive a score from 0 – 120 Tournament Points as follows:

Gaming: 0 – 100 TPs

Army Appearance: 0 – 15 TPs

Army List: 0 – 5 TPs

4.1 Gaming
Pairings

There will be 5 rounds of gaming. The Goettinger Pairing Program (GoePP) will be used to
determine the pairings for each round as follows:

R1: Players and tables will be randomly drawn (where possible, players from the same club
will not face each other in this round)
R2 – R4: Pairings will be determined based on the players’ current total gaming score,
with the exception that you will not have to play against someone you have played against
in a previous round.
R5: As with R2 - R4, except you may have to face someone you have already played
against.

2
In the case that there are an odd number of players, a bye buster player will be added to
even the numbers. They will count as a normal player in all regards.

Missions

For each round, the referee will randomly determine a mission and deployment from the
rulebook, to be used by all the players for that round. Each mission and deployment will be
used twice, and the same combination will not be repeated.

Gaming points

Step 1:- decide who is the winner based on rulebook rules. The winner will score 15
points, the loser 5 points, and in the case of a draw, each player will score 10 points.
Wiping out the enemy will result in a score of 15 – 5, regardless of other victory conditions.
If both armies are simultaneously wiped out, the score will be 10 – 10.

Step 2:- Calculate Victory Points (VP) scored, as shown in the rulebook. The player having
the VP difference in his favor gets a bonus, the other player gets a malus as shown:

VP Difference Bonus Malus

0 to 249 +0 -0
250 to 499 +1 -1
500 to 749 +2 -2
750 to 999 +3 -3
1000 to 1249 +4 -4
1250 or more +5 -5

The bonus or malus will be added to your score from step 1 to give your Gaming Points
(GPs) score for that round.

If you concede the game, you will score 0 GPs and 0 VPs, your opponent will score 20GPs
and 1500 VPs.

4.2 Army Appearance

Ideally, every model in your army should be fully painted, based, and WYSIWYG (what you see is
what you get), however, players may use models that are not so.

Players will score Army Appearance points as follows:

 A - Every model in your army is fully painted, you will score 5 TPs, otherwise 0 TPs.
 B - If every model has a painted and textured base, you will score 5 TPs, otherwise 0 TPs.
 C - If every model in your army is WYSIWYG, you will score 5 TPs, otherwise 0 TPs.

Add your score from A, B, C to get an Army Appearance score between 0 and 15.

The minimum standard for fully painted will generally be that the whole model is base coated, in
at least 3 colours, in a ‘sensible’ colour scheme (randomly splashing 3 colours on the model isn’t
enough).

 Clear plastic flying stands do not have to be painted or based.

3
 Models should be based on the correct sized base.

For reference:

25mm: Infantry and jump infantry

40mm: Beasts and cavalry, bikes and jetbikes, swarms, Terminators, Obliterators, Mega-
armour, exo-armour. Jetbikes must be based 20mm high at minimum. Bikes, beasts and
cavalry can also use the new "bike bases" with round edges

60mm: Monstrous Creatures, artillery or heavy weapons teams, walkers, skimmers, trikes.
Skimmers must be based 30mm high at minimum.

Large oval base: (Valkyrie base): Valkyrie, Vendetta, Stormraven, Tervigon, Trygon,
Mawloc, Tyrannofex.

Independent characters must be based on the type of base from the corresponding unit
reference
base.

 Non-GW, heavily converted and scratch built models are welcome, but they should be
easily identifiable. Modelling for advantage is not allowed. If your version of an existing GW
model is of a different size to the original, then consider it to be the standard size for line of
sight purposes etc.

 Forgeworld models may be used to represent other models.

The judge's decision is final

9.0 In Game Issues
9.1 Time

There should be enough time to finish all your games. However, if you do not get your game
finished in time, then it is imperative that both players get to play the same number of turns. This
will be done either by continuing the game into the break, or rolling back the game to the
previous turn. A timer will show how much time is left in the round, and warnings will be given as
the round nears completion. Players will not be allowed to deliberately stall the game. If you feel
that your opponent is doing this then bring it to the attention of a referee, who will take
appropriate action.

9.2 Rules Queries

If you encounter a situation that you cannot resolve amicably using the rulebook, codices and
FAQs, then bring it to the attention of a referee. If no answer exists, they will give a ruling based
on common sense, or widely used tournament clarifications (e.g. the ETC clarifications). If there is
still no solution then they will ‘d6’ it. If you have any issues that you’d like to get cleared up in
advance then send them to 40Ktournament@q-con.org.uk.

9.3 Difficult Opponent

Most gamers play in a friendly, fair and sporting manner, but occasionally you encounter one who
seems more concerned with being awkward than with playing the game. If you are unfortunate
enough to encounter such an individual, then please bring it to the referee’s attention ASAP. They
will take appropriate action to ensure that the game is played properly.

The judge's decision is final

be booked using the online Q-Con registration system along with your ticket.
